Secretary Bennett’s Statement on Sales Tax Initiative Ruling: “We’re satisfied to have a decision from the Supreme Court that the plaintiff’s mistaken submittal of two versions of the initiative was not a fatal error, and they substantially complied with statute.  Our office was never trying to keep the measure on or off the ballot; rather it was about being certain that state law was sufficiently followed.  The error had never occurred in Arizona before and it was important to seek a judicial resolution at the state’s highest court. It’s noteworthy that the Supreme Court held that the filing merely met with the substantial compliance standard which is very different from the trial court’s ruling that the measure was in full compliance with the Arizona Constitution. “ Interview:
Arizona State Treasurer Doug Ducey Has Filed Papers with the Secretary of State’s office to create the “No New Taxes, No On Prop 204”  committee to oppose the misleading promises made by the Quality in Education and Jobs Initiativem Ducey announced.
“Prop 204 is genuinely bad policy.  It makes a permanent, billion-dollar-a-year spending commitment; it provides for no oversight as to how the money is spent; and it makes no reforms that actually improve accountability or the quality of education.  Prop 204 amounts to just throwing money at a problem and hoping that somehow, magically, things will just get better. It is the exact type of government spending that put Arizona’s budget in turmoil just a few years ago. We have to learn from the mistakes in our past, and we would be foolish to repeat them so quickly after our last experience.

The Goldwater Institute Has Released The Results Of It’s 2012 Legislative Report Card. The Institute’s Legislative Report Card provides the most comprehensive analysis of Arizona lawmakers’ commitment to freedom-enhancing legislation. This year’s Report Card analyzed 517 third read votes by state legislators. Among the most interesting findings is that Democrats are increasingly supportive of innovative education reforms, with over one-third of the Democratic delegation earning an A- in that category. Bipartisan support in legislation expanded Arizona’s education savings accounts to an estimated 20 percent of Arizona school children.

AZGOP Statement: Obama Recruited Richard Carmona As Part Of Democrats’ Election-Year Ploy To Sway Latinos  PHOENIX – As federal immigration authorities in Arizona begin today to implement the Obama Administration’s new “deferred action” immigration plan, Arizonans should be reminded that in addition to suing Arizona for enforcing immigration laws, the Obama Administration also previously injected itself into Arizona’s political landscape when Barack Obama personally called Richard Carmona to urge him to run for office and become one of Arizona’s U.S. Senators.  Arizona Republican Party Chairman Tom Morrissey yesterday called Obama’s plan to sway Latino voters a “sad campaign ploy.” In June, Obama announced a new policy to allow young illegal immigrants that meet certain criteria to apply for temporary “deferred action” or an exemption from deportation from the federal government.
“Congress already rejected this half-hearted immigration reform, so President Obama did an end-run around Congress to buy time to get more Democrats like Richard Carmona elected,” said Tim Sifert, spokesman for the Arizona Republican Party.  “Obama and his Democrats have a record on immigration that is as bad as their record on jobs and the economy, and simply putting another Democrat like Richard Carmona in the mix is not the solution.”
BACKGROUND:  Obama & Democrat Leader Reid Personally Recruited Richard Carmona  - “On September 23, President Obama called Richard Carmona to encourage him to run,” said one Democratic strategist.  (Alexander Burns, Obama courts Ariz. Senate candidate, may contest state 'heavily', Politico, 10/06/11)
Carmona is one of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee's favorite candidates and was personally courted by President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to get into the race.  (David Catanese, Bivens clears the way for Carmona, Politico, 3/27/2012)
Obama personally called Carmona and asked him to run, and Carmona told The Hill in February that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (Wash.) were also among those who reached out to court him. (Josh Lederman, Democrat Bivens drops out of Arizona Senate primary, clearing way for Carmona, The Hill, 3/27/2010)
