Early this week a blog reported, “Several reliable sources tell PM that the Arizona Republican Party is considering bringing back Phil Mason to run in the 2013 January Election for State Chairman!”
This morning Briefs e-mailed Mason and asked him to confirm or deny the report.  Here is Mason’s response: “You have informed me that a blog has announced that I am considering running for the Arizona State Party Chairman, and you asked for my response. The above referenced blog is a site that I do not choose to read because of its inherent pattern of false and misleading "news" items that are usually filled with personal attacks and seamy caricatures of our most patriotic and conservative leaders.  I also will never even use the name of the blog since I choose to not increase its visibility or readership by those who are curious.
“It is only due to the high regard that I have for you that I even respond to this report.  As I told former Senator Allen a few years ago, I am loved by some, I am respected by others and I am either hated or despised by many, but I know of no one who thinks I am stupid.  After working at the Legislature for a decade and working for the Party for a couple of years, it is refreshing and liberating to say and do what I will without the self-imposed restrictions that this  position would require me to implement.  It would now be stupid of me to tie my hands, my words and my actions again because of the responsibility that would come with taking on this task.
"Of course, that may be somewhat an exercise in exercise as I have made no inquiries to even determine if such a campaign would be supported.   I have supported individuals like Rob Haney, Lyle Tuttle, Pat Oldroyd, Tom Husband in the past and I fully support AJ LaFaro for the MCRC Chairman position in January.  I make that support public only because of the preemptive and untimely announcement of one candidate and her slate earlier this week.  It is unfortunate that they chose this critical time to distract from the focus of electing conservative Republicans.
" The field for Chairman of the State Party has not solidified at this time, but, again, in a timing that is hardly coincidental with the county announcement, I believe that personal agendas have replaced what should be a commitment to our main responsibility.
"This is the most critical election in at least the last 150 years for our nation and I believe that all hands should be on deck and working for Mitt Romney to defeat the current resident of the White House.  We also need to do the hard work to ensure that conservative candidates prevail at all levels of our government.  Those important offices include our water and fire boards, our school boards, our municipal and county offices as well as the legislature.
"I close with a quote of William Tecumseh Sherman, "If nominated, I will not accept; if drafted, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve."   Case Closed    -  Phil Mason
