·        Break Ground For WWII Memorial:  Seventy-one years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Secretary of State Ken Bennett and a special group of Arizonans have broken ground to build a unique WWII Memorial at the state capitol in Phoenix.
Following a remembrance ceremony in Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza, Bennett and the Salute the Fallen Committee formally broke ground for construction of a WWII Memorial which will include historic gun barrels from the USS Arizona and USS Missouri.  The barrels will be displayed as a part of a complete WWII exhibit representing the beginning and end of the war.
“Today we celebrate an important day along our journey to build a WWII Memorial here at our state capitol,” said Bennett.  “Since we received the barrels back in April, we’ve been busy developing plans, fundraising and restoring the barrels.  We really look forward to the next 12 months as our partners begin to bring the project to life.  It’s our hope that a year from now, we’ll be back here dedicating this tribute to those who died in the war and to those who returned to build Arizona into the place we call home.”
Bennett also unveiled a preliminary list of Arizona’s WWII service men and women who sacrificed their lives during the war.  The names of those who died will be displayed on a steel structure between the barrels from the USS Arizona and USS Missouri.  View list www.GunsToSaluteTheFallen.com.  Over the coming months, a special committee within the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission will process names of those who were not among the list provided by the Department of Defense, branches of the Military and the Arizona Republic.
