·        Congressman Trent Franks Foreign Policy Legislative Assistant Stephanie Hammond has worked closely with the the legal team of Pastor Saeed Abedini, a dual US-Iranian citizens imprisoned in the notoriously brutal Evin Prison for his Christian activities in Iran. Franks released this statement yesterday: "As our president is inaugurated today and Americans remember the many freedoms they enjoy as citizens of this great country, one American citizen will be forced to stand trial in Iran and could even face the death penalty under the Iranian judicial system. Last Friday, the National Security Council released a statement that called on Iran to immediately release U.S. citizen Saeed Abedini. To this day, however, State Department still refuses to issue any kind of statement on this U.S. citizen's behalf. If our own State Department fails to advocate for a U.S. citizen who faces injustice in a country that is widely regarded as one of the most egregious human rights abusers, then I believe they have failed in one of their most fundamental responsibilities to American citizens."

·        AZGOP Chr Tom Morrissey Congratulates Tony Rivero Upon Election as Vice Mayor of City of Peoria  - On January 8, 2013 the Peoria City Council unanimously elected Tony Rivero as the city's new vice-mayor.  Rivero was first elected in 2010 to a four-year term on the council by residents of the Acacia District in Peoria. "Councilman Rivero's been recognized as an extraordinary young leader not just by the people of his community but by his peers on the Peoria City Council, who have quickly recognized his talents and leadership skills," said Morrissey.  "As a fellow Republican leader, it is my pleasure to congratulate Vice-Mayor Rivero and point out that he's a true public servant and that I'm very proud to know him. "Rivero first took office in January of 2011 and represents the Acacia District from approximately 71st to 85th Avenues and Cholla Street to Northern Avenue.  He is a fiscal conservative and has fought against wasteful government spending.  He is currently working to institute reforms that will make Peoria more conducive to business by making the permitting process more efficient.
·        The JLBC Staff Reports Monthly To The Legislature on the status of General Fund revenue collections and other fiscal issues.  This report can be found on the following link:  Among the key points of the document:
1.    December General Fund revenue collections totaled $883.2 million.  Base revenues were 2.0% above the prior year.
2.    Individual Income Withholding showed a large gain due mostly to technical corrections.  In contrast, Corporate Income Tax refunds were significantly larger than the prior year; and corporate receipts were down.
3.    Overall December sales tax collections, which reflect November sales, increased by 5.1% compared to the prior year. The bulk of holiday sales will be reflected in January collections, which should provide further information on revenue performance during this significant period of tax collections.
4.    Total December General Fund collections were $13.2 million above the enacted May budget forecast. Year-to-date, revenues are 3.6% higher than last year and are $32.3 million above the budget forecast.
5.    The state has $451.8 million in Budget Stabilization Fund reserves, which represents an original $450 million deposited as part of the FY 2013 budget plus $1.8 million of interest earned. - Submitted by Senator John McComish, Rep Bob Robson and Rep Jeff Dial
