2-13-13 MCRC Briefs

Feb 13, 2013

·        Message From MCRC Chairman A.J. LaFaro: 3 Bills For You To Take Action On - I want to make you aware of 3 bills that I am concerned about.   Your involvement can make a big difference.  There is a great website called that will allow you to email all of the legislators of the House and let them know how you feel.
ü  HB2060 - Censure Bill   This bill will allow school board members to censure each other.  This could be a tool used to ruin the reputation of a conservative or a liberal school board member.  School board members should feel free to speak their mind and their concerns whether or not they are in the minority of the board.  Please email the legislature and tell them to vote NO on HB2060.  It will be voted on in the house tomorrow 2/14/13 at 1:30pm.
ü  HB2343 - Public Employees, Compensation For Union Activity    This bill prohibits taxpayer dollars to be used for union activity.  If you believe union dues and not taxpayer dollars should fund union activities then please email the legislature and tell them to vote YES on HB2343.  It will be heard in committee on 2/19/13.
ü  HB2456 - Revenue allocation districts   This bill passed out of committee and will soon go to the House floor for a vote.  This would allow town councils to draw boundaries around businesses and form a board that will tax the busineesses.  The revenue from the businesses will be used by the board for "economic development".  This bill is a dream come true for big business and the well connected to create taxing districts and then control the funds.  If you don't believe in business taxing districts then please email the legislature and tell them to vote NO on HB2456.
Small businesses and individuals have little to no voice at the Capitol.  They can't afford to hire a lobbyist to protect their interest.  We need your help.  Please pick the issues above that you feel are important and use to email every Republican legislator in the house to tell them how you feel.  It will be Republicans that decide if these bills pass or not.  Please do not attack any of the legislators sponsoring the bills but focus on the bill itself.
·        Governor To Celebrate Statehood Day Tomorrow At The Arizona Capitol - Two Events Mark Arizona’s 101st Birthday:  Governor Jan Brewer will unveil a bronze statue of Arizona miner George Warren, who is immortalized on the Arizona State Seal, at 9:30 am, Feb. 14 at the State Capitol. The gift, which will be presented by Arizona native Jim Warne, Jr. in honor of Statehood day, pays tribute to the significance of mining throughout Arizona history. In honor of Arizona’s Centennial, Jim Warne, Jr., commissioned a special bronze statue to honor the impact of mining upon our state’s development. Arizona artist Don Cox worked for more than two years on this statue, which will be displayed at the Arizona State Capitol.
·        Governor Jan Brewer Will Flip A Switch Permanently Lighting The Capitol’s Copper Dome and Winged Victory at 6:15 pm, Feb 14 on the State Capitol lawn, 1700 W. Washington St., Phx.  The lighting will be followed by a brief fireworks display.
·        Pinal County’s Tim Kanavel Compares The Class Of 1957 Vs. Class Of 2012: “I graduated from "Hillbilly" High School in eastern Ohio in 1974 and we used to have turkey shoots during school time on Friday afternoons in the Fall. I can't imagine just how traumatized everyone at school was and all the years of therapy we put them through.   Especially since everyone at school came out to watch the students challenge the teachers in target shooting - girls, boys and teachers all brought guns to school. I suppose today we would all be in prison - or worse.  I graduated from Tri Valley High School in Dresden, Ohio in 1974.  Also, everyone always had a penknife on them or one of the long hunting knives that had a sheath that hung from a belt. I really don't think anyone thought anything of it.”
·        Congressman David Schweikert:  By Hollywood standards, Obama’s State of the Union speech was a masterful performance filled with poetic language and applause lines. But for hardworking American taxpayers, it was an aggressive attack on our freedom, our pocketbooks and our country’s future. Obama claimed to reject “bigger government,” but his speech was chock full of promises to spend more, regulate more, and expand government’s intrusive presence in our lives. If that’s not “bigger government,” I don’t know what is.And as I listened to the president’s speech, I took comfort in this simple truth: We Can, And We Will, Fight Back.

·        A Call To All Pastors

·        A Time For Choosing - A Time For Action   It for this reason alone, that the Founders placed the II Amendment in the Bill of Rights – “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Only a State with a fully armed citizenry could protect the Rights of the people, under the X Amendment...  JBWilliams

·        The Commander In Chief Was AWOL During Benghazi Attack  According to Gen. Vallely, who is a frequent Fox News Channel military analyst and reports regularly for television and radio stations across the nation, the cover up "appears to be a White House order to 'Stand Down' and not issue a rescue mission operational order. For over seven hours Obama did nothing.".....Commander AWOL
·        Conservatism Killing The GOP?  By L. Brent Bozell III   As usual, our media, like President Obama, see an inevitably socialist America in our future. To accomplish this, they must first crush the conservative movement. Game on. It's not helping the GOP that some of its conservative leaders are acting thoroughly intimidated.
·        GOP's Rubio Rips Obama, Says His Plans Will Hurt Middle Class  Claiming Barack Obama thinks a "free enterprise economy" is "the cause of our problems" -- not, as he sees it, the solution -- Sen. Marco Rubio argued Tuesday that the president's proposals would hurt middle class citizens more than help them.     rubio-sotu-response
·        In Tea Party Response, Paul Urges GOP To Embrace Immigrants, cut spending
Sen. Rand Paul called on his fellow Republicans to be more welcoming of immigrants Tuesday night in a speech where he also sharply criticized President Barack Obama and his congressional colleagues for failing to reduce the nation's debt.
·        “Right From The Start, The 41-Year-Old Cuban-American stated bluntly that he was no senator’s (or governor’s) son. ‘I didn’t inherit any money from them,’ Rubio said of his parents. ‘But I inherited something far better — the real opportunity to accomplish my dreams. … Mr. President, I still live in the same working-class neighborhood I grew up in ... My neighbors aren’t millionaires. They’re retirees who depend on Social Security and Medicare. They’re workers who have to get up early tomorrow morning and go to work to pay the bills. They’re immigrants, who came here because they were stuck in poverty in countries where the government dominated the economy.’”
·        Rubio’s Water Break: The Gulp Heard ‘Round The World – Joel Siegel writes for the New York Daily News: “Thirsty for attention? Or just thirsty? … It was supposed to be the moment that propelled Rubio into the top tier of potential presidential candidates. Instead, social media exploded with jokes after Rubio awkwardly paused, reached for a bottle of Poland Spring water and took a swig to douse a case of dry mouth. ,,, The Florida senator seemed to have a sense of humor about the viral moment. Late Tuesday night he tweeted a photo of the attention-grabbing bottle.”
·        Marco Rubio Accuses Obama Of Having An 'Obsession With Raising Taxes.' Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. used the Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday to challenge the president on how to best serve the middle class, arguing that the answer to alleviating the burdens on working class people is not through taxes and spending but by supporting a free enterprise system, according to ABC's Arlette Saenz. "Tax increases can't do this. Raising taxes won't create private sector jobs. And there's no realistic tax increase that could lower our deficits by almost $4 trillion. That's why I hope the President will abandon his obsession with raising taxes and instead work with us to achieve real growth in our economy," Rubio said from the Speaker of the House's conference room in the U.S. Capitol. Rubio's speech, the first ever bilingual response to the State of the Union, comes at a time when the Republican Party is struggling with how to rebrand itself and how to appeal to a growing constituency which it lost in last year's election - Latinos.
·        Marco Rubio Responds To 'Watergate': Marco Rubio was also in good spirits this morning after the twitter frenzy surrounding his quick drink of water during his response to President Obama's State of the Union address last night. "I needed water, what am I going to do" Rubio told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America" while pulling out a bottle of water and taking a sip. "God has a funny way of reminding us we're human," he said. The Florida senator took a more serious tone when responding to the president's call for Congress to keep the government open and uphold the full faith and credit of the United States. "What really threatens to shut down our government is the $16.5 trillion debt and no serious plan to deal with it, including last night when the president seems to believe we're halfway to our goal of reducing our debt to an acceptable level," Rubio told me. "I mean no one is going to think that that is realistic when you start to look at the numbers. That's the real threat to shutting down our government. No one here is talking about shutting down the government." More from Stephanopoulos' interview with Rubio:
·        Look Out For Uncle Sam. According to a press release, The Republican National Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee are launching a joint effort today to "remind Democrats that even if they don't want to admit it, spending in Washington is a problem. Today, Uncle Sam can be spotted around the Capitol handing out flyers encouraging Americans to remind Democrats that their spending addiction must be stopped. Just this week, the two top ranking Democrats in the House have stated that they don't think Washington has a spending problem." The Communications Directors for the National Republican Committees - Sean Spicer (RNC), Brad Dayspring (NRSC) and Andrea Bozek (NRCC) - released a joint statement today on the effort: "Uncle Sam understands Washington has a spending addiction, why don't Democrats? Our nation is $16 trillion in debt, millions of hard-working families are struggling, and Democrats continue to demand higher taxes and more money to feed Washington's wasteful spending addiction. Don't give it to them."

·        The Impact Of A $9 Minimum Wage  After promising five years ago to raise the federal minimum wage, President Obama finally unveiled a plan to do so on Tuesday. In his State of the Union address, Obama pressed to raise the hourly rate in stages to $9 an hour in 2015, up from the current $7.25, and index it to inflation.
