3-27-13 MCRC Briefs

March 27, 2013
Tribute to Eddie  Bashas
by Kurt Davis,  a former AZGOP  Executive Director
There is a wonderful moment in life, if you are fortunate enough to meet someone who has repeatedly transcended life itself. A person who actually does leave a marker on this planet that will be remembered long after they depart. A giant soul who cares about others, no matter their station in life and helps with causes, no matter their popularity. A human whose convictions and pursuits are always ...met with dogged determination. And a person who laughs at himself, while trying to make those around him laugh even more.
I am fortunate to have met one of those rare, remarkable characters in my life...his name, Eddie Basha, Jr.  Interestingly, I first met him while serving as Executive Director of the Arizona Republican Party, when we tried to convince him to run for office as a Republican. Then we were on opposite sides during the 1994 Gubernatorial campaign; he as the Democratic candidate and I serving on Governor Fife Symington's staff. Shortly later, we served together on the Arizona Board of Regents, where he welcomed and mentored me as a new Regent, when he certainly didn't have to. We shared many laughs and practical jokes together during those sometimes very long Regent's meetings. I learned much from Eddie, none of which, I can ever repay.
Later in life, when my business partners and I launched our Public Affairs firm, Eddie Basha and his company were our very first clients. He actually fronted us part of our retainer, so we could get our business going. That opportunity afforded me the opportunity to learn from a man whose dreams, compassion, energy, convictions and zest for life far exceeded the efforts of 100's of men. His passion for serving his customers and his employees sets a standard that only a very few businesses can ever hope to achieve. And, he invested in my business, even though we were previous political combatants. I learned so much about how politics and leadership are done right; from a man who actually did it right. Civility towards all people is a word he lived, and didn't just say.
We often got the opportunity to talk about education, hunting, and his gun and art collections. But, those conversations would invariably always turn to the reforms Arizona needed in better serving children. Whether those children were Pre-K... or children in our public schools… or young people who were pursuing higher education. He used those opportunities to teach and cajole me into reflecting on the need for each of us to take on issues of a higher calling related to the next generation. As he lived day to day, Eddie Basha always thought about tomorrow.
So, what I learned from my friend Eddie Basha is more than I could ever write in a book or certainly on this page. But, I can state unequivocally, God gave me an incredible opportunity that I will never forget...the opportunity to learn from and laugh with a man who actually did transcend life. Now the question for me is if I can actually live out 10% of the examples he set for me.
Rest in peace my friend...your work is done here and we the people of Arizona and our nation, thank you for it. So, until we meet again...Vaya con Dios EB.
P.S. If God thought he knew how to pull off a good practical joke...just wait until He and St. Peter get a load of Eddie Basha.
·        Editor’s Note: Politico Mafioso Blogger Jeff Vath Passed Away Last Night from complications following surgery about a week ago at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phx. Whether you agreed with his commentary/posts or not, he was very much a part of the political scene of recent years - as he kept GOP leaders and local politicians on their toes with his sharp jabs, direct hits and humiliating/hilarious cartoon characters. Definitely a McCain fan, he was a thorn in the side of more conservative  county and state leadership over the past few years, but he always provided lots of food for thought. He was dedicated to the Republican party – informing and entertaining in his own fashion... an annoyance to some; but a delight to the McCain Mafia groupies. Vath’s colorful and memorable commentary will be missed. Condolence to his family.  – Frosty Taylor,  Briefs editor

·        AZ-Senate-Oks-Bill-Prohibiting-Recognition-UN/Agenda 21. SB 1403 is Sen. Judy Burges’ bill to stop Agenda 21 in the State of Arizona. Now it goes back to the House Rules Committee, chaired by J. D. Mesnard.
·        ACTION ALERT:  Supporters are urged to contact Mesnard by tomorrow (March 28) noon to make sure this bill moves ahead. 602-926-4481
·        E-Mails Were A Flutter The Past Couple Of Days demanding Speaker Of The House Andy Tobin (LD1) schedule SB1403 be discussed, debated, and voted on by the House members by Thursday (March 28).   SB1403 passed in the Senate by a vote of 16-13-1 on March 21 and passed it to the Senate. SB 1403 supporters charged Tobin refused to put the bill on the House calendar, denying the other 59 House members the ability to discuss/vote on it. leg/1r/bills/sb1403.  SB1403 prohibits the state and its political subdivisions from recognizing the United Nations or any of its declarations as legal authority in this state.  Bill_Number=1403&Session.  Contact Tobin at
·        Speaker Andy Tobin’s Side Of The Story (as written to a constituent) on the hold up of SB1403: “Here are the facts more clearly. As if it will even matter to the email blast world.
“The sponsor has done a poor job on working the bill for sure.  I don't have any committees to assign it too. Appropriations meet today on final day of committees. It's not an appropriations bill anyway. All other committees ended LAST WEEK.  It only got to my desk late Monday.  It's been in the Senate since January.  First read in the Senate on Feb 5.     sb1403o.asp&Session
“The sponsor held the bill twice on the Senate floor. Then amended it to get it voted out only last Thursday. We aren't in session on Fridays.
“So. Senate had this bill for almost two months.  I get it Monday.  Folks encouraged to "demand" a bill vote tomorrow in House without ever having a committee meeting.
“And then folks want me to tell the public why IM not moving the bill.  So, the bill sponsor and helper screw this thing up and send it to me with slimmest of chance to run it. Sound fair to you?
“Wonder why our party only gets some information.  Often times they don't want folks to see the facts.  Have to blame someone I suppose.
“I always supported the bill.  Never got a note from anyone until early Tuesday morning.  Never got a call from the sponsor or a cosponsoring Senator that it was even moving. Still haven't
“Then the response in the email blast world isn't call the sponsor and tell her it’s all screwed up, rather the sponsor will be praised for moving a bill so late it put its chances to near Zero.  And now it's my fault.
“Thanks for writing. Frustrating when sources are bad at reporting and those working the bill are bad at managing. I suggest you demand to know why it took so long to leave the Senate.
“I'm trying an option that may help but could cause much more problems by opening doors to other legislation after process. I’ll see what I can do. One needs unanimous consent and Dems won't support I'm sure. Next option is rarely used.  I’ll try.  - Andy
·        HB 2455 Passed Out Of The Senate Rules Committee on Monday March 25th and will soon be scheduled for a Senate Committee of the Whole (COW) hearing.
