·        Phx City Councilman Sal Diciccio: It's been 17 days since Mayor Stanton broke his promise to you to repeal the food tax. As we recently paid our federal income taxes – hardworking taxpayers are being taken advantage of and politicians need to keep their word. The food tax has brought in $100 million since being created two years ago. During that same period, the city has doled out $106 million in pay raises and bonuses for themselves.  The saving Police and Fire argument is now proven to be false.
My hope is that Mayor Stanton will change his mind, for the third time, and wait to see all the options for ending this tax. He promised to end the food tax this year but broke his promise within minutes of the new budget being released. Evelyn Wood, a noted speed-reader, could not have read the budget, studied it, and made a thoughtful analysis that fast.
I am working with Councilmen Bill Gates and Jim Waring to provide thoughtful and reasonable alternatives to remove the tax early. Some alternatives are:
o   Removing half of the tax this year and the other half next year.
o   Remove the entire tax or part of it through cutting government waste – with a due date of January 2014.
o   Send the repeal to the ballot and let the voters decide (worst of all options in my opinion, as it shows a complete unwillingness by the Mayor to make the tough decision, but one I am willing to accept)
We must keep looking for alternatives.  - Sal DiCiccio, Councilman, District 6
