4-8-12 MCRC Briefs

April 8, 2013
·        Ken Going, long time Republican activist and LD13 Tuscany Falls PC, passed away at home this morning (April 8) with his four children and his companion Pat Hallacy by his bedside.
Services are scheduled at 11 am, April 11 in the Ball Room of the Tuscany Falls Club House in PebbleCreek, 16222 W. Clubhouse Dr., Goodyear. Memorials and donations may be made in Going's name to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix 85014.
Long time Republican activist, Going received the Ronald Reagan Award from Gov. Jan. Brewer during the 2009 Maricopa County Republican’s Lincoln Day luncheon. Going was a former chairman of the PebbleCreek Republican Club, was the First Vice Chairman of the former LD12, and was a two-term Maricopa County Republican Committee Executive Guidance Committee (MCRC EGC) Member-at-Large and was an avid golfer. Going worked on numerous political campaigns including the elections of US Sen. Jon Kyl and US Rep. Trent Franks, Arizona legislators Rep. Jerry Weiers(now Glendale Mayor), and Rep. Steve Montenegro, and was the campaign manager for Goodyear Councilwoman (now mayor) Georgia Lord.
When he received the Reagan Award, the retiree from New York, jokingly commented “a long part of my life was spent helping Republicans in New York, which should qualify you for sainthood - not just the Reagan Award.”
He quietly backed up his talk with his wallet, although few were aware of his generous contributions. Those who know him have said “some major events would not happen without Ken,” including county conventions.
Upon learning that a local Teenage Republican (TARS) club would not be able to sell doughnuts at the annual county convention because of restrictions by the facility owners, Going made a contribution to the teens to make up for their fundraising loss.
Going was born in Mineola, Long Island to Irish immigrants.  After graduating from high school he served more than four years in the US Navy, and then spent 42 years working at the family business – Going Sign Company on Long Island.
He was involved in Suffolk and Nassau County (NY) Republican activities for 38 years and started three Republican Clubs.  He was a Suffolk PC and became a member of the Republican Chairman’s Club in Nassau County.
Some of his NY activities included running former President Richard Nixon’s campaign for the Town of Babylon, and campaigns for state senators, assemblymen, and councilmen in Babylon and Huntington. He also worked on two-term NY Gov. George Pataki’s election, coordinated Sen. John McCain’s campaign against George W. Bush in 2000, and was the coordinator for Congressman Rick Lazio’s (R) race against Hillary Clinton (D) for the US Senate from New York.
Family man, patriot and strong party member -- the twinkly-eyed Irishman will be missed. Condolence to his family.– Frosty Taylor, Briefs editor.
