5-19-13 MCRC Briefs

May 19, 2013

·        Governor Brewer: Flags Lowered for Fallen Phoenix Firefighter and Police Officer -  “In honor of Phoenix Firefighter Bradley Harper and Phoenix Police Officer Daryl Raetz, I have ordered that State flags be flown at half-staff until sunset today – Sunday, May 19, 2013 – as well as on the day of internment for both men, for which services are pending.”  Both men died last night in the line of duty.
·        In protest to the proposed “Gang of 8” amnesty bill, a "Remember 1986" - Say NO to Amnesty Rally/Camping Trip is scheduled June 6-9 at Interstate 8 Milepost 124 (7 miles east of Gila Bend), according to spokesman Barbara Heller.
Heller is calling on campers and activists to establish a “visible line in the sand” to protest the wholesale give away of our country. Participants don’t have to be there the entire four days. Participants can rotate with their camping equipment or stay at nearby motels and participate during the day.
She points out, “The lesson from the 1986 experience is that such an amnesty for those illegally in this country did not solve the problem. There was extensive document fraud, and the number of people applying for amnesty far exceeded projections. There was a failure of political will to enforce new laws against employers, and after a brief slowdown, illegal immigration returned to high levels and continued unabated, forming the nucleus of today’s large population of illegal aliens.”
BLM lands along Interstate 8 in Arizona have gained notoriety in the past because of signs posted by BLM ....essentially conceding public lands south of Interstate 8 to Mexican human and drug smugglers due to the   failure of the Federal Government to secure our nation's borders !
Heller says the rally/protest will accomplish three things:
    (1) Provide an opportunity for high public exposure/visibility to our protest/message due the high volume of daily traffic along interstate 8 (and thus bring media attention)
   (2) Act as deterrent to drug/illegal alien smuggling through these area.
   (3) Give citizens an opportunity to effect the debate, network with like-minded individuals in a casual setting, an enjoy their public lands and the great outdoors !

·        Sen Al Melvin: “Last night in DC, All 227 GOP Reps in the US House voted to repeal Obamacare. In the AZ Senate, 6 GOP Senators voted with the Dems.”
·        Weekend E-Mail Chatter Is Questioning Why The AZ GOP hasn’t taken a public stance on the Gov’s Medicaid Expansion.
·        Congressman David Schweikert: “This week has been what some people could call the sweeps week of Washington scandals. If it’s not the half-truths, missing facts, or shocking incompetences of Benghazi, it’s the AP wire taps, umbrella holding or the IRS political targeting. If you get the chance to watch clips from both of the Benghazi and IRS hearings that were held on Capitol Hill this week, count the times government and White House officials ‘did not understand the question,’ ‘did not have the answer,’ or ‘were unsure of the reason for the question.’ Sadly, these same IRS employees and their bosses who can't answer our questions in a Congressional Hearing are the bureaucrats in charge of administering ObamaCare. In fact, the IRS official in charge of the division that was discriminating and harassing conservative groups was just promoted to head the IRS' ObamaCare office because she is a "superb civil servant! If that doesn’t scare you, not much about Washington will.”
·        Arizona GOP Chairman Robert Graham will give the Tucson Republican Women an update on the AZ GOP between 5:30-8 pm May 21 at the La Paloma Country Club,  3660 E. Sunrise Drive Tucson.  $10 admission. RSVP:
·        LD11 Sen Al Melvin, Who Has An Exploratory Committee To Run For Governor,  points Out that he is the only potential candidate who is a vet, from a rural county, a sitting AZ Senator & actively working for Tort Reform. And he has spoken out against Medicaid expansion and voted against it multiple times.  Yesterday Marvin and Col Joey Strickland, former Dir of ADVS, spoke at an Armed Forces Day lunch hosted by the Pima County GOP.
·        Congressman David Schwiekert: “In response to the IRS scandal, some of my colleagues and I are demanding answers. As soon as the news broke last Friday about the IRS harassing conservative groups, I took to the airwaves to condemn the use of “non-partisan” government agencies for political use. These political ploys are downright unconstitutional behaviors and are not what America is about. I would imagine most of you would agree with me when I say, ‘we need answers and now!’”
·        LD21 Rep Debbie Lesko Sponsored Two Important Bills This Session:
ü  HB2347, signed into law by the governor, will save taxpayers money and increase transparency.  HB2347 prohibits the Arizona board of supervisors, any governing body, or board of a county, city, town, school district or other municipal corporation from levying a property tax in excess of the net amount necessary to make the annual payment for principal and interest of bonds and refunding of bonds.   Prior to this legislation, some jurisdictions were charging more taxes than needed to pay off bonds.
ü  HB2111, spearheaded by Governor Brewer and sponsored by Lesko, will dramatically improve our sales tax system, save time and money for Arizona businesses and employers, and lower consumers’ taxes.   Arizona has one of the most complicated sales tax systems in the entire country.  This legislation will put Arizona in line with what 46 other states already do.
·        Congressman David Schweikert, a primary author of the ‘JOBS’ Act, introduced the Spread Pricing Liquidity Act as a follow-up to his amendment to the ‘JOBS’ Act of 2012. The bill gives small companies with limited market capitalization greater access to public equity. Nearly 80 percent of all publically listed companies are considered small-cap. “It is my hope that we will see swift implementation of this bill in the market for the sake of small companies and job creators in desperate need of certainty and opportunity,” said Schweikert.
·        The AZ Senate Passage Of The Governor’s Medicaid Expansion Plan Remains A Hot Topic.  In some circles, candidates are already being sought to replace GOP Senators Rich Crandall -LD16; Bob Worsley - LD 25; Adam Driggs - LD 28; John McComish - LD18; Steve Pierce - LD1 And Michele Reagan - LD23 who voted with the Dems to pass the expansion.  Crandall, Worsley, McComish, Pierce and Reagan went against their LDs resolution opposing the expansion. McComish has reportedly voted with the Dems 18 times this session
·        A Movement Is Afloat To Contact To Representatives who are considered potential supporters when the Gov’s Expansion Plans goes before the House next week.  They are:
Kate Brophy McGee LD28      602-926-4486
Heather Carter LD15                      602-926-5503

·        “Jobs Is Our Primary Focus,” Said Speaker John Boehner last week. “But while we’re focused on that, we’re also focused on holding this administration accountable. Our committees are working overtime to uncover the truth about what happened in Libya. And they’re trying to get to the bottom of what happened in the IRS scandal.”
·        Seven Bills The President Has Already Signed That Repeal Or Defund Parts Of Obamacare: The House has voted three times since 2011 to fully repeal the health care law. But it’s also passed several other bills to repeal or defund parts of it that were signed into law by President Obama. See them here.
·        Clearing The Way For Keystone XL Jobs: Even if President Obama approved the Keystone XL project, bureaucratic and legal hurdles could still slow it down. The House votes this week on a bill to clear those roadblocks and pave the way for thousands of new jobs and more affordable energy.

·        Wrecking-The-Military

·        Repealing Obamacare Is All About Jobs: “Jobs is what this is all about,” said Speaker Boehner as the House voted to repeal the president’s health care law. Boehner said the red tape tower has to go if we want to create new jobs.
·        Arrested Economic Development: Watch this new video on the president’s health care law, which shows what a train wreck it is for working families. ObamaCare is driving up costs and making it harder for small businesses to hire, and Gallup says it “could be a significant drag on the U.S. economy.”
·        Premiums Skyrocketing Under Obamacare: “Internal cost estimates from 17 of the nation’s largest insurance companies indicate that health insurance premiums will grow an average of 100 percent under Obamacare,” reported the Washington Examiner. Read the Energy & Commerce Committee report
