·       The Arizona National Guard (ANG) Celebrates 148 Years Of Service On Sept 2, 2013. In the midst of the Civil War ongoing in the United States, Arizona was faced with a different kind of conflict  - “American-Indian Wars.” While much of the state was still uncharted by the government, settlers trying to find a place to call home were being terrorized by the Apache Indians. Initially, the first petitioned territorial governor, John N. Goodwin, requested federal support and was denied due to the ongoing federal conflict. In response, 350 males were “mustered in” on September 2, 1865, about 15 miles northwest of Sacaton.
The enlistees, predominantly Maricopa and Pima Indians and Mexicans, made up the 1st Arizona Volunteer Infantry. Maricopa natives were able to guide the first assault on the Apaches near Tonto Creek where they ambushed the Apaches.
“Today, 148 years later the Arizona National Guard is stronger than ever. Many of our brave men and women have seen over a decade of war and aided in many state emergencies,” said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Daniel Irving, the state chief master sergeant for the Arizona ANG.  “Our Guard members remain steadfast in supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States and serving the citizens of Arizona.”
“The Arizona National Guard is a proud and proven organization.  We are always ready, always there; for state emergencies and federal contingencies,” said Army Command Sgt. Maj. Pamela Higgins, the state command sergeant major for the Arizona Army National Guard. “We are honored to celebrate our 148th birthday and continue the legacy started by the militia.”
More than 150 Arizona Army and Air National Guard members are still serving on federal active duty in Afghanistan, the Middle East, Horn of Africa, and within the continental U.S. Over 9,300 have been called to federal active service since Sept. 11, 2001.
