·        U.S. Senators John McCain (R-Az) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) released the following statement on passage of the U.N. Security Council Resolution on Syria this evening:  “This resolution is another triumph of hope over reality. It contains no meaningful or immediate enforcement mechanisms, let alone a threat of the use of force for the Assad regime’s non-compliance. The whole question of enforcement has been deferred. In the meantime, we will hope that Assad fulfills his commitments, and if he does not, we will hope that Russia’s leaders will bring the issue back to the Security Council to impose consequences. These are the same Russian leaders who have said clearly that they will not allow a threat of force, and who still deny the undeniable fact that Assad has repeatedly used chemical weapons.

“This resolution will not fundamentally change the reality on the ground in Syria. In the weeks and months ahead, Assad and his forces will continue their war on the Syrian people. They will continue to use every weapon in their arsenal short of chemical weapons. They will continue to slaughter tens of thousands of Syrian men, women, and children. They will continue to receive massive military and other assistance from Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah. At the same time, refugees will continue to flow out of Syria by the hundreds of thousands and further destabilize Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq. The presence of Al-Qaeda and its allies will continue to grow in Syria. Absent greater assistance from the United States and our friends and allies, the Free Syrian Army and the Supreme Military Council will continue to lose ground to Al-Qaeda and other violent extremists, as we have seen this week. The fighting in Syria will go on and on, and get worse and worse, making the prospect of a negotiated end to the conflict, in Geneva or anywhere else, even less realistic than it is today. Today’s Security Council resolution will not change any of this.

“The Iranian regime is watching what we are doing with Syria, and they are taking lessons from that experience. So must we. We must realize that diplomacy with Iran can only be effective if it is backed up by a credible threat of force. We must realize that a bad deal is worse than no deal at all. And we must insist that Iran comply with its existing commitments under four Security Council resolutions. We should not accept a situation in which the diplomats talk and the Iranians continue to enrich.”
