·       Ariz. CPS Discovers Uninvestigated 6,000 Child-Abuse Allegations DES director says allegations were made to abuse hotline and came as CPS caseloads were on the rise.

·       Statement from Gov Jan Brewer: “As governor and as a mother, safeguarding Arizona’s children has been a top priority of mine. That’s why it is not only heartbreaking, but unconscionable to find out that thousands of cases within CPS have gone uninvestigated, potentially involving vulnerable, abused and neglected Arizona children. This is absolutely unacceptable. The most urgent priority is to ensure that each one of the children involved in these cases is safe.  Every case must be investigated - no exceptions, no excuses. It is not only the right thing, but it is the law. I do not want to see the lights off at CPS until this is done. I’ve instructed DES Director Carter to immediately investigate each and every case, and to request that the Department of Public Safety conduct an independent, thorough administrative review of these cases and the process that led to this situation.  DPS is charged with determining precisely how and why this inexcusable failure occurred. There must be accountability in this matter and I will insist on further reforms to make sure that it cannot happen again.”

·       A Team Of  LD11 Candidates have announced candidacy for the 2014 election. The team consists of Rep Steve Smith, activist Vince Leach, and former fire/police officer Mark Finchem.  Smith, a former State Senator, is a candidate for the State Senate that Al Melvin is expected to vacate in order to run for Governor. Leach and Finchem are candidates for the two State House seats.

In 2010, Smith beat longtime incumbent State Senator Rebecca Rios.  In 2012, after the Democrats gerrymandered the districts to force him and fellow State Senator Al Melvin into the same district, Smith switched to the State House in order to preserve party unity and to ensure that conservatives would occupy all three legislative seats.

Leach is a SaddleBrooke resident who has been involved in GOP and Tea Party groups for years.  Leach has also been active at the State Capitol advocating for conservative bills.

Finchem spent 21 years in public safety, first as a firefighter paramedic, later as a police officer.  He eventually joined the private sector where he climbed the ranks into management of a large software company.  Later, Mark made a career move into the real estate market.   Finchem lives in Oro Valley where he and his wife are involved with a number of Christian faith organizations including Young Life and Family Life Radio.
