12-12-13 MCRC Briefs

Maricopa County Republican Briefs

Maricopa County Republican Chairman: AJ LaFaro

Briefs Editor – Frosty Taylor

Dec 12, 2013

                          'Twas the month before Christmas

                 When all through our land,
                       Not a Christian was praying

                  Nor taking a stand.
Why the PC Police had taken away
The reason for Christmas - no one could say.
The children were told by their schools not to sing
About Shepherds and Wise Men and Angels and things.
It might hurt people's feelings, the teachers would say
                        December 25th is just a ' Holiday '.

Yet the shoppers were ready with cash, checks and credit.
Pushing folks down to the floor just to get it!
CDs from Madonna, an X BOX, an I-Pod
Something was changing, something quite odd!
                        Retailers promoted Ramadan and Kwanzaa
In hopes to sell books by Franken & Fonda.
As Targets were hanging their trees upside down
At Lowe's the word Christmas - was no where to be found.

At K-Mart and Staples and Penny's and Sears
You won't hear the word Christmas; it won't touch your ears.
                        Inclusive, sensitive, Di-ver-si-ty
Are words that were used to intimidate me.
Now Daschle, Now Darden, Now Sharpton, Wolf Blitzen
On Boxer, on Rather, on Kerry, on Clinton !
At the top of the Senate, there arose such a clatter
To eliminate Jesus, in all public matter.
And we spoke not a word, as they took away our faith
Forbidden to speak of salvation and grace
The true Gift of Christmas was exchanged and discarded.
The reason for the season, stopped before it started.

So as you celebrate 'Winter Break' under your 'Dream Tree,
Sipping your Starbucks, listen to me.
Choose your words carefully, choose what you say
                        Shout MERRY CHRISTMAS,
not Happy Holiday !  --- Author Unknown

·       Rep Brenda Barton of Payson is “greatly pleased ” at the sudden change of heart by the United States Forest Service (USFS) regarding restricting hunters to a 72-hour rule on camping trailer permits. “This is a wonderful example of how federal agencies can work with local communities to resolve issues like these.  It’s the holiday season and the Forest Service has finally gotten into the spirit. ” The USFS has recently reversed its seemly sudden policy of restricting hunters to a 72-hour rule.  Instead, they have made it clear that sportsmen may keep their trailers set up for the regular two-week period, and in many cases covering the term of their hunting permit. Many local economies in Barton’s sprawling rural district rely on the revenues brought to their communities by sportsmen and hunters.  Barton concluded that “…this could have had negative economic impacts on several of the local communities in my district and I truly applaud the Forest Service decision to reverse their previous action.”  Barton contact:

·       Congressman David Schweikert’s reaction to testimony from Gary Cohen, Deputy Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services during a hearing yesterday in the House Small Business Committee examining delays in program implementation of Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) exchanges. “Last week we heard from small business owners that their insurance premiums are skyrocketing as uncertainty in the implementation of the President’s health care plan is having a chilling effect on job creation and small business growth.  While the Administration is full of ‘happy’ talk, they have been unable or unwilling to provide us with the facts and data needed to realistically measure and assess the real impact on small businesses going forward.  Until we have solid data, the words and promises made by the Administration are meaningless and if the Administration isn’t willing to voluntarily provide Congress with real-time data, I will work with my colleagues on legislative action that will compel full and complete transparency.”     Full video here.

·       Gov Jan Brewer Today Lauded An Annual Report From The Government Transformation Office highlighting its efforts to improve, modernize and streamline Arizona state agencies.    “One of my priorities in public service since day one has been to make state government run as efficiently and cost-effectively for Arizona taxpayers as possible,” said Governor Brewer. “I created the Government Transformation Office for that very purpose, and it continues to successfully fulfill its mission, cutting red tape and improving the way the state accomplishes its work.” The full Government Transformation Office annual report can be viewed at:

·       Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne has announced the arrests of six members of the Sanchez Money Laundering Organization in Tucson and New York. Armando Robles Urrea, Conception Suarez-Montijo, Gladis Celaya-Reuelas, Noemi Suarez-Montijo, Frank Babcock, and Maria Yvette Sanchez-Arvizu were arrested. Luis and Julio Villagrana were spotted on Tuesday night, but fled from law enforcement and have not yet been picked up. The head of this organization, Maria Yvette Sanchez-Arvizu, is responsible for laundering over $750,000 in personal efforts alone. The Sanchez Money Laundering Organization was involved in the laundering of drug trafficking proceeds through various bank accounts and a local Tucson casino. From approximately June of 2010, and continuing through May of 2013, this group laundered approximately $1.6 million dollars.

·       CD8 Congressman Trent Franks Statement regarding his "No" vote on the Ryan/Murray budget proposal: "It is important to recognize that there are many very positive aspects of this proposal. My colleague, Rep Paul Ryan, did a masterful job of negotiating for many very good provisions with a group -- Congressional Democrats -- that have very rarely shown even the slightest willingness to work with their Republican counterparts towards serious solutions to our fiscal problem. For starters, alleviating the shameful effects of sequestration on our military is its best provision. Unfortunately, while the proposal features a number of small steps in the right direction, the overall effect is still one of increased spending for the next two years, raising user fees, and again delaying the difficult, but necessary decisions we will ultimately need to make to save our nation from the budgetary issues that threaten to destroy our nation from within unlike any military force could do. Any savings as a result of this proposal are based on the assumption that, 'We will continue to overspend for only a few more years. Then we'll really get serious.' The unfortunate reality, as we all know, is that the overspending continues, but the agreed upon belt-tightening never seems to occur."

·       CD5 Congressman  Matt Salmon Statement On The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013 (Amendment to H.J. Res. 59): “I applaud Chairman Ryan and our Republican Budget Conferees for working under difficult circumstances to negotiate a compromise with Senate Democrats, and I appreciate that this deal offers some positive items, such as helping to bring back regular order for the appropriations process, approving the Transboundary Hydrocarbon Agreement, restoring badly needed resources for our military, and making small changes to some mandatory spending programs. However, for me and most of the constituents I have heard from in my district, this deal falls short of something I could support. Unfortunately, this deal fails to even make modest reforms to our nearly bankrupted entitlement programs and it, once again, increases government spending in the short-term with only a promise to make spending cuts in the long-term. If we are not willing to make tough choices now, then how can we expect future Congresses to stop kicking the can down the road?”

“This was a grand opportunity for our nation’s leaders to reform and preserve the fiscal longevity of our entitlement programs, and this deal does not rise to that challenge. Furthermore, I have never believed that Congress should raise taxes or increase fees to justify more government spending. Sadly, this deal does exactly this by raising fees on air travelers. As we move forward under these new spending caps, my hope is that Congress and President Obama will finally recognize that our fiscal problems are not solved by raising more revenue and increasing spending, but by cutting spending and addressing our biggest crisis – unsustainable entitlement spending. We must make do with less government or our children and grandchildren will pay the heavy price as we continue to see a skyrocketing debt and runaway government spending. We must make big strides in the direction of a smaller and more efficient government in order to get our country back on the right path.”
