·        Congressman Trent Franks (R-Az) released the following statement in response to today's meeting at the White House between President Obama and Afghan President, Hamid Karzai:"After more than a dozen years at war, and thousands of tragic fatalities among United States and NATO allied troops, President Obama seems intent on doing that which is most politically expedient, and pulling out of Afghanistan as quickly as possible regardless of the implications to American national security.
o   "I urge President Obama to heed the advice of General Allen in leaving a minimum of 20,000 US troops in Afghanistan to oversee a transition to Afghan security forces.  Pulling too many troops out too quickly could squander hard-fought victories in the region.  After such an investment, over many years, in the future viability of a strong and free Afghanistan, it would be a catastrophe to see the country return to a safe haven for Al-Qaeda terrorists plotting the destruction of the United States and western civilization.
o   "It is my hope that when discussing the transition with President Karzai, President Obama stresses the importance of a future diplomatic relationship, and continued friendship in the middle east.  The world, and the middle east, faces many of the same threats it faced more than a decade ago. We must maintain a force structure and partnership that allows us to remain vigilant, responsive, and forceful toward bad actors in the region.
o   "As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I am committed to maintaining a strong and robust military force, with strong missile defense capabilities, to always protect United States citizens and the freedoms that we hold so dear."

·        The 363rd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company (EOD) Of The Arizona Army National Guard will conduct a send off ceremony at 2 pm, January 15, at the Pettycrew Armory, 5425 E. McDowell, Phx., before deploying to Afghanistan. The 10 Soldiers will first depart to Fort Bliss, Texas, for about a month of training prior to their transit to Afghanistan. All members of this unit have made multiple deployments to combat theaters in support of overseas contingency operations since 2001.
The 363rd EOD Company's primary mission will be to eliminate all explosive hazards in assigned areas and provide explosive ordnance disposal support to military and civilian organizations as required. More than 500 Arizona Army and Air National Guard members are still serving on federal active duty in Afghanistan, the Middle East, Horn of Africa, and within the continental U.S. Over 9,700 have been called to federal active service since Sept. 11, 2001.
