2-6-13 MCRC Briefs

Feb 6, 2013
·        On The 102nd Anniversary Of Ronald Reagan's Birth, Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-08) today briefly spoke from his Capitol Hill office about one of his first memories of Ronald Reagan and about the values Republicans can still learn from Reagan's leadership. Franks also introduced a "Reagan resolution" (H.Res. 56) celebrating the life of Ronald Reagan and chronicling some of the many significant milestones and achievements in his life, including his strengthening of American national defense, his work in developing our current national ballistic missile defense system, his bold reassertion of American freedom and exceptionalism, and his considerable role in the defeat of Soviet communist totalitarianism.
·        This Editor Has Early Memories Of Interviewing Ronald Reagan when he was Governor of California and came to visit a former Christian Academy at 32nd Street/ Mountain View Road in Phoenix - during a trip to see his in laws in the Biltmore area. A happy, smiling Reagan couldn’t have more pleasant to that group of students as they surrounded him with questions. A very personable man to interview as well.
·        The Arizona Federation of College Republicans (AFCR) needs your help. Over the last campaign cycle the AFCR have provided more than 10,000 hours of volunteer service to various conservative candidates and causes.  AFCR would like to be able to help sponsor at least four College Republicans who cannot afford to attend an upcoming convention.  The cost per person is roughly $600 dollars for travel and lodging. Donations can be mailed to: Arizona Federation of College Republicans Chairman Samantha Forhan, PO Box 6036 #116, Flagstaff, AZ 86011 or azcollegerepublicans@gmail.com  or call  360-920-1688.
·        The Independent Redistricting Committee (IRC) did a good job of confusing many people as to which Legislative Districts and Congressional District they currently reside in. CD Congressman Paul Gosar sent description of the new CD4 “…which contains all of Mohave County, most of Yavapai (basically excluding Sedona), all of La Paz County, Yuma north of I-8 and parts of downtown Yuma, Florence, Apache Junction, Queen Creek, and Gold Canyon in Pinal County, parts of Buckeye and the entire west north of the 10 in Maricopa County, northern Gila County including Payson, Strawberry, and Pine.”  Wickenburg, Wittman, Morristown and Aguila all fall within that northwest area of Maricopa County that wound up in CD4.
·        Tom Morrow, Former Editor Of The Valley News/Views In The North Phoenix recently signed a contract with an Arizona publisher for four more books.  Morrow has written several novels and non-fiction books regarding WWII  www.oldwarriorbooks.com . Morrow, a retired columnist for an Orange County, CA newspaper, he is currently the Vice President of Communications for California Pacific Airlines.  The long-time Republican and former Phoenix police officer earned the National ‘Suburban Journalist of the Year’ Award in the early 1970s for his writings on former AZ Sen. Paul Fannin’s DJUI and Miranda Rights.
·        Burn Survivor Boyd Smith’s Remarkable Recovery Story Continues as he leaves the Arizona Burn Center at Maricopa Medical Center to enter rehab. As you may recall, Smith who was born with no arms and only one leg, was trapped in his home in Black Canyon City several months ago after getting his entire family out of the burning trailer. Burned over 90% of his body, he has endured numerous surgeries to get to this point in his recovery.  Smith is a former Paradise Valley School District maintenance crew member and rodeo star.  See Mike Watkiss interview at Boyd Smiths amazing recovery

·        Secretary Of State Ken Bennett Will Join Officials From Other Border States and Mexican development secretaries at the inaugural Economic Forum of the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) and Association of Mexican State Economic Development Directors later this week. The forum includes working sessions on transportation, education and workforce, exports, regionalization, and support for small and mid-size business.
During the forum it is expected that Bennett will sign an agreement of economic development cooperation with officials from Mexico which according to the US State Department is the third largest trading partner of the United States.
“Arizona  is in a unique position to benefit from international trade especially with Mexico and Latin America,” said Bennett.  “We must do everything we can to foster a positive atmosphere for economic development.  Each time a truck crosses the border — in either direction — Arizona’s economy grows.  With California’s ridiculously high taxes and Mexico’s potential for growth, our state has a fantastic opportunity to attract business from each direction. International trade is a growth area for small business and large corporations and we hope to promote growth here and across the nation.  Experts predict Mexico will become the world's eighth largest economy by 2050.  If we can take advantage of our location, Arizona’s growth over the next 100 years will add a sixth ‘C’ to our famous five.  Commerce!” www.azsos.gov
Gov Jan Brewer today announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has agreed granted a Secretarial Disaster Designation to Yavapai County, as well as five contiguous counties, in response to intense drought that has impacted the region in recent years. With this federal designation, farm operators in Yavapai and neighboring counties – including Coconino, La Paz, Mohave, Gila and Maricopa – now are eligible to apply for low-interest emergency loans from the Farm Service Agency (FSA). In January, a Secretarial Disaster Designation was issued for Apache, Gila, Graham, Greenlee Navajo, Pima and Pinal counties. Today’s designation leaves just two Arizona counties – Santa Cruz and Cochise – awaiting eligibility for federal funding.
·        The Maricopa County Republican Committee (MCRC) Monthly Board And Executive Guidance Council (EGC) meetings are scheduled for tomorrow, Feb 7 at 6:30 pm and 7pm respectively.
Ø  The MCRC Monthly Board Meeting is always held in closed Executive Session. The Feb 7 MCRC EGC meeting will also be held in closed executive session due to the confidential nature of the brainstorming and working session to develop the MCRC's Two Year Strategic Plan and Budget.  Only the members of the MCRC EGC will be authorized to attend - LD Chairmen, Executive Committee, Members-At-Large, and Non-Voting Members Frosty Taylor (Communications) & Diana Duran (West Valley Office Manager).
Ø  All future meetings, that aren't held in closed Executive Session, will only be open to members of the MCRC EGC, verified registered Precinct Committeemen, verified registered Arizona Republicans, and authorized scheduled speakers.  MCRC Chairman A J LaFaro.
·        Robert Graham, Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, is forming a committee of to plan for Arizona's next redistricting process in 2020. "Arizona's political landscape today reflects a flawed process where election districts were drawn up based on a one-sided political agenda and too much secrecy, and I'm taking action now to make sure that doesn't happen again," said Graham.  "We are looking for an honest and open process that doesn't favor one group of voters over another -- one that is truly bipartisan and treats voters equally while putting an end to the discrimination against Republicans."
Graham is asking those interested in serving on the committee to contact the Arizona Republican Party at 602-957-7770 to apply for membership on the committee, with a deadline of Feb 28.  The committee will have nine members, one from each of Arizona's congressional districts.
The redistricting process in Arizona occurs each decade after the US Census population counts are completed and is based on the requirements in the U.S. Constitution.  The borders of Arizona's 30 legislative and nine congressional districts were drawn in 2010 by the Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission, but the election results clearly prove the lines favored the Democrat candidates for Congress.
