LD17 Chairman Tyler
Bowyer, a student AZ Board of Regents member, was the lone vote against Gov. Jan
Brewer’s Medicaid expansion proposal. Bowyer said, “We've got to stand our
ground on the Medicaid issue. On Thursday, I spoke one on one with Governor
Brewer for almost a half hour, clearly demonstrating the conservative
viewpoint. I was the lone vote on the board of regents not supporting Medicaid
expansion. I hope that you will share and support the position that we must
continue to fight intrusive government and preserve our state's fiscal
sovereignty.” Brewer appointed Bowyer to
the AROR in 2011.

Yesterday, HB 2455
Was Added To House Public Safety, Military And Regulatory Affairs (PSMRA)
Committee’s Agenda for Feb 13. HB
2455 is an AzCDL requested bill that would clarify that firearms voluntarily
surrendered to a state or local entity cannot be destroyed and must be sold.
Recently, the city of Tucson destroyed several hundred firearms after they
staged a gun “buy back” program, claiming that current state law, forbidding
the destruction of firearms, did not apply to surrendered firearms. HB 2455
broadens the statutory definitions to included surrendered firearms. AzCDL
officials ask that supporters contact the PSMRA committee members and urge them
to pass HB2455. A prepared letter, addressed to all the PSMRA committee
members, is waiting for you at AzCDL’s Legislative Action Center. You can send
the message we have prepared or edit what is there. AzCDL monitoring: Bill Tracking page.

Congressman Franks
Criticizes Bombing Former Camp Liberty: "I condemn, in the strongest of
terms, the vicious terrorist attacks on Camp Liberty currently sheltering
Iranian dissident group, the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK). I call on the
United Nations and the U.S. Department of State to closely follow the
investigation of this attack underway by Iraqi authorities. Further, the
MEK deserves better security protections and housing to shelter them from the
world's foremost sponsor of terrorism, Iran. In these uncertain times, the
United States must continue to serve as the beacon of freedom around the world,
and ensure justice against such senseless acts of terror," Congressman
Trent Franks said.
