2-28-13 MCRC Briefs

Feb 28, 2013
·        LD17 has joined LD22 in passing a resolution in opposition to the Governor’s expansion of Medicaid (AHCCCS) in support of Obamacare. LD17 passed their opposition resolution at their Feb. 26 meeting. The Maricopa County Repubican Committee Executive Guidance Committee (MCRC EGC) will mostly likely be discussing this issue at the next EGC meeting.
·        Sheriff Babeu’s Letter: Dear Secretary Janet Napolitano, I'm writing to formally request information about the hundreds of criminal illegals who were released from custody and set free in Pinal County this week. I am requesting detailed information about the identity, criminal history, and threat assessment on every single criminal that your agency released under your recent budget pardon. I have already requested this information from your staff here in Arizona, however it has been denied.
You can’t have it both ways! Your office now says these are low risk and non-violent criminals, yet Director John Morton, yourself, and President Obama have consistently argued that ICE lacks the funds to house all criminal illegals and you only focus your limited financial resources to identify, imprison, and deport the worst 34,000 of the estimated 11 million illegals here in the United States.
This is the same group that we are talking about here and the same criminal illegals that even you and President Obama has said you wanted to deport. Protocol and logic should have required your staff to formally notify me, as the top law enforcement official in the county where this occurred, about this mass release of hundreds of foreign criminals into my county and elsewhere, yet regrettably this never happened.
Even as the constitutionally elected Sheriff, I do not have any authority to release inmates or detainees in my jail without judicial action. The silence from ICE in failing to answer if any judge was involved with this release or the change of the terms of their detention is what we in law enforcement call a clue. Supervised release for any foreign criminal is laughable.
What incentive do criminal illegals have to report in to the authorities or for them not to cut off their ankle bracelet? What is the worst punishment would they face - deportation? Recidivism rates are extremely high for any incarcerated individual, yet this population will be higher.
Those who were released had no prior notice of being set free, which is important for each of them, as well as your staff to assist in preparing for transition into the community and to ensure some safety net. They lack the money, family support, and ability to get a job - not just because they have a criminal record, but because they're NOT U.S. citizens. This mass release is a recipe for disaster. Future victims of likely crimes will hold you and your administration responsible.  - Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu
·        Administration Again Makes Criminals' Lives Easier: Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-08) today responded to the release of several hundred detainees by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a decision blamed on pending sequestration cuts:"Whether arming dangerous criminals across the border during Operation Fast and Furious or releasing hundreds of detained undocumented illegal immigrants convicted of offenses ranging from drunk driving to theft, this Administration has shown a truly disturbing tendency to actively make criminals' lives significantly easier.
"In every instance, the White House has claimed to be unaware of the activities, as if an executive branch headed by an uninformed executive with no control over his own appointees is somehow a more comforting alternative. To this point, over 300 detained illegal immigrants have been released in Arizona alone. I intend to work with my colleagues, including Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, and House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, in seeking answers related to this inexcusable display of ineptitude and lack of preparation."
·        Sen Jeff Flake will be featured at the The Arizona Chamber Of Commerce And Industry ‘Capitol Hill Luncheon’ scheduled at noon April 2 at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix, 122 N. 2nd St., Phx. $60 per member. $75 per non-members.  tickets   Contact Katie Whitchurch  602-248-9172 x126     kwhitchurch@azchamber.com
·        Border-Patrol-Effectiveness-Not-Measured-By-Amount-Of-Border-Patrolled  Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano is fond of claiming that U.S. border security is “better than ever.” However, a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report that details how DHS quantifies how well the borders are guarded tells a different story
·        VAWA Funding: Assessment Of Effects On Rape & Assault  Although evaluations of process and implementation suggest that the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) funding program has resulted in positive outcomes, no study has evaluated its impact on violent crime. This study examines panel data from 1996 to 2002 (10,371 jurisdictions) throughout the United States. Findings indicate that VAWA grants were associated with reductions in rape and assault. These relationships persisted after controlling for general downward crime trends and effects of other justice grants. The results provide support for continued existence of this funding stream and for additional evaluation to determine exactly which programs funded are effective in reducing crime.
·        The March Issue Of School Reform News Reports Public Officials Are Meeting Behind Closed Doors In States Across The Country To Plan Implementation Of New Common Core Math And English Language Standards, shutting out the parents whose children will be affected by the standards and the taxpayers whose money will fund the implementation.
·        Congressman David Schweikert (R-AZ) made the following statement on the House Floor Thursday to express his disappointment that the Cole-Issa tribal amendment was not allowed to be offered during debate on the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). To watch his floor remarks, click here: “I wanted to share a certain frustration, particularly about the votes we just had here in the House. I come from Arizona. We have 22 tribal communities--21 actual designated reservations. I’ve lived almost my entire life alongside the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community. It’s a sophisticated tribe with wonderful outreach into the community. They’ve come light-years in the last ten. They’ve done amazing things.  And we have been working with that community and Congressman Cole’s office, trying to work on language that would work with them in VAWA.
“And yet Congressman Cole and Congressman Issa, were not allowed in the process to offer their amendments. And that’s of great frustration to me because there were months and months of labor and work put into that. But there was also another irony here and I heard some folks on the Right, and a lot on the Left, talking about it. ‘Well the self determination of the court process within those tribal communities...’Okay, great! Are we now ready to have this body step up and help our tribes in Arizona that are sophisticated manage their own finances? Their own healthcare? Because they are asking for that self determination.”
·        Sen Jeff  Flake says: So, while the Obama Administration is announcing civilian military furloughs, curtailing training missions and keeping carrier strike groups shoreside, programs like the“Great Green Fleet,” a $500 million three year multi-agency boondoggle, keep limping along. During a demonstration last summer, the Navy spent $27 per... gallon for algae-based jet fuel (conventional fuel costs about $3.50 per gallon). I'm not trying to minimize the impact of the sequester on the military. It is significant (and disproportionate). But I am suggesting is that the Administration isn't exactly prioritizing as it should. I'll be providing other examples from other federal agencies in the coming days. I'd appreciate any input you might have.  Contact Flake:  www.flake.senate.gov
·        Spitzer’s Letter to Editor: Folks forget that even without a budget for nearly 4 years, the federal government spent $3.5 Trillion this past year while taking in about $2.2 trillion, thus driving the national debt even higher. The sequester will stop the rate of increased spending.  There are no cuts in federal spending.  No federal agency will get less to spend; they will get more to spend, just not as much more as they wanted.  So all of this scare tactic reporting is false.  The federal government is adding $1 Trillion or more to the deficit each year, a deficit that is nearing $17 Trillion.  To cut less than $45 billion from this years spending increase projection - the fiscal year ends in September - is less than 2% of the bloated budget projected increase.  This is typical leftist propaganda of fear mongering and scare tactics.  And the media falls for it every time. Ray Spitzer – Former LD9 Chairman, current Sun City West Republican Club Chairman

·        Editor’s Note:  Any attempt to intimidate a journalist into silence – no matter how veiled it may be - is a form of censorship. That’s why Bob Woodward’s exposure story is so important. Woodward and Carl Bernstein broke the Watergate story in the early 1970s that resulted in Richard Nixon’s downfall.
