3-5-13 MCRC Briefs

·        HB 2455 Passed Out Of The House Rules Committee on March 4 and will soon be scheduled for a House Committee of the Whole (COW) hearing. HB 2455 Is An AzCDL-Requested Bill That Would Clarify That Firearms Voluntarily Surrendered (e.g., via a “buy back” program, etc.) to a state or local entity cannot be destroyed and must be sold. HB 2455 clarifies that firearms in possession of state or local governments cannot be destroyed, regardless of how they were acquired, and must be sold if legal to do so under federal and state law. HB 2455 needs to pass out of the COW hearing before a formal Third Read Vote can be conducted. Third Read is the last step for a House bill before it is sent to the Senate. A letter for you to send to your Representatives on HB 2455 has been prepared and is waiting for you to send at AzCDL’s Legislative Action Center.

·        LD27 And Cochise County Republicans Have Joined LDs 12, 15, 16, 17, 22 And The Pima County Republicans in passing resolutions in opposition to the Governor’s Medicaid Expansion (AHCCCS) in support of Obamacare. 

·        LD1, 13, 20, 21, And 30 Are Also Reportedly Working On Similar Opposition resolutions to bring before their PCs at upcoming meetings.

·        The Northern Arizona University College Republicans are planning a trip to Washington DC for CPAC between March 13-18.  In order to send students they are selling raffle tickets for a Tasers C2 that retails for $400. ·        Joseph Hobbs, a Member at Large on the Maricopa County Republicans Executive Guidance Committee is the latest activitist to toss a hat into the ring to fill Board Supervisor Max Wilson’s position.  In his official announcement, Hobbs said, “.  “Max Wilson has served with distinction and he will be missed.” said Hobbs, adding “I believe I can continue Max’s work in terms of looking out for the best interests of our district and the taxpayers of Maricopa County as a whole.”
     Joseph Hobbs is an IT Consultant and President of Optical-IP-Networks LLC.  He holds a Master’s degree with emphasis in Telecommunication Sciences and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems (Minor in Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems).  
     Hobbs is a member at large on the Maricopa County Republican Executive Guidance Committee (MCRC EGC)  and is an elected precinct committeeman.  Hobbs can be reached at jh@optical-ip-networks.com with “Hobbs BoS Volunteer” in the subject line.

·        Long time Republican activist and former AZ Legislator Jean McGrath, who is serving her second term on the Central Arizona Project Board of Directors, has also announced her candidacy for Wilson’s Board of Supervisors opening.  She is a long-time GOP precinct committeeman. McGrath ran against Wilson in the 2012 primary. McGrath has been an Arizona resident since childhood, earned a BA degree from Arizona State University, owned McGrath Growers and is a former president of the Peoria-Glendale Farm Bureau.   She served in the Arizona legislature from 1995 to 2000. She received a “Friend of the Taxpayer” from the Americans for Prosperity.

·        Jack Harper, another former Arizona legislator, is also seeking Wilson’s position. Harper grew up in Arizona, attended college before entering the US Army, where he served two years in Germany, followed by six years with theARizona Army National Gudard. He served as an Arizona  legislator for eight years - as both a representative and a senate for old LD4 – terming out in 2012.  Harper and his wife Holly have two grown daughters.  Harper is a long-time GOP precinct committeeman. ·        Dick Hensley, who ran for the Board of Supervisors in the 2012 primary, has also announced his candidacy for Wilson’s position. He moved to Arizona in 2011. Hensley can be reached at hensley74@msn.com

·        Reports are circulation that one of Wilson’s daughter is also seeking the position.

·        A Medicaid Expension Forum is scheduled from 6:30-8:30 pm, March 7 at the Loft Cineman, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd, Tucson. ·        Federal Aid Programs for the Navajo Nation The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that federal disaster aid has been made available for the Navajo Nation and ordered federal aid to supplement the Tribe’s efforts in the area affected by a severe freeze during the period of December 15, 2012 to January 21, 2013. Federal funding is available to the Navajo Nation and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe freeze.

·        TSA Prohibited Items List Changing April 25 - Small Pocket Knives and Some Sporting Goods Items to be Permitted: TSA established a committee to review the prohibited items list based on an overall risk-based security approach. After the review, TSA Administrator John S. Pistole made the decision to start allowing the following items in carry-on bags beginning April 25:
ü  Small Pocket Knives – Small knives with non-locking blades smaller than 2.36 inches and less than 1/2 inch in width will be permitted
ü  Small Novelty Bats and Toy Bats
ü  Ski Poles
ü  Hockey Sticks
ü  Lacrosse Sticks
ü  Billiard Cues
ü  Golf Clubs (Limit Two)
These similar items will still remain on the prohibited items list:
ü  Razor blades and box cutters will remain prohibited in carry-on luggage.
ü  Full-size baseball, softball and cricket bats are prohibited items in carry-on luggage.
