·        Former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas has launched his campaign for Arizona governor.
    Application Deadline For The Dodie London Leadership Training For Women is May 24.  See application and details: at www.dodielonden.com
·        There is a movement afloat not to sign State Supt of Education John Huppenthal’s re-election petition, nor work on his campaign until he backs away from Common Core. An Indiana grassroots group stopped the implementation of Common Core and PARCC and voters ousted the Indiana Superintendent.  Contact:  Jennifer Reynolds  480-961-4214 http://arizonansagainstcommoncore.com/Why_Against_CC.html

·        “Bick” Bicknell, Immediate Past President Of The Maricopa County Health District, will be speaking to the Sun City Grand Republican Interest Group at 9 am, May 18.  AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham will also address the group.
·        Statement from Gov Jan Brewer - Federal Court Rejects Injunction against State of Arizona for Deferred Action Policy   “I applaud the federal court for its ruling today denying an injunction sought against the State of Arizona and the Division of Motor Vehicles and dismissing the claim that federal law somehow preempted the State’s ability to decide who is issued a driver’s license. This portion of the ruling is not only a victory for the State of Arizona – it is a victory for states’ rights, the rule of law and the bedrock principles that guide our nation’s legislative process and the division of power between the federal government and states.  I am confident that a fully-developed record will further vindicate the State of Arizona. Let me be clear: this fight has never been about the ‘Dreamers.’ As Governor, I have taken an oath to uphold the laws of Arizona. I will continue to vigorously defend the citizens of Arizona and the duly-enacted laws of our State.”
·        Message From Sen. Nancy Barto: Today the Arizona Senate proposed a REPUBLICAN budget.  Tomorrow, sparks will fly.  Senate Democrats and a few Republicans are expected to try to tack on the Obamacare Medicaid expansion through amendments.You can watch the sparks LIVE on your computer here or better yet…be in the Senate gallery at 10:30 a.m. and watch the action in person.  If you can’t do either, you can send your thoughts to all Republican Senators and let them know you support a REPUBLICAN budget – not a budget that:
o   Commits AZ to an unaffordable Medicaid program permanently (at the expense of funding for other priorities, like Education)
o   Raises taxes on select hospitals & gives the AHCCCS Director authority to raise them further
o   Increases funding for abortion providers (see attached pdf)
o   Creates $100 million slush fund for the Legislature – annually (from the hospital ‘assessment’)
o   AZ small businesses oppose - Check out NFIB recent polling
o   AZ Republicans overwhelmingly oppose – resolutions passed by Republican clubs throughout the state, including District 15
The Supreme Court gave Arizona a choice not to expand Medicaid according to the dictates of Obamacare.  Let’s make the right choice! Let’s join the 27 states saying NO to so-called “free” federal money.  Who’s going to pay the tab? YOU are. -- Senator Nancy Barto    www.NancyBarto.com
·        The Phoenix “Remember 1986 Coalition”  joined with a coalition of citizen lobbyist and border control organizations in calling on Congress to solve the illegal immigration crisis that has plagued the U.S. for decades.  The “Remember 1986 Coalition” reform includes:
o   Mandatory use of E-Verify by employers to ensure a legal workforce;
o   Enforcement of existing immigration laws;
o   Real border security with secure border fencing to prevent unlawful entry;
o   Reasonable annual legal immigration levels;
o   An end to birthright citizenship for children born to parents who are not citizens or Legal Permanent Residents; and
o   Corrections in guest worker programs to end fraud and abuse.
The Coalition is working to educate Members of Congress and the public about the adverse consequences of our ill-advised national immigration policies and to advocate real, common sense solutions that adjust our policies to the needs of the citizenry.
If passed by Congress, S. 744 would have disastrous consequences for American workers and taxpayers. S. 744 would add 33 million foreign job seekers in the next decade alone. That would be like re-creating ALL of the Top 20 cities in the United States, filling them entirely with foreign citizens and giving them lifetime work permits to compete with America’s struggling workers — and in just 10 years time. ·        Seventy Soldiers Of The Phoenix-Based Detachment 850th Military Police Battalion Of The Arizona Army National Guard Returned on May 2 from their deployment to Qatar in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This deployment marks the first time this unit has mobilized in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Soldiers are from Avondale, Buckeye, Casa Grande, Chandler, Flagstaff, Florence, Gilbert, Glendale, Goodyear, Mesa, Peoria, Phoenix, Prescott Valley, Queen Creek, Red Rock, Rio Rico,  San Tan Valley, Scottsdale, Somerton, Surprise, Taylor, Tempe, Tolleson, Tucson, Yuma, and Clifton, CO. More than 10,000 Arizona Army and Air National Guard Soldiers and Airmen have answered the call and been ordered to federal active duty in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn, Noble Eagle, and other overseas contingency operations as well as border security missions since September 2001.
·        U.S. Reps. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz  and Ann Kirkpatrick, D-Ariz., facilitated a meeting today between senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials,  Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and Board of Supervisors Chairman Steve Miller to renegotiate the terms of a Pinal County Jail contract that goes back to 2006. In a May 8 joint letter to ICE, in which Gosar and Kirkpartick wrote, “Federal unfunded costs should not be imposed on the taxpayers of Pinal County, Arizona … If the costs of housing an inmate are in fact higher than the federal reimbursement rate, there is a serious issue that must be addressed.” ICE officials are moving forward in considering Pinal County’s request to renegotiate the contract terms and reimbursement rate.
Babeu said, “Just last week, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors was set to vote and give ICE a 100-day notice on their intent to cancel the contract between Pinal County and ICE to house their detainees in our facility. The County Manager told the Board of Supervisors he was unsuccessful due to the sequester to negotiate with ICE any changes to the contract. While this was occurring, I reached out to Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick and Congressman Paul Gosar and asked them both for immediate assistance. In a matter of days, they were able to facilitate a meeting with top-level ICE officials, who immediately agreed to begin the negotiation process. Thanks to Congresswoman Kirkpatrick and Congressman Gosar’s immediate attention, ICE has agreed to help resolve this issue, which will save 130 to 200 of my employees’ jobs. Myself and my staff are extremely appreciative of their intervention.”###
