·       AG Tom Horne: US Supreme Court Decision Shows Ultimate Path For Arizona Victory: Today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Arizona’s voter registration citizenship proof requirement is not the end of the process, and the Court set forth a clear pathway to victory for that requirement, Attorney General Tom Horne said today. “The U.S. Supreme Court has given us a clear path to victory for the people of Arizona, who overwhelmingly approved the state constitutional amendment that was the subject of the legal challenge,” Horne said.  "Since the U.S. Supreme Court has made it clear that this pathway exists, Arizona should use it. The sanctity of the ballot box is a cherished right for all Americans and it must be protected.”
In the case of Arizona v Intertribal Council, Arizona sought a reversal of a Ninth Circuit ruling that Arizona was prohibited from asking people registering to vote for evidence of citizenship. Although the Supreme Court declined to reverse the Ninth Circuit at this time, at page 15 of the Opinion, the Supreme Court laid out a path for eventual victory by the state.
At page 15, the Courts stated: "Since the power to establish voting requirements is of little value without the power to enforce those requirements, Arizona is correct that it would raise serious constitutional doubts if a federal statute precluded a State from obtaining the information necessary to enforce its voter qualification”.
In this case, Arizona has a constitutional right to obtain the information (evidence of citizenship) necessary to enforce its voter qualifications (that only citizens can vote).
To obtain this constitutional relief, the Court stated that Arizona would have to go to the Federal Elections Assistance Commission, and if it does not obtain relief there, go back to Court. Arizona did seek this relief in 2005, which was denied, and, under a previous Attorney General, Arizona did not appeal. The Court made clear that Arizona could return to the EAC and then, if it failed to get relief, return to Court.  http://youtu.be/-2o4i-EWOHc
·       Speaker Andy Tobin - Responding To Ruling On Prop 200: “Only citizens of the United States have the constitutional right to vote and therefore, no others should be allowed to register. This is the undeniable fact that served as the driving force behind Arizona’s Prop 200 which received overwhelming support from Arizona voters. The decision handed down today does not change that central and elemental requirement. However, it does temporarily force Arizona to accept federal voter registration forms with no requirement to prove citizenship.
Although Prop 200 opponents may be crowing over this latest victory in the battle against the will of the people of Arizona, they will ultimately lose the war. All nine justices agreed that every state, including Arizona, still retains the authority to determine who is qualified to vote in elections. The majority opinion even suggests a course of action for Arizona to work with federal authorities to ensure that proof of citizenship be required for future elections.
Although I am disappointed that the Supreme Court chose to have Arizona jump through additional hoops, I remain confident and determined that we will find ways to ensure the undisputed integrity and legitimacy of our state’s electoral process. I support Secretary of State Bennett as he implements the process requesting new state-specific instructions, as outlined by the Supreme Court, which will allow Arizona to retain its legitimate authority to require proof of citizenship from all who seek to exercise their constitutional right to register to vote.”
·       Robert Graham, Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, statement regarding today's release of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Arizona's Proposition 200, which was passed by a majority of voters in 2004. At issue is the voter-passed requirement that voter registration forms be accompanied by proof of citizenship, which is clearly printed in the instructions on the Arizona voter registration forms used in all 15 counties as a result of Prop 200.  The court upheld that requirement.
"On balance it was a good ruling.  The Court has clearly held as legitimate Arizona's own efforts to combat voter fraud when registering to vote using the Arizona Voter Registration Form.  This is good news for every Arizona voter," said Graham.
Unlike the state voter registration form, the federal form does not require proof of citizenship -- only an oath taken under penalty of perjury that the registrant is a citizen and eligible to vote.  The Court concluded that when elections officials accept the federal form, they can determine a voter's eligibility using other means.
"The burden, however, is still on the state to determine a voter's eligibility to register when using the federal form," Graham said.  "The Court not only recognized, but outright suggested that Arizona can still act to continue to protect the integrity of our elections by requesting the Federal Election Assistance Commission approve state-specific instructions on the federal form."
·       Governor Jan Brewer - Balanced, Conservative Budget Upholds Core State Priorities:  “Today, I had the pleasure of signing into law Arizona’s most sweeping health care legislation in decades, as well as a State budget that is conservative, comprehensive and responsible. Best of all, this Fiscal 2014 spending plan is balanced. I commend and applaud legislators of both chambers, representing both sides of the aisle, who helped make these achievements possible. This State budget holds the line on spending, with just a 3.4 percent increase from a year ago. But it also recognizes the areas in which we have overdue needs, directing critical resources to child safety and education. More important long term, the Medicaid plan will employ federal assistance to reduce pressure on our General Fund, allowing us to finally stop facing the false choice between supporting health care or education. The road to this moment has been long and difficult, but it has been worth the ride. Today, I can proudly point to a budget that has been crafted out of bipartisanship and with the future of Arizona in mind. I thank the lawmakers who worked with me in good faith to get this done.”

§  Bruce Ash -  Arizona's  Republican National Committeeman: The US Senate has taken up comprehensive immigration reform. Not surprisingly Senate democrats view comprehensive immigration reform as a means to secure a permanent majority for their political party. Democrats are very vocal in stating political means as their goal within a feigned narrative supporting those who broke existing federal laws by entering the country and working here.
What IS surprising is that some Senate Republicans (and we know who they are ) foolishly believe they can do business with democrats on immigration . Their goal? Also to harvest new Latino votes which they mistakenly view as the reason Republicans lost the last two presidential elections outright and have secured only one popular vote in a national election since 1988.
Both sides are wrong. The new, nearly 900 page immigration document being considered, is no better than the current law because in the hands of the federal government immigration enforcement likely won't be handled any better than it currently is. Most Americans believe the federal government is too big already and cannot be trusted so why will a new law have any impact on something so important to the country if enforcement is secondary to granting citizenship. Isn't it time The Congress views comprehensive immigration reform as means to promote LEGAL immigration and employ smart enforcement based national policy  to successfully  stimulate the economy and promote our national security ?  Politicizing our national immigration policy to win elections is bad policy.
