8-6-13 MCRC Briefs

Maricopa County Republican Briefs
Aug 6, 2013

Editor’s Note:  Attention Arizona Congressmen: You are home from Washington, DC for the next five weeks. So far, Briefs has been informed of only one Congressional Town Hall meeting scheduled on the home front. Congressman Paul Gosar’s Town Hall will be held 6 pm, Sept 24 at 7401 East Civic Circle, Prescott Valley, AZ 86314
            As soon as the rest of you schedule Town Halls in Arizona over the next month, please submit that information to repcomm@cox.net so readers have the opportunity to attend.  The precinct committeemen and voters who put you into office want to discuss the issues of upmost importance to Arizona and this nation. And they deserve straight forward answers.  An e-mail received today urges Briefs to encourage you to set Town Halls in the evening so working folks have the opportunity to attend.  In retirement areas, you might consider holding morning and evening Town Halls to accommodate our seniors.  Seniors may not drive at night, but they sure do vote – both early ballots and at the polls. Grassroots Republicans anxiously await your Town Hall announcements. – Frosty Taylor, editor

·       Today, Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05) released the following open letter regarding President Obama’s trip to Arizona:
Dear President Obama,
Welcome to Arizona. Like so many other states, our citizens have endured high unemployment, rising energy prices and a struggling economy. Hardworking Arizonans are finding it more difficult to provide for their families, find good-paying jobs, help pay for their children’s college or save for retirement. Sadly, achieving the American Dream has become less likely for most Arizonans.
As you visit Arizona to discuss your domestic agenda and try to once again appeal to the middle-class, I hope you will announce your intentions to take four important steps that will increase jobs and boost the economy.
  • Eliminate the burdensome EPA regulations that are scheduled to go into effect at the Navajo Generating Station and will increase the cost of energy and water throughout the State of Arizona;
  • Repeal costly Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act mandates affecting our local community colleges, municipalities, small businesses, and families;
  • Approve the Transboundary Hydrocarbon Agreement with our neighbor Mexico to reduce the cost of energy and create good-paying jobs;
  • Approve the Keystone Pipeline to reduce the cost of energy, create jobs, and protect our national security interests
The message I continue to receive from Arizona constituents is this – get the government out of our lives, our healthcare and our businesses.
By taking these four steps we can answer their call for limited government and help all Americans attain the American Dream.
I look forward to working with you to make a better and more prosperous Arizona and America.
Let’s put politics aside and get to work.   - Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05)

·       AZGOP Responds to Obama visit: Robert Graham, Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, commented on President Obama's layover stop to make a speech at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix.
            "President Obama is trying to take credit for the good economic news coming out of Arizona, but we all know it's thanks to the economic policies that came out of our Republican Legislature and were signed into law by our Republican Governor Jan Brewer," said Graham.  "Arizona also has a balanced state budget and a low-tax and business-friendly environment.  We've cut taxes, we've created jobs, and we're very competitive when it comes to bringing new business to Arizona."
            In 2011 Arizona's Republican Legislature and Governor passed a large jobs bill and created broad-based tax cuts, and cut overall state government spending by 30 percent.  CNN Money has called Arizona the number one most entrepreneurial state in the nation and Chief Executive Magazine ranked Arizona the sixth most friendly state for businesses to start and thrive. The Kauffman Index declared Arizona the premier place for entrepreneurs.
            In 2012 Arizona was in the top ten for growth and is one of the top in the nation for population growth thanks to people moving here from other states.
            "The real news here is that Arizona is showing the signs of an economic recovery, despite the federal government which has done nothing more than create economic instability," Graham said.  "Credit should go to our entrepreneurs and business owners, our investors, and to the voters who elected conservative Republicans to lead our state and put us on the road to recovery."

·       Phoenix Voters May Cast An Early Ballot for the Phoenix City Council Elections during business hours at Phoenix City Hall, 200 W. Washington St., 15th floor, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Thursday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 23.  Other early voting sites will be open on Saturday, Aug. 10 and Aug. 17. Those times, dates and locations are:

Approximately 208,000 Phoenix voters who are on the permanent early voting list (PEVL) begin receiving early ballots, Aug. 1. If residents are not on the PEVL and wish to receive an early ballot by mail, request forms are available online and at city public service counters and libraries. A signed, written request must be received by Aug. 16.
Voted early ballots must be received by the City Clerk no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters are advised to allow sufficient time for mail delivery by Election Day. Voted early ballots also may be delivered to early voting or voting center locations during voting hours.
In addition, voters are reminded to take the time needed to consider and mark their ballot, but voters who complete their ballots early are encouraged to return the ballot as soon as it is voted. Returning voted ballots as early as possible provides more time for signature verification and processing so that final results are available sooner.
Accessible voting devices that permit voters with disabilities to vote independently will be available at the early voting sites and voting center locations.
For more information about the August election, contact the City Clerk Department at 602-261-VOTE (8683), TTY 602-534-2737 or visit phoenix.gov/elections.
