·        Tom Husband: Former MCRC Executive Director: “It is amusing to watch the subservient sycophants with their serf mentalities attempt to defend John McCain, their political god, against the censure by the Arizona Republican Party. They even went so far as to try to depict my resignation as a protest to the passage of the censure. Au contraire, my resignation is better characterized as Mission Accomplished!” - Tom Husband, Former Executive Director, Maricopa County Republican Committee

·        Editor’s Note:  Contrary To The Rumor Mill, Husband resigned his MCRC position,  following the AZGOP Jan 25 passage of the Censure McCain Resolution,  to take the Chairmanship of the Arizona Taxpayers Action Committee “informing Republicans about the turncoats that voted with Dems and approved the Medicaid Expansion that will cost taxpayers tons of money,” according to Husband. Husband had planned to resign at the end of the 2013, however, he stayed through the county and state conventions before moving on to his new endeavor.

·       Thank You To The Many Volunteers Who Helped With The State Republican meeting last Saturday. I know you not only sacrificed your time, but you also gave up the opportunity to visit with statewide friends. A special Thank You to Dan Grimm, Jeni White, Pat Oldroyd, George Teegarden, Mickie Niland, Kerri Costanza and Laddie Shane for helping to "Chair" credentials, proxies, set-up, and voting assistance. Thanks again for sharing your talents and time.  - Diane Ortiz-Parsons,  volunteer trouble shooter, state committeeman, former MCRC EGC member

·       Random Thoughts/Observations From The State Meeting: (Observing people is half the fun of going to a state meeting.)

ü  State GOP Chairman Robert Graham owes Diane Ortiz-Parsons and her experienced, knowledgeable, hardworking Maricopa County Republican meeting crew (the above mentioned volunteers and many others) -  a huge ‘thank you’ for pulling off what appeared to be a smoothly operated state meeting last Saturday.

ü  Volunteers are the driving force that prepares and holds those meeting together.  They are the experienced detail-wise folks behind the scenes who know the law/rules, where to find more volunteers, who the team players are, who work until they drop and are there again at dawn the next morning, and they also reach out to other team players who make a meeting a success. They are the ones who graciously pick up the pieces, catch the mishaps, cover the officials back sides when they drop the ball, stuff the packets, and clean up the mess at the end of the day.

ü   Briefs won’t even begin to go into the reports of troubleshooting that Parsons and her troops dealt with when they went to bat while Graham was traveling out of state.  When the event was over the team looked exhausted. A detailed debriefing should prevent repeat of major mishaps – like not including the meeting rules in the call letter .

ü  Graham quickly handled an incident that occurred behind the scenes Saturday morning.  More than twice the required signatures had been gathered to put a resolution on the floor, but as the clock crept toward the submission deadline the official the signatures were to be submitted to seemingly disappeared … until Graham directed that the official be found immediately.

ü  The HQ staff did get the Call Letters sent out 10 days prior to the meeting, although many state committeemen did not receive them until a day or so before the meeting. HQ has the receipt to prove it.

ü  Gotta hand it to Graham, he is a smooth talking charmer, who handled the meeting well and kept to his agenda timelines. A look at the financial sheets shows he clearly knows how to glad-hand big money folks and shake the money tree… which stirs rumors that he might have his eye on a future run for the Gov office or a congressional seat.  Time will tell.

ü  He reports a sell-out crowd attended the Chairman’s banquet held the night before -  where  all of the gubernatorial candidates spoke.

ü  Thanks to David Schweikert for setting up his coffee stand outside early Saturday:

ü  To the folks who man the campaign tables in the cold of the early morning.

ü  To the TARS who were selling sandwiches during the lunch break.

ü  To the color guard that performed to perfection.

ü  To Rev. C.T. Wright and his rip roarin’ invocation.  Minds don’t drift during his moments at the mic… the ever popular Wright shakes the rafters with his deliverance.

ü  To the four congressmen who were extremely warmly received during their short presentations… and thanks guys for staying within your time limitation.  Congressmen Matt Salmon, Trent Franks, Paul Gosar and David Schweikert (and his ever present coffee cup in hand) delivered messages of assurances that they are doing everything they possibly can to take back this country from the errant, left-leaning, muddle-headed Obama administration and its minions. We need more like our quartet in DC.

ü  Sheriff Joe received his usual standing ovations – coming and going… although some didn’t take kindly to Joe publicly endorsing an official up for re-election that day during his mic time.

ü  More tomorrow ---

·       Today, Congressman Matt Salmon Introduced His Newest Education-Focused Legislation, the School Choice Education Savings Account Act. Salmon said:   “Last night in the State of the Union address, President Obama said, “Research shows that one of the best investments we can make in a child’s life is high-quality early education.” One of the ways we can truly invest in our children’s education is to provide parents with more flexibility, including the expansion of tax savings accounts for their children’s education from kindergarten through college. As a Member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, I take to heart President Reagan’s invaluable words about school choice. He said, “Choice represents a return to some of our most basic notions about education.  In particular, programs emphasizing choice reflect the simple truth that the keys to educational success are schools and teachers that teach, and parents who insist that their children learn.” In honor of School Choice Week, I introduced legislation that will offer parents the ability to use 529 tax savings accounts for qualified K-12 expenses as well as college expenses.  By offering this flexibility to parents, they can save and invest in their students’ whole education from kindergarten through college.  This will provide parents more choices of schools, supplemental educational opportunities and necessary equipment for their children. When parents are given greater flexibility in school choice, children win.”

Background: Currently, the majority of states provide tax incentives for contributions into 529 college savings plans.  The federal government allows similar incentives for educational savings for both K-12 and postsecondary education through the Coverdell ESA program.  The Coverdell program, however limits the amount one can contribute annually as well as the age one can make qualified expenditures.  My bill expands the language in IRC Section 529 to include K-12 qualified educational expenses, which effectively removes such limitations. This legislation offers parents the same tax savings for K-12 expenses that are available for college.  Read the bill here.

·       Kathy Brugger, President Of The National Federation Of Republican Women (NFRW), regarding President Barack Obama's State of the Union address: "In his State of the Union address last night President Obama set the stage for an imperial presidency, alluding several times to taking action by executive order when Congress does not pass the laws that he is satisfied with. A resort to executive orders to propel his liberal agenda demonstrates how desperate the President is to codify his legacy by any means necessary.

The President alluded directly and indirectly to implementing projects in his 'year of action' by executive orders nine times during his State of the Union address last night. He plans to circumvent Congress by executive order when it comes to handling the permitting process for infrastructure progress, propelling the natural gas industry, reforming training programs, implementing nation-wide pre-K, raising the minimum wage for federal contractors, creating a new system for retirement savings, and action on gun control measures. As Republicans we believe that if the changes above are going to be made, they need to be made with proper debate and passage in Congress--not by executive power alone.

The President's speech tonight serves as a reminder to Republican activists that this year's midterm elections are vitally important and that we need to work hard to make Republican gains in Congress."

·       Robert Graham, Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party, today reacted to a statement made yesterday by a Democrat running for Governor who purports to solve the problem of political corruption by banning even the smallest of gifts to lawmakers. Apparently the Democrat candidate feels the source of the problem is not with his own choice long ago to become a career lobbyist, but with other lobbyists who made the same choice. “I had a hard time keeping a straight face when a lobbyist decides to run for office and then suddenly blames other lobbyists for influencing legislators," said Arizona Republican Party Chairman Robert Graham. “This is one guy that just keeps filling the room with irony — it’s just much too convenient for him to now take a position against what he’s been doing his entire career — and voters deserve to hear the truth about his past.” DuVal began his lobbying career in Arizona in 1980. His most recent corporate lobbying clients include the Arizona Board of Regents, the Cactus League Coalition, Decades Music Theme Park, DMTP Pinal Holdings, LLC, Laidlaw Waste Systems, and Painewebber.

Hank Habicht, former Deputy Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, at the ribbon cutting of RDX Technologies Corporation’s new 80,000 square foot manufacturing facility, 14555 N. 82nd St, in Scottsdale  at 2 pm, Jan 31 at, AZ, Friday on January 31st at 2pm. “RDX is using waste water to produce renewable fuels used by machinery and vehicles across the world. Not only are they revolutionizing how we see energy, but they are doing so without subsidies from the federal government," said Schweikert.”This company demonstrates the very best of what entrepreneurship can create. They are reducing the waste stream and reusing facilities that would otherwise be vacant while creating local jobs, providing employment and helping to grow our  local economy.”This move continues RDX expansion from its previous facility in Scottsdale Airpark.  In addition to the 82nd Street facility, it operates a smaller second facility, also in Scottsdale. ·       Majority Leader David Gowan, R-Sierra Vista, is sponsoring a bill that would reimburse communities that host national events, like a Super Bowl football game, a portion of the extra security expenses associated directly with the event. “The entire state benefits from these kinds of events,” Gowan said. “And public safety works best when everyone chips in.”

Gowan added that since hosting Super Bowl XVII in 2008, Arizona’s reputation as a suitable venue for national and international events has grown. The average stay for a visitor when Arizona hosted Super Bowll XLII in 2008 was close to four nights, according to a study by the ASU W.P. Carey School of Business. The overall economic impact, both direct and indirect, was over half a billion dollars. “We are privilege to live in such a great state,” Gowan said. “And this effort to help communities provide for the extra security required at these high profile events is about keeping Arizona’s reputation solid.”  Contact: Christopher Leone   602-926-3233

·        Amnesty - Suicide For Republican Party  …John McCain, the loudest advocate of amnesty in 2006 and 2007, got only 31% of the Hispanic vote when he ran for president in 2008. Any amnesty plan, no matter how it is dressed up, is a formula for more Democratic votes and big-government, big-spending policies   … It’s time for the grassroots to take control of the Republican Party away from the elitists who want to choose our candidates, tell them what to say, and how to vote. Next time, we want a real choice, not an Establishment echo. – Phyllis Schlafly
