·       Gov Jan Brewer - Flags Lowered In Memory Of Phoenix Police Detective John Hobbs:   “It was with shock and sorrow that I learned of the murder of an honorable Phoenix Police Detective, John Hobbs. A fugitive-apprehension officer and 21-year veteran of the department, Detective Hobbs was the victim of a senseless shooting while on duty Monday afternoon in Phoenix. Detective Hobbs dedicated his life to protecting the community and making it a better place for all to live. It is a stark and saddening reminder that, for our men and women in law enforcement, no day on the job is ever without danger. His memory and noble service will forever be remembered and cherished by the eternally grateful state of Arizona. Please say a prayer for Detective Hobbs, his family and his fellow brothers and sisters in law enforcement as we mourn this unthinkable tragedy. Please also continue to pray for the recovery of Detective Hobbs’ fellow officer, who was critically injured in the shooting. In honor and recognition of one of Arizona’s finest, Detective John Hobbs, I have requested that all state flags be lowered to half-staff until sunset today and on the day of his interment, for which services are pending.”

·       Rep. Sonny Borrelli Is Sponsoring Legislation that seeks to close two major watercraft safety loopholes that exist under current state law. House Bill 2003 states that watercraft operators who refuse tests for alcohol or drugs would face civil penalties totaling $1,250, and a collision or accident that results only in damage to the property of another would be a Class 3 misdemeanor. Under current state law, suspected drunken operators who refuse to submit to tests of their breath, blood, urine or other bodily substances do not face any penalty, and a warrant must be obtained to take samples. By the time a warrant is obtained, the blood alcohol level necessary to prosecute may have disappeared. HB 2003 would also make it easier for authorities to charge boaters with aggravated operating under the influence if a passenger aboard is 15 years of age or younger. But, Rep. Borrelli still assures boaters that they won’t be required to have identification to go boating. You’re not required to have insurance on the water, or a driver’s license, and that’s not going to change. HB 2003 has passed out of the Committee on Public Safety, Military & Regulatory Affairs and the Committee on Judiciary. Borrelli’s legislation passed out of the House Committee of the Whole on March 3, 2014. After a Third Read the legislation will head to the Senate.

·       The U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service has announced the final designation of approximately 764, 207 acres of critical habitat for the jaguar (Panthera onca) - found within Pima, Santa Cruz and Cochise counties in Arizona, and Hidalgo County in New Mexico -  under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The final rule takes effect on April 4, 2014. The final rule reflects the following changes from the July 1, 2013, critical habitat proposal: Exclusion of Tohono O’odham Nation lands (78,067 acres) as a result of the Tribe’s efforts—working in partnership with the Service—to conserve jaguar and other listed species' habitat on the Nation's sovereign land. Exemption of Fort Huachuca lands (15,867 acres) due to the conservation benefits to the jaguar provided in Fort Huachuca’s approved Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan. To view the final rule, comments and materials received, as well as some supporting documentation, visit and All comments, materials and documentation that were considered in this rulemaking are available, by appointment, at: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Arizona Ecological Services Fish and Wildlife Office, 2321 West Royal Palm Drive, Suite 103, Phoenix, AZ 85021; phone (602) 242‒0210.

·       Congressman Matt Salmon On The President’s Newly Released FY 2015 Budget Proposal: “With over $700 billion in new spending and not even a suggestion of cooperation with House Republicans, it is disappointing that the President would choose to use his budget as a platform for his liberal agenda rather than an opportunity to work across the aisle for real change that will help put our federal budget on a sustainable path. I am disappointed that this $3.9 trillion budget proposal raises taxes, creates new government programs, makes indiscriminate cuts to the size and pay of the military at a time when our country faces increasing global uncertainty and instability, and fails to incorporate even modest reforms to our looming entitlement crisis. What is most disheartening is the fact that despite his proposed tax increase, the President’s budget never balances – ever. In 2006, then-Senator Obama said, “America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.” Americans DO deserve better budgets from Washington, not 9 percent increases in federal spending paid on the backs of hardworking citizens and ultimately add to our debt.House Republicans are willing to work for solutions to the big spending problems facing our nation, such as entitlement reforms, reducing our national debt, and responsibly cutting spending to tackle the deficit. If he is serious about truly addressing these looming issues, the President should work with Congress to find a way to balance the budget and implement real solutions to our nation’s challenges.”

During my time in Congress, I have represented Arizona's 5th Congressional District by voting to help eliminate this wasteful government spending and reduce our debt, and I will continue to do so. Will Kyrsten Sinema Abandon Her Competitive District?  Open Seat in Heavily Democratic District Tempts Sinema to Switch:   Faced with significant competition from Republicans in Congressional District 9, Democrat Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema is considering abandoning her district in favor of one with an electorate that leans heavily Democrat, Arizona's Congressional District 7. An email leaked from Sinema’s inner circle reveals she planned a special meeting last week to discuss her “options.”  The email was sent only eight hours after Congressman Ed Pastor announced his retirement.  The meeting likely included discussion about abandoning her current district where her chances for reelection are in doubt, and possibly switching to the safer seat.

"We’re not surprised Sinema would abandon her current constituents for a cushy district that would help feed her ambition to be a career politician,” said Arizona Republican Party Chairman Robert Graham.  “Voters are tired of people like her that serve themselves rather than those who elected them.”

Faced with the prospects in her current competitive district, Sinema morphed her radical progressive roots into a more moderate rhetoric to suit her ambitions.  But as one of the architects of Obamacare, which has proven to be highly unpopular and a real threat to the reelection of Democrats nationally, Sinema has been unable to shirk her responsibility for millions who have lost their health plans. “There’s a national backlash against Obamacare and the Democrats who supported it, and Sinema is no exception — she’s going to be held accountable by voters unless she manages to escape into a lopsided district,” Graham added.   (602) 957-7770  |  |
