·       Gubernatorial Candidate Frank Riggs: "I'm very disappointed that Gov. Brewer vetoed HB 2316, legislation designed to protect local control and decision-making in K-12 education.  I commend Rep Justin Pierce and Tom Forese for sponsoring the legislation and the State Legislature for passing the bill. Gov. Brewer's veto represents a decision on her part, and the monied interests backing Common Core How else to explain the opposition to legislation which simply says that Arizona state government "shall not adopt any educational standards, curricula or instructional approaches that may be mandated by the federal government"?  Furthermore, this legislation was prospective, not retroactive, and would not have repealed Arizona's participation in Common Core. Anyone who claims that Common Core is not federally mandated is being disingenuous.  Arizona was required to adopt Common Core in exchange for a small amount of federal grant funding (a fraction of total K-12 education funding in Arizona), and a waiver of burdensome federal education regulations.  For these crumbs - we have surrendered state sovereignty and abdicated our responsibility for determining the appropriate educational standards and assessments for our kids.
I'll exercise my executive authority to "repeal" Arizona's participation in Common Core (by withdrawing Arizona from the MOU with the U.S. Department of Education) and then convene a statewide education accountability summit to hear from Arizonans.  We will stop Common Core on Day One, including the collection of longitudinal data on students, and save taxpayers the estimated $387 million to implement Common Core. And I will bring back local control over standards and assessments while protecting parental school choice and charter school autonomy."

·       Tempe City Council Candidate Matt Papke: Having your personal property stolen is horrible. It can leave a feeling of distrust, violation and a sense of hopelessness. Tempe the highest crime rates for both property and violent crimes in the East Valley. This is not acceptable. Last year we experienced a rash of bike thefts at our condo complex in Tempe. One to three bikes were being stolen from the existing bike racks every week. This was unacceptable. After contacting the Police Department a Tempe Police Department Crime Prevention Officer met with me and helped Identify a few changes we could make to reduce crime. After these changes were made our bike theft went from upwards of 5 a month to 1 or less a month. While I appreciate the knowledge and guidance the Officer offered I was perplexed why in my five previous years as a board member we were never contacted by the Tempe Police Department Crime Prevention Unit. I thought of all the crime we could have prevented, and the hardships of students having their only mode of transportation taken from them. It is equally perplexing if not appalling that while Tempe has been cited as the 8th most dangerous suburb in America the same institution has appointed Chandler and Scottsdale, both bordering cities of Tempe, as two of the top ten safest cities in America. Tempe is our town it is time to reclaim it from criminals. As Councilman Papke I would work with the Tempe Police Department to further engage and integrate crime prevention tactics into our communities.

·       CD9 Candidate Wendy Rogers, a U.S. Air Force Lt. Col (ret), continues to call for answers and accountability in the VA scandal which cost the lives of at least 40 brave men and women. “At least 40 men and women, who fought bravely for our country, died not on the battlefield, but right here in Arizona while waiting for months on a ‘secret list’ for medical care, a list which was implemented by Phoenix VA officials to cover up massive backlogs.  As the director of the Phoenix VA system, Sharon Helman is ultimately responsible for these actions, and I believe she should immediately resign,” said Rogers. “I am absolutely outraged by how the VA treated Arizona’s heroes.  This should never have happened.  Had VA bureaucrats been more dedicated to their mission – to care for veterans who have given so much to our country – than by looking good on paper, these 40 men and women might still be alive.  Sharon Helman and the other bureaucrats responsible for this policy must be held accountable for this tragedy,” continued Rogers.  “It is appalling that Kyrsten Sinema has not yet called for a housecleaning at the VA.  This problem cannot be fixed until those responsible are immediately relieved of command and replaced by mission-first caregivers who have a dedicated themselves to providing care to veterans.”
