·       Gov Jan Brewer: In coordination with the 63rd annual National Day of Prayer, Governor Jan Brewer today proclaimed May 1, 2014 as ‘Arizona Day of Prayer.’    “Uniting in voluntary prayer is a custom and freedom as old as our state and nation. I am proud to recognize its power and importance by continuing the annual tradition of the “Arizona Day of Prayer,” said Brewer. “Like millions across this great country, prayer has guided me personally and professionally. Today, Americans of all faiths, backgrounds and political persuasions lift up through prayer our nation and its leaders, and ask for wisdom, courage and guidance. I invite my fellow Arizonans to join me in reflecting on our countless blessings, and to recognize the fundamental rights that allow us this opportunity. It is a freedom we should never take for granted.” The first national call to prayer was issued in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation. In 1952, President Harry S. Truman signed legislation proclaiming that a National Day of Prayer must be declared by each subsequent president on an appropriate date of his choice. Today, our country celebrates this occasion on the first Thursday of each May.

·       Arizona Governor Jan Brewer Signed House Bill 2078 into law Wednesday, making Arizona the 32nd state in the United States to have cost-parity for oral anticancer drugs. Beginning January 1, 2016, HB2078, sponsored by Rep Heather Carter (LD15), requires health insurance companies with plans that cover intravenous (IV) anticancer treatments and oral anticancer treatments to not discriminate against oral treatments by way of higher co-payments, deductibles or coinsurance. “With the passage and signing of HB2078, I’m very pleased that our elected officials did the right thing to stand up and represent all cancer patients,” said Carter. “By requiring insurance plans that already cover cancer treatments to treat all cancer drugs equally, it is now up to patients working with their doctors to decide what is the best available course of treatment for their condition. This also opens up a world of affordable options for rural cancer patients who don’t live near a treatment center.”

Jim Brewer, executive director of the Arizona Chapter of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, said,  “We did not have one single vote against this bill throughout the entire process, which is proof of this broad support and recognition of how important this issue is to Arizona cancer patients.” Other legislators that were key players in the passage of HB2078 are: Sen. ·       Attorney General Tom Horne Warns Arizona Consumers, particularly students, to be wary of telephone solicitors who offer to send thousands of dollars of grant money if the consumer pays a couple hundred dollars through a money card. Green Dot cards are a popular method through which scammers now conduct business as they are as good as cash and cannot be traced. These reloadable debit cards are available at numerous locations and can be used much like a debit card. In this most recent scam, consumers are told that they will receive a grant worth thousands of dollars. They are instructed to load a lesser amount onto a Green Dot card. The scammer then either picks up from the consumer’s home or instructs them to read the number on the card over the phone. Once the scammer has the card number, they have access to the funds.  Unfortunately, consumers learn too late that they are not recipients of  grant monies. The federal government, which administers grants through “” has set up a hotline for victims of this “Green Dot Scam.” Consumers who have lost money can call 1-800-447-8477 or
