May 28, 2014

·       MCRC Chairman A J LaFaro: Now that the 5 pm, May 28 Maricopa County Elections deadline for individuals to submit their PC Affidavit and Signature Petition Form(s) has passed, Elections will remove the PC Affidavit and Signature Petition Form from the link below and will add the PC Affidavit for Write-Ins.  Individuals who want to be PC write-ins will need to complete the PC Affidavit for Write-Ins and submit it to Elections between May 29th and June 11th.  It's also my understanding, Elections hopes to have the first database of individuals who submitted PC Affidavits and Signature Petition Forms(s) by 5 pm, May 28 posted by early next week. My deepest thanks to Kristi, Berta and the entire Maricopa County Elections Team for all of their hard work - especially during elections season. – A J LaFaro

·       My Deepest Thanks To All The PCs And Volunteers who worked so hard to get their Republican candidates on the Primary Ballot.  Here is the link to all the Arizona candidates that filed with the AZSOS: .  Early Ballots Go Out In 63 Days.     -  A.J. Lafaro- Chairman, Maricopa County Republican Committee.

·       Gov Jan Brewer Ordered Flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Thurs, May 29 in honor of Border Patrol Agent Alexander Giannini. The governor has ordered that flags also be lowered on the day of his interment, for which services are pending. Agent Giannini, of the Willcox Station, was killed Wed, May 28, in an on-duty single vehicle accident near Benson. He had served with the U.S. Border Patrol since 2009. Individuals, businesses and other organizations are encouraged to participate in this tribute.

·       Visitation for former Senator Tom Smith is scheduled from 6-8 pm, Thur., May 29 at Messingers, Indian School and Miller Road. Services are planned at 10 am, Fri., May 30 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help on Miller Road – reception follows. Burial will be private. . Smith, who passed away this weekend, was a LD28 precinct committeeman. He was formerly from the old LD26 Kaibab precinct (east Phoenix and Paradise Valley). He was a Colonel in the Marines, former Scottsdale School District principal, and a longtime party activist promoting “honesty and integrity”.  Smith was the legislator behind the establishment of the “AZ Governor’s Study Committee on Firearms Safety and Sport Shooting Ranges” Est October 2000, that resulted in the ARS in Title 17 that provided protection to shooting ranges. He was a champion of shooting and of the Ben Avery Shooting Facility , operated by the Arizona Game and Fish Dept on the north side of the Carefree Highway/I-17. If it weren’t for his efforts, things would be a lot different in AZ now with the future of shooting ranges, according to a retired AZGF officer.  His passing is a great loss to the Arizona firearms owners and the Republican Party.

·       For The Next Few Weeks, Travelers On I-10 just west of the I-17 interchange, one of the most heavily traveled areas in Arizona, will see AzCDL’s logo, website address and “Protecting Your Freedom” in gigantic lettering.  In addition to bringing AzCDL to the attention of hundreds of thousands of potential new members, imagine the reaction of those anti-rights zealots who want to disarm you. These alerts are a project of the Arizona Citizens Defense League (AzCDL), an all-volunteer, non-profit, non-partisan grassroots organization.

·       Secretary Of State Candidate Wil Cardon: “Yesterday we turned in over 12,000 nominating petition signatures from all across the state to gain a place on the ballot for secretary of state. More Arizonans signed our petition for secretary of state than any other candidate in this race. Our campaign is gaining momentum as the race heats up in advance of the primary election. I want to thank each and every one of you that took some time out of your busy schedule to sign our petition online or helped to gather signatures. Patriotism is exemplified by those that walk their neighborhood, call voters, sign a petition, and vote. As campaign season kicks into high gear, I’ll be traveling to every corner of Arizona to propose something radical; that we should elect somebody to this office who hasn’t spent their entire life running for office. I’ll take the skills that I’ve learned from running a business in Arizona; hard work, efficiency, and common-sense budgeting; and apply them to the challenges presented at the Secretary of State’s office. Our Founders knew that expertise in governing comes from people in all walks of life and that public.

·       Congressman Matt Salmon:  I have filed for re-election at the Secretary of State's office. Thank you to the over 5,500 constituents who signed my petition to get me on the ballot. Serving Arizona's 5th district has been one of the highest honors of my life, and I am excited to officially begin my re-election campaign.

·       Gubernatorial Candidate Frank Riggs: “Yesterday, our campaign filed more than 10,700 signatures to qualify for the Arizona gubernatorial ballot. No other candidate collected as many signatures in such a short period of time. I’m writing today to say ‘thank you’ to all of our grassroots volunteers and supporters around the state who made this possible!”

·       Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio:  “The economic investment group ProMexico and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM, could both land new offices and centers in downtown Phoenix. A strong focus on improving our exports to Mexico and foreign direct investment back into the Phoenix market is critical for diversified economy,” DiCiccio said.  Phoenix Business Journal, May 21, 2014.Building and Diversifying our Economy-Big Ideas moving forward:

·       Open a trade office in Mexico City-combine efforts with the state of Arizona

·       Work with the largest university in Mexico to open in Downtown Phoenix

·       Work with the economic development arm of Mexico to open an office in Phoenix

·       Encourage foreign direct investment into our local economy

·       Strengthen our exports to our largest trading partner-Mexico

·       Rep. David Schweikert will be joining the House Small Business Committee hearing “Will EPA’s Waters of the U.S. Rule Drown Small Businesses?” The hearing is to be held Thurs, May 29 at 1 pm, in Room 2360, Rayburn. The hearing will be web-streamed live, HERE.  More information here.  On March 25, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a proposed rule that would assert Clean Water Act jurisdiction over nearly all areas with any hydrologic connection to downstream navigable waters, including man-made conveyances such as ditches. In early May, Schweikert joined House colleagues in a letter to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy and Department of the Army Secretary John McHugh for the proposed draft rule defining ‘waters of the US’ to be withdrawn and returned for further analysis and revision. The full letter can be read here. CONTACT: Maggie Zehring, (480) 946-2411.

·       CD Candidate Clair Van Steenwyk: “I've listened to Senators McCain & Flake and others in DC blame everyone they can think of except themselves, I believe those we elect to serve in DC also have Committees on Veterans Issues and as stated by McCain he talked about better care of Vets in his Presidential bid in 08 so he knew there were problems even then.  I'd really like to know why these Elected Officials Campaign on Issues and once it's over as history has proven Win or Lose the Issues on the Campaign trail are forgotten and we and the Vets get more of the same which is Nothing, Hold All Incumbents Responsible Now.”

·       CD9 Candidate Wendy Rogers:  “This morning our campaign turned in over 1,659 signatures to place my name officially on the ballot to be your next congresswoman of Arizona’s 9th district. So far, this has been a BIG day for our campaign, and with your help, we can make it even better! We’re just $11,315 short of our May online fundraising goal. Since day one, our campaign has focused on providing conservative solutions to get our nation back on the right track. Kyrsten Sinema and Barack Obama have shown us the wrong direction to take our nation -- and we’re not impressed. The people of the 9th district deserve better, and I’m ready to provide leadership that individuals and families across our local communities can rally behind. I proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and look forward to serving again in the U.S. House of Representatives.
I need your help to make this happen. Today, we celebrated an important milestone. Now, we must keep building momentum.”

·       CD2 Candidate Martha McSally reiterated her call for General Shinseki to resign or be fired in response to the latest report released by the VA Inspector General. Tucson-Following Senator McCain and Flake demand for General Shinseki to resign immediately due to the VA scandal, which started at an Arizona facility, Martha McSally states "With growing bipartisan outcry following the outrageous VA scandal and troubling findings in the inspector general's report, I stand with Senators McCain and Flake in reaffirming the call I made last week for General Shinseki to resign or be fired immediately. Southern Arizona is home to one of the largest veteran communities in the country. I call upon Congressman Barber to join Senator McCain, Senator Flake, myself and many in his own party in calling for General Shinseki to resign immediately or be fired. Unfortunately, Congressman Barber remains unwilling to join in that bipartisan chorus after overwhelming evidence of the VA's incompetence was recently released in the IG report. The charges in the report are downright criminal and should be investigated as such."

·        Gubernatorial Candidate Mayor Scott Smith today called on President Barack Obama to appoint new leadership atop the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, saying that "the present VA leadership has lost all trust and credibility when it comes to taking care of America's wounded soldiers."  Smith, the recent past president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, called the VA Office of the Inspector General's report on wrongdoing in Phoenix, released this morning, "the last straw - and absolutely unconscionable treatment of America's veterans. The administrative regime put in place by the Obama Administration, including Secretary Eric Shinseki, has lost the trust and confidence of veterans and the American public. It's unacceptable to see this Administration first deny that this scandal existed, and only now - a full eight weeks after a Congressional hearing broke this news to the world - begin to take seriously its investigation into how wounded soldiers in need of care have been neglected by the VA system. We need new leadership from the top down, because clearly we have a broken organization - one that has broken faith with the soldiers in their care. This issue is far too serious for the Administration to delay. The report released today shows 1,700 veterans in need of care who never made it on to the VA's waiting list in Phoenix. We cannot condone such neglect."
