·       Rep. David Schweikert in response to Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric Shinseki's resignation announcement: "I hope this resignation is a result of the President's dedication to finding the truth about the state of our VA system. Our Veterans and the VA need a Secretary that will take immediate action to reform the broken system. I look forward to working with the next Secretary, whomever that may be, to ensure our veterans are receiving timely and proper care.” In early April, a Veterans Affairs Inspector General report detailed medical care failures and administrative misconduct at numerous VA facilities.  A recent interim report details a system-wide pattern of scheduling manipulation of veterans' appointment times. Schweikert wrote a letter to Shinseki, following the initial reports, calling on Shinseki and the PVAHC leadership to resign. Recent responses to the ongoing investigation and the VA IG's report can be found here.

·       CD8 Candidate Clair Van Steenwyk: “I've listened to Senators McCain & Flake and others in DC blame everyone they can think of except themselves, I believe those we elect to serve in DC also have Committees on Veterans Issues and as stated by McCain he talked about better care of Vets in his Presidential bid in 08 so he knew there were problems even then.  I'd really like to know why these Elected Officials Campaign on Issues and once it's over as history has proven Win or Lose the Issues on the Campaign trail are forgotten and we and the Vets get more of the same which is Nothing, Hold All Incumbents Responsible Now.

·       Gubernatorial Candidate Frank Riggs: Despite the 75% increase in congressional funding for veterans health care over the six-year tenure of General Shinseki, the system has continued to struggle with extensive wait times at VA hospitals and health clinics, and a long-standing backlog of disability claims.  Veterans have literally died from long waits for basic, necessary tests and essential treatment. It's clear that Gen. Shinseki had to resign as VA Secretary, despite his distinguished military career, after the interim report this week by the VA's inspector general asserting that "inappropriate scheduling practices" are "a systemic problem nationwide."  The report found that 1,700 vets in Phoenix were victims of apparently rigged lists that concealed their wait times for appointments at the VA Hospital.  In examining the cases of 226 vets, the VA Inspector General found that the actual wait was 115 days even though the VA claimed they waited an average of 24 days for their first primary care appointment. The VA health care system is broken.  Routine VA health care should be contracted to private providers so that existing VA facilities can be used for urgent care and acute care, and the VA bureaucracy dismantled. I'm proud of my volunteer, active-duty service in the U.S. Army.  Unlike a couple of my opponents, who never put on the uniform of our country or served a day in the military -- one of whom tweeted today that the VA is for "wounded soldiers," thus showing his ignorance -- I'm not seizing on this issue because it's politically opportunistic.  I will always be a proud veteran and I will always look out and care for my fellow veterans under the Soldier's Creed of "no man left behind."

·       CD2 Candidate Chuck  Wooten: The Wooten For Congress campaign has taken an active role in tracking, educating our citizens and taking action with a dedicated group of patriots from multiple military branches to save the A-10 from the DoD’s proposed mothballing of the entire fleet. The effort has met initial success in both the House and Senate Armed Services Committees, however, we recognized that to continue funding for this unique aircraft, the legislative battle would be complex and lengthy.  In recent town hall meetings hosted by us, we admonished our audiences to not grow complacent as the road ahead to keep the A-10 in service was going to be a rough one.  We urged everyone to continue to call their representatives and to not “take their eye off the ball.”  Yesterday, we watched as the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee drafted legislation that did not include continued funding for the A-10.  We warned of this happening and were hopeful in our contact with both Congressman Barber’s office as well as Senator McCain’s office that they would remain vigilant in making sure that the measure would be “hand massaged” through the legislative gauntlet. Despite our best effort to that end, we are deeply disappointed the vigilance we called for was not heeded.  It appears Congressman Barber was caught off guard.  As the representative for CD2, that should have never happened.’’

·       Alan Korwin Alan@Gunlaws.Com: Today's Arizona Republic has an extensive front-page story about "gun control" -- without a single word of balance. How does that comport with editorial ethics? The very fact that a story about a single deranged murderer has been played nationwide for a week (the story's lead) is itself questionable journalism -- it is driving a solely anti-rights agenda. Where is the other side? That's rhetorical. There is none. This contributes greatly to the loss of credibility the media is suffering. Lives have been saved and crimes have been stopped all week long by firearms. Where is that coverage? The story is replete with errors. The so-called "background check bill," repeatedly mentioned, which repeatedly failed to pass, was actually a bill to register every gun owner in the country. No wonder the bill met such stiff resistance. Didn't the reporter, or anyone in the editorial chain read the bill? By repeating the bill's propaganda handle, instead of its content, you do a disservice to your readers, the nation and the profession. Everyone quoted expresses such befuddlement over why they are having such a hard time getting anything done, yet everything they are attempting focuses on rights denial, and none of it deals with crime suppression. They (and likely many of you) can't even see this. It's no wonder the public (not just the vilified NRA) strenuously objects. They ought to. The completely one-sided story exacerbates this problem. The real problem is hidden. The mea culpas are loud and fuzzy, the nation mourns endlessly, the real problem goes unaddressed, the side with answers is scorned, belittled and shunted from view, and the reporters keep asking what can we do. Wake up already. Let the other side speak as loudly as you (pejorative adjective goes here) are. - Alan Korwin – National recognized author and firearms expert.

·       CD2 Candidate Martha McSally response to Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric Shinseki's resignation. "This action is long overdue and another example of politicians only doing what's right when it's politically convenient. Over a week ago, I called for General Shinseki's resignation when reports revealed over forty of our veterans had died due to lack of care. This is only the first step of fixing the VA. The Administration still needs to take action immediately to start criminal investigations into those responsible, ensure veterans who have been waiting for care get that care in the days and weeks ahead, and start a long term assessment of what went wrong and how the VA is going to fix these problems so our Veterans never suffer like this again."  (520) 488-4610

·       CD1 Candidate Andy Tobin: In a statement released by Ann Kirkpatrick yesterday, she acknowledged that, “in the last eight years, there have been 18 Inspector General reports pointing to these systemic problems.” Kirkpatrick is Arizona’s only member of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs and is the Ranking Member of its Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. Tobin said, “General Shinseki’s resignation is a good first step to fixing our broken VA system, but it does not absolve President Obama, Ann Kirkpatrick or Washington politicians on both sides of the aisle from their responsibility to fix this mess. It’s time that we start asking tough questions of members of our House Veterans Affairs Committee. Ann Kirkpatrick acknowledges that the Office of the Inspector General has conducted 18 reports on the problems at the VA over the past eight years. When did she discover that the non-existent waiting lists were putting our veterans at risk? When was she planning on doing something about it? It is her duty as ranking member of the Veterans Affairs Oversight and Investigation Subcommittee to demand accountability and action at the first sign of trouble, not after our veterans have been tragically waiting for care that never came. It’s time for answers.” Contact: Campaign Manager Craig Handzlik at or 928-275-1417

·       CD9 candidate Wendy Rogers: Today, amid continuing revelations about the extensive care delivery problems in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system, including a “secret waiting list” at the Phoenix VA which cost 40 lives, VA Secretary Eric Shinseki finally agreed to step down.“Phoenix VA's problems are happening in facilities across America. Phoenix VA patients are waiting approximately 115 days to receive care, not 24 days as originally claimed.  All over the country, VA records are being falsified to appear care is being given in a timely manner, while wait times mount.  America does NOT leave men and women behind on the battlefield.” said Rogers. “Just yesterday, as veterans, my husband and I received Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema's hollow-promise congressional mailer saying she had "demanded . . . swift action to ensure the health and well-being of Arizona's veterans are protected and they [veterans] have timely access to the best possible care.' So why did it take four weeks for Congresswoman Sinema to call for Secretary Shinseki's resignation, if she's "Helping Military Veterans and Their Families" as her mailer title promised?  Answer: politics. In Secretary Shinseki’s own words, the actions underpinning this scandal demonstrate a ‘lack of integrity’ and are ‘indefensible.’  Civilian control of our military is a fundamental to our republic.  However, when politics trump respect for life, those politicians must be replaced by civilian leaders who understand sacrifice and leadership."
