8-21-14 MCRC Briefs

MCRC Briefs

Briefs Editor   Frosty Taylor

August 21, 2014

·       Early Voters Need Too Mail Their Ballots No Later Than Fri, Aug 22 to make sure they are in the Recorder’s office by 5 pm, Tues., Aug 26.  The sooner your ballot is in the Recorder’s office, the sooner your name is removed from those pesky robo calls lists. If you are getting as many a day as Briefs is, you probably agree that they are rapidly becoming a nuisance.

·       Mail In Ballots May Be Dropped Off At Any Polling Place in Maricopa County on election day, according to County Recorder Helen Purcell.

·       If You Have Questions About The “Mail-In Ballots Only Cities” see the 8-18-14 issue of the MCRC Briefs at  where the Maricopa County Elections Dept answers questions posed by MCRC Chairman A.J. LaFaro.

·       Although Briefs does not endorse, nor post candidate endorsements, prior to the primary, it is interesting to observe the reaction to former AZ Congressman J D Hayworth’s support letters this past week.  His influence definitely continues to be felt in Arizona.

·       As Political Mailers Pile Up The Desk every day, it is fascinating to watch which candidates are using destructive messages against fellow Republicans, while other candidates have the presence of mind to give voters positive reasons to vote for them.

·       The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors would like to thank county employees for their outstanding performance this week during the flooding across the Valley. The competence, coordination, professionalism, and sheer heroism were all on display. The efforts of public employees, first responders, emergency personnel, officials from the Flood Control District, MCDOT, Emergency Management, and the Sheriff’s Office resulted in no deaths or serious injuries in spite of the swift currents and hazardous conditions. See this daring rescue by MCSO Sergeant Wes Kuefer, Deputy Joe Scudella, and Pilot Mike White. –

·       Volunteers Are Needed For The Cloud And McQueen Precincts of LD17 walk this Saturday. Volunteers will meet at 9 am at the Walgreens parking lot on Riggs and McQueen Roads, 1055 E Riggs Rd Chandler, AZ85249.

·       CD2 candidate Chuck Wooten’s campaign camp will celebrate the Aug 26 elections starting at 7 pm, Tues., Aug 26 at the Williams Centre Condo Clubhouse, 5400 E Williams Blvd., Tucson.

·       Pinal Power Players will be live at 7:30 pm, Tues., Aug 26. Pinal Assessor and Players host Doug Wolf says he has been assured by Pinal Recorder Virginia Ross that they will be the first media outlet to report results for Pinal County races. Those races include Congressional District 1 which features a three way primary of Andy Tobin, Adam Kwasman and Gary Kiehne, LD11, LD8 which involves the incumbents TJ Shope and Frank Pratt versus two Tea Party challengers. Tune your computer to KQCKRADIO.COM

·       Gubernatorial Candidate Scott Smith and Gov Jan Brewer will be hosting campaign events throughout Tucson area on Fri., Aug 22. There will be media availability to ask campaign-related questions at all three events.

·       MCRC Chairman A.J. LaFaro reminds everyone, “the passage of Proposition 122 on November 4th is extremely important to help preserve Arizona's sovereignty and 10th Amendment rights.  Below is Russell Pearce's "Statement in Favor" that will appear in the November 4th Voter Information Pamphlet:

o   Yes!!!!  Proposition 122 To Appear On The 2014 Ballot Is A Critical State’s Rights Proposition: Delegates to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 feared an all-powerful federal government.  They had just fought a bloody war to free themselves from the tyranny of the English King, and they weren’t about to risk their precious freedom on far-away bureaucrats who might try to centralize power and take away their rights.  So, the Founders wrote a constitution that established a federal government with layers of checks and balances that would protect liberty and put chains on the power of the central government.  The federal government was prohibited from exercising any powers NOT delegated to it, and the powers that WERE delegated to it were few and enumerated.  Further, everyone understood that the powers held by the federal government were not powers that it assumed for itself but powers that were delegated to it by the states.  The states were to be a check on the abuse of power by the federal government – that is, the states were to be watchful and rein in the federal government whenever it began to usurp authority not delegated to it.  Little by little over the last two centuries, the federal government has assumed more and more power that rightfully belongs to the states, and the states have not performed their proper role of checking abuses by the federal government.  Onerous environmental regulations, control over education, using the IRS to target political opponents, mandating health care, writing laws via Executive orders, rewriting other laws passed by Congress, and bailing out private companies are just a few examples, and the list goes on and on.  It’s time to recognize that a federal law that violates the U.S. Constitution is not a law at all.  Prop 122 will strengthen Arizona’s effort to oppose federal violations of the Constitution.  Vote “YES” on Prop 122.  -  Senator Russell Pearce, Former President of the Arizona State Senate, Former Chief Deputy for America’s Toughest lawman, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, and Host of “The Russell Pearce Show” on KKNT-960 “The Patriot” in Phoenix

·       Pinal County Chairman Seraphim Larsen is calling for poll watchers. Volunteers should contact him at Seraphim Larsen immediately.

·       At the request of MCRC Chr A J LaFaro, the Maricopa County Elections Team has developed an Online Poll Watcher (aka Political Observer) Workshop that Poll Watcher volunteers can watch prior to the Aug 26 Primary and Nov 4 General Elections. Please read the instructions below before accessing the workshop:

o   1.  The workshop takes a couple of minutes to load so be patient

o   2.  Once loaded, the workshop automatically starts and advances by itself

o   3.  Do not try stopping the workshop.  You might get a "script error" and the workshop will freeze up

If you have any technical difficulties or questions contact Daniel Ruiz II, Director of Public Affairs, Maricopa County Recorder’s Office & Elections Department at 602-506-1270 or  Poll Watcher volunteers need to contact their LD Chairmen and request LaFaro's original signed letter of appointment.  LaFaro requires all Poll Watcher volunteers be current elected or appointed Republican Precinct Committeemen. politicalobserverworkshop.htm  LaFaro thanks Maricopa County Elections Team Members - Daniel Ruiz II, Berta Ramirez, Linda Weedon and Kristi Passarelli for taking the time to develop this workshop. And he thanks the MCRC volunteers who are working tirelessly during this election.

·       Candidate for State Treasurer Randy Pullen: Hugh Hallman has taken the ugly path of personal, deceitful attack ads on television, radio, mail pieces and now, aided by political consultant Nathan Sproul, political signs that are complete lies. In truth, these attacks by Mr. Hallman and Mr. Sproul are defamatory and subject them to further legal action. One such TV and radio ad stated that Randy Pullen as Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party in 2011, left the Party in debt $100,000.   In truth, as reported in filings with the Federal Election Commission, the Party had $86,000 in cash and approximately $17,000 in accounts payable.  After bringing this to the attention of the broadcast companies, Mr. Hallman was forced to take down the ad. Mr. Pullen commented, “My campaign will continue to focus on the experience and knowledge I bring to the job of as a CPA, and the tremendous support of many elected officials who trust me to serve Arizona as its next Treasurer. I have not and will not attack either of my opponents in the primary.

·        Gubernatorial Candidate Scott Smith: I just learned that a secretive campaign organization called the Arizona Free Enterprise Club has used pictures of our house in their newest despicable attack ad.  I’m sure you have been reading a lot about this mystery “dark money group” in the newspapers lately and their dishonest negative attacks on other good men and women. My home, like yours, is a place where our family should feel safe. It’s a place where we should have our privacy. It’s a place where my grandchildren should be able to play without fear of being watched or photographed. I don’t know why those who run the Arizona Free Enterprise Club would use pictures of our home in a TV ad filled with misleading half-truths and distortions.  It's hard enough to watch your husband attacked with lies, but downright scary when the ad also carries a very direct message: we know where you live! I am emailing you today to ask for your help in fighting against the detestable dishonest campaign ads and fear tactics used by organizations like the Arizona Free Enterprise Club and their leaders. We cannot let people like Free Enterprise Club head Scott Mussi and others willing to lie and cheat steal this election from us and from the voters of Arizona! We must respond and set the record straight about my husband’s successful record as a businessman and mayor. Mr. Mussi and the Free Enterprise Club plan to spend over $125,000 airing his lies and distortions on television. We must respond by raising $50,000 within the next 24 hours! donations Thank you for helping us fight back against people who would take pictures of our home in an attempt to gain some small political advantage. – Kim Smith

·       Attorney General Candidate Mark Brnovich: Tom Horne is a desperate man. Down in the polls, shunned by leading Arizona conservatives and on the outs with his constituents, he’ll do or say anything in order to cling to power. Case in point: Tom Horne’s latest campaign TV spot. After what must have been an exhaustive review of my credentials and background, the only issue my opponent could find is a $120 donation I made to a Democrat nearly a decade ago. In 2006 Democrat Pete Rios crossed party lines and supported conservatives in the fight for Arizona parents to be notified when their children sought abortions. My opponent’s desperate attempt to claim that I support Pete Rios’ position on border issues is a lie.  No one has fought harder to secure our border than Jan Brewer, and I feel the same way. Between now and Tuesday, I will continue working to earn from voters the sacred trust that Tom Horne has broken. As Attorney General, I am committed to restoring integrity in the office that Tom Horne has sullied.

·       Gubertnatorial Candidate Doug Ducey:  As we head into the final days of the campaign, I’m still so honored by the support we've built around the state. Nowhere was this more evident than last night in SaddleBrooke, near Tucson, where Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and state Sen. Al Melvin joined me for a town hall meeting.  We met with about 80 residents -- not all of whom had made up their mind -- and had a great discussion on issues like border security and areas of federal government overreach like Obamacare, Medicaid expansion and Common Core. I talked about my vision for the state and long-term goal of reducing the state's income tax, as well as my broad coalition of support. I'm thankful to have Sheriff Joe's on the campaign trail. If you have questions about where I stand on any position, take a look at my plan, The Roadmap to Opportunity and Freedom. It's less than a week until election day and we still need your help! If you have a few hours to spare, please email and we will be in touch!  Again, thank you for your support!
