MCRC Briefs

August 9, 2014

·       The MCRC Needs To Provide At Least 20 Unpaid Volunteers to officially observe the early ballot counting at Maricopa County Elections beginning on Tuesday, August 19, and potentially lasting through Friday, August 29th.  We need to have 2 volunteers observing at all times throughout the day. The early ballot counting will be conducted all day, every day at the Elections - MCTEC Office, 510 S. Third Ave., Phoenix AZ 85003, 602-506-1511. Please e-mail Chairman LaFaro your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address and the day(s) you are willing to work.  A J LaFaro – Maricopa County Republican Chairman

·       Reports Are Surfacing That An Out-Of-State PAC Is Attempting To Influence The LD23 precinct committeeman election that is listed on their Aug. 26 primary ballot. A flyer sent to LD23 GOP voters lists a group of PCs candidates to vote for – but it does not include current PCs John and April Riggins. Is this an attempt to oust April Riggins as a precinct Committeemen in the Aug 26 primary election to prevent her from running for chairmanship of the Maricopa County Republican Committee in January 2015?  Some think so. Riggins just happens to the First Vice-Chairman of the Maricopa County Republican Committee, which makes her the heir-apparent to become the Maricopa County Republican Chairman if Chairman A J LaFaro decides not to rerun for the position.  As you may recall, LaFaro was the chairman when Maricopa County PCs passed a resolution reprimanding Sen John McCain earlier this year. It’s no secret that McCainites want LaFaro gone -- along with the rest of his cabinet when the election for new officers rolls around in January 2015. Never mind that the well-liked Riggins is a long-time, hardworking Republican activist, who has done an outstanding job as a second VP.  About the only way, she can be prevented from moving up into the Chairman’s position is to make sure she isn’t re-elected at the precinct level in the Aug 26 primary- which would disqualifying her from running for the Chairmanship. ·       LD28 House Candidate Mary Hamway is most annoyed with an e-mail signed by Phoenix City Councilman Sal Di Ciccio and distributed by LD28 challenger Shawnna Bolick’s camp that carrys  a message that says “liberals and government unions” are supporting Hamway.  Hamway says, “ No unions have endorsed me, I have not received any money from unions, and to the best of knowledge I have never met any union representatives.”  open letter to DiCiccio

·       Congressman Matt Salmon: Bill to Allow Competency-Based Education Passes House - I was thrilled my bill to advance competency-based education, giving students credit for what they know and not how long they spent learning it, passed the House 414-0.  This sends a clear message on where we stand: College should be about acquiring skills and knowledge, not amassing time and debt.  In an era of ever more partisan politics, this is something on which everyone in Washington can agree.  The Senate and the President have already indicated their support, and it is my hope it will soon be signed into law.More on the bill is available here: salmon-bill-on-competency-based-education-passes-the-house

·       Congressman Matt Salmon: Veterans Assistance Bill Becomes Law -
In July, both the Senate and House passed legislation to take action on Veterans Administration problems and the President signed it into law.  This new law will enable veterans to seek assistance outside of the VA if they can’t access care in a timely fashion.  It also increases the Department of Veterans affairs budget to allow for the hiring of more doctors.  I’m thankful we were able to come together and get some relief to our veterans, address the culture of mismanagement, and take real steps toward getting the VA back on track

·       Congressman Paul A. Gosar:  After President Obama authorized continued airstrikes against ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) military forces in Iraq -  "The American people have a decreased desire for conflict as a result of lengthy and costly operations in the Middle East. But without these targeted airstrikes against ISIS, these savages will continue their horrendous and despicable acts against the Iraqi people which includes rape and mass genocide.Additionally, these strikes are necessary to protect U.S troops and facilities in the region. Our nation has spilled blood and treasure over the years to liberate the Iraqi people from oppression. It would be an insult to our soldiers and the Iraqi people alike if the U.S. stood by and did nothing and let this terrorist organization rule the region as they see fit. Let me be clear: the President's haphazard withdrawal from the region; in addition to his misguided, inconsistent and hypocritical foreign policy, has directly contributed to the situation we face today in Iraq. The region is becoming less stable by the day and ISIS poses a direct threat to our nation. The United States cannot and should not be responsible for solving all of the world's problems, but when we can act prudently and responsibly to save lives and further the global mission of undermining terrorism, we have an obligation to do so. For my part, I have consistently fought to reassure the American people that no tax dollars will go in any way, shape or form to support these groups--the most recent example being H.AMDT.944 to the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2015, which passed on a bipartisan vote.  Ultimately, my thoughts and prayers are with our soldiers and with the oppressed Iraqi people. My hope is that the Obama Administration works with Congress to construct a coherent foreign policy strategy to undermine ISIS, al Qaeda and other terrorist networks."

·       LD28 House Candidate Mary Hamway: Today, another misleading mailer full of falsehoods was sent to voters from a dark money group who won't tell you who's paying for it. Here are the facts while I was on the Town Council: (1) We cut spending by 30%. (2) We reduced staff. (3) We found ways to streamline government, making town government more efficient, effective and accountable. (4) We balanced the budget every year. I am proud of my record on the Town Council and the accomplishments we made to make Paradise Valley a better place.I hope you will continue to see through their lies and vote for me.

·       Gubernatorial Candidate Frank Riggs:  Response to recent anonymous attack - You won't find me or anyone associated with my campaign making anonymous attacks on my opponents; not directly, nor through a blog or "independent" group controlled by a political operative.  All these sleazy tactics do is fuel public disgust with politics and further erode public trust and participation in our representative democracy.I have a record I'm proud of.  Ducey, on the other hand, has never held legislative office or ever had to cast a single tough vote (as State Treasurer, he didn't utter a peep as the Governor and her allies were pushing through Common Core and Medicaid expansion under Obamacare).  My record includes serving my country and local community by enlisting in the Army and serving as a police officer and deputy sheriff, literally putting my life on the line.  I'm proud that I'm the only vet in the race and confident I can walk my talk when I say I'll make public safety and securing the border my top priority.  I'm also proud of the work I've done since leaving Congress to create more parental school choice and educational opportunity, by helping to finance and build hundreds of charter schools, most of them serving predominantly low-income student populations and communities.  I built that nonprofit corporation and Community Development Financial Institution from start-up status to a $125 million organization when I retired at the end of 2012.I cast thousands of votes as a member of Congress so it's relatively easy (and cowardly) to selectively parse my voting record.  "Anonymous" doesn't mention my A ratings (and endorsements) from National Right to Life and the NRA, nor my A grade from Numbers USA, two million members strong, for my votes to stop illegal immigration and opposing amnesty.  He also doesn't mention my "Taxpayer Hero" award from Citizens Against Government Waste and Watchdogs of the Treasury, nor my "Guardian of Small Business" award from NFIB.  I earned these awards based on my actual voting record in Congress.

·       LD28 House Candidate Mary Hamway: Creating job – I will focus on reducing burdensome regulations that hinder job growth, so we can foster job creation and continue building a healthy economy. Improving Education:  I support Governor Brewer’s higher education standards. I will support policies that focus on early childhood development, after-school programs. STEM, increasing the use of technology in classrooms and rewarding excelling teachers and schools. Securing Our Borders – I believe Governor Brewer was right to stand against President Obama, and I fully support her efforts to fight illegal immigration. I will work with fellow legislators to continue Governor Brewer’s border security efforts, improve security at ports of entry and expand the use of technology and E-Verify.  Making State Government More Efficient, Transparent and Accountable –I am fully committed to improving fiscal responsibility and accountability in state government. I will support policies that focus on streamlining and consolidating government processes, expanding the use of technology and lessening the grip state government has on resources and programs that local governments can manager better.  I have a proven track record of find solution so to complex problems in both the public and private sectors. I ask for your vote by early ballot or on Election Day.
