·        An Invitation Distributed Friday Afternoon  Reads “Congressional candidates Andy Tobin (CD1), Martha McSally (CD2) and Wendy Rogers (CD9) invite you to a reception with Speaker John Boehner” …at  5:30 pm,  Sat., Oct 18 at an undisclosed location in Paradise Valley, AZ.  Roundtable at 4:30 pm. Photo op at 5 pm. Tickets - $7,800 includes roundtable, photo op and reception. $2,600 – photo op and reception.  $500 – reception.  RSVP Jessica LaBerge at 602-633-2777 or labergejl@gmail.com or Michelle Hyde at Michelle@thehydeco.com  In wee print at the bottom: “Paid for by Arizona Congressional Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee authorized by and composed of Andy Tobin for Congress, McSally for Congress, Wendyrogers.org  and the National Republican Congressional Committee.  Arizona Congressional Victory Fund, PO Box 9891, Arlington, VA 22219.”  CD3 candidate Gabby Saucedo-Mercer is conspicuously absent from the invitation.  So, who left Gabby off the list? And why?? Establishment vs Grassroots? Inquiries resulted in the following responses:

o   CD3 MCRC Coordinator Andrew Costanzo: “I just received confirmation from Gabby.  Gabby was not asked or invited, she was left out again.”

o   MCRC Chairman A.J. LaFaro, “In the ‘paid for by’ section, it says Arizona Congressional Victory Fund out of Arlington VA. The MCRC wasn't aware of or involved in this reception event.  If we had been, we would have exhausted ourselves to have Gabby included.”

o    AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham: “I am not sure who did the invite or who made the decision to be included. Speaking for the AZ GOP we had no idea until Wendy shared information about the event at a Republican Women’s event in her district. I do not know who the chair is...it is not included on the invite.”

o   Arizona’s National Republican Committeewoman Sharon Geise: “I wasn't invited and know nothing about it.”

o   Arizona’s National Republican Committeeman Bruce Ash: Neither Sharon , Robert nor I have any connection to the NRCC. The NRCC is a completely different organization from the RNC. We are members of the RNC. The NRCC is run by GOP leadership in the US House (just as the NRSC is the sister organization in the US Senate ).

o   LaBerge and Hyde haven’t responded at post time.

·       Pinetop-Lakeside JP Honored  California Southern University has named Judge David Widmaier the recipient of the 2014 CalSouthern Difference Award. ·       Phone Calls For Gabby!  Help CD3 Candidate Gabby Saucedo-Mercer  reach Republicans who might vote regularly and Independent voters.  There are more Democrats than Republicans in CD 3, so Gabby must get all Republicans and some of the Independent vote to win.  In addition to visiting them, we are now contacting them by phone.  The calls are made from the comfort of your own home, whenever (within reason) it is convenient for you; the contact lists and the call script are supplied.  Typically you can reach 30 numbers in 30 minutes and in most cases you just leave a message.  Contact Andrew Costanzo at keepazred@hotmail.com or call 480 677-0697 to volunteer.  Gabby needs your help!

·       Gov Jan Brewer - Flags Lowered for National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service:  “Every October, America pays tribute to the brave firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty over the past year. This weekend, our Nation recognizes 107 fallen heroes, whose deaths serve as a solemn reminder of the daily perils and selfless sacrifices of first responders. This year is an especially poignant occasion, as among those 107 men and women are the names of Arizona’s 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots. We are forever grateful to the Yarnell 19, all past and present firefighters, and all first responders, for their noble service. They devote and knowingly risk their lives to defend people and property – and while they do not seek our praise, they have earned it eternally. Let us continue to pray for our fallen firefighters and their families, and for the safety of all who continue to serve in this honorable and heroic position. In commemoration of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, I have ordered that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset, Sunday, October 12, 2014. I encourage all Arizonans to join in this tribute.”

·       Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett has joined an effort to encourage students across the state to participate in the largest student-driven civics project in the United States this fall. Students will have the opportunity to cast their votes in the My Voice™ National Student Mock Election giving them the opportunity to select their candidates in both federal and state elections, and to talk about the issues they care about this fall and beyond. The National Student Mock Election will take place entirely online, as will student polling on national topics, social issues, education, and local communities.  Students, teachers, and parents in Arizona are encouraged to register their schools to take part at www.nationalmockelection.org

·       With less than three weeks before the General Election, Secretary of State Ken Bennett believes it’s necessary to clear up inaccurate information being presented by Secretary of State Candidate Terry Goddard (D) over the past few months. The latest examples occurred during the Clean Elections Debate, hosted by Arizona PBS.  During the broadcast, Goddard made two statements that were either terribly ignorant or deliberate misrepresentations of the truth for political gain.“I’m confused where Mr. Goddard came up with amount of $2 million to implement the so-called Dual Track, or bifurcated system of voting in the primary,” said Bennett.  Truth is, our counties will spend about $500,000 for both the primary and general elections.  This system—one that I’ve repeatedly said is not ideal for election officials—was developed in response to two conflicting directives.  One from Arizona’s voters, (Prop. 200) and the U.S. Supreme Court (Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council of Ariz., Inc.)  As I’ve publically said before, and I’ll ask Mr. Goddard, which directive should we ignore; Arizona’s voters or the Supreme Court? In addition, I’m troubled by Mr. Goddard’s characterization that students, ‘who have to vote a federal ballot, are treated as second class citizens,’ which is patently false and simply absurd.  College students do not have to vote a federal form.  Those voting a federal ballot are simply doing so because they haven’t provided proof-of-citizenship to our County Recorders, a requirement approved by voters in 2004.  Election officials around the state are committed to treating each voter equally and for Mr. Goddard to assume otherwise is offensive to elections officials statewide.  Combined with his conspiratorial accusation of voter suppression when he declared ‘independent voters get only one chance to cast a ballot,’ I question Mr. Goddard’s fundamental understanding of how elections work in Arizona. While I certainly appreciate Mr. Goddard’s compliment about my singing voice during the debate, I would ask he either learn the songs or stop making up the lyrics.”    www.azsos.gov    (602) 542-4285

·       Graham Nudges Duval’s Memory: Fred DuVal, Democrat candidate for governor in Arizona and prominent influence peddler, promised to release the list of his lobbying clients at the Clean Elections debate on Sept 28.  It has been 12 days and there has been no sign that he intends to follow through with this critical disclosure.  What exactly is Fred DuVal hiding? “Voters are tired of hearing candidates like lobbyist Fred DuVal making promises and then breaking them shortly afterward, and DuVal’s failure to fully disclose what he promised is just adding insult to injury,” said AZGOP Robert Graham. (Statement, Clean Elections Debate, 9/29/14) See list other things that have come to light the past 12 days at azgop.org/blog/

·       AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham: Fred DuVal, Democrat candidate for governor in Arizona and special interest lobbyist, worked as a “consultant” for Swiss bank UBS in 25 states.  In several of those states, including New Jersey, DuVal failed to register as a lobbyist despite state regulations that show he should have.  Why is DuVal hiding his lobbying activities? “Democrat candidate Fred DuVal is a lobbyist, plain and simple, and was hired by a Swiss bank to secure bonds in 25 states,” Arizona Republican Party Chairman Robert Graham said. “Yet, for reasons unknown to everyone except Fred DuVal, he refuses to disclose his client list despite public promises to do so.  Could it be because he failed to register his lobbying activity in states like New Jersey, despite the fact that it was required?  What else could Fred DuVal be hiding?” Fred DuVal’s Lobbying Background:

·       CD2 Candidate Martha McSally: Continuing to connect with the Hispanic community, McSally yesterday sat down with Hispanic leaders and community members for a roundtable discussion focused on improving education and employment opportunities in Southern Arizona. McSally has been active in reaching out to the nearly 200,000 Hispanic residents, including releasing her third Spanish-language ad of the year this week. "You see many candidates take the Hispanic vote for granted without taking the time to connect with Hispanic families. That's a mistake," said Ray Flores, Owner of El Charro Restaurant in Tucson. "It's great to see Martha actively reaching out and asking what our ideas and concerns are - it's a good sign for how she'll lead in Congress."  "Martha is taking the time to sit down and listen to our concerns about what's happening," said Nelly Martinez, an education department worker and mother of four. "Hispanics are such an important part of our community and it's clear to me that she is a leader who will represent all people in Southern Arizona." "When you speak to people with your heart and show you care about their concerns, they will vote for you, no matter their party," said Fernando Gonzalez. "That's what I see Martha doing and it's very refreshing.". In addition to last night's roundtable with Hispanic community members, McSally has held a higher education roundtable to discuss solutions to the issue of rising education costs and two small business roundtables to discuss how Washington's policies are impacting Southern Arizona business owners. McSally is an independent voice committed to fighting for equal treatment of women and more opportunity for the middle class. She has been active in defending critical job-creators like Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and Fort Huachuca. A 26-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, McSally was the first woman to fly in combat and command a fighter squadron in U.S. history.

·       Gubernatorial Candidate Doug Ducey: It's been a big week on the campaign trail - Four tour stops to rally volunteers on Saturday, More than seven endorsements this week, One listening session with educators, tele-townhall with Congressman Matt Salmon and Two new coalitions. Saturday started at a park in Phoenix, stopped by a volunteer phone bank at Ducey HQ, on to a barbecue in Glendale and the GOP Victory Office in Sun City. Monday, we had a listening session with educators and principals from public district and public charter schools.  Jennifer Hill, one the educators who participated in the session said, “Doug showed a true commitment to public education today.  The fact that he took the time to not just hear about public education, but to actually listen to teachers and administrators' experiences in the classroom, and ask questions about how he can better support us shows that he recognizes the importance of those in the classroom, and in the schools doing the most important work.” Tuesday night we hosted a tele-townhall with Congressman Matt Salmon that had thousands of people on the call.  We heard questions from Arizonans across the state and talked about my plans to kick-start our economy and improve K-12 education among other topics. Ducey rolled out two more coalitions this week, Democrats for Ducey and Women for Ducey.  Democrats for Ducey is co-chaired by Stan Abrams, president of The Stanley Group and Pat Quinn, retired president of Qwest AZ. Women for Ducey is co-chaired by Cindy McCain, a businesswoman and philanthropist; Sharon Harper, CEO of the Plaza Companies; Lea Marquez-Peterson, a business leader in Southern Arizona; and Sharon Lechter, author and founder and CEO of Pay Your Family First. Early voting has just begun, and the next few weeks are critical.  Don't delay in telling your friends and family to vote Doug Ducey for Governor.

·       LD28 House Candidate Shawnna Bolick: Incumbent Eric Meyer and I disagree on pensions for politicians: he likes them, I don’t.  To meet our obligations to current retirees and public employees, we must reform the system, or impose huge tax burdens. In 2013, the Legislature took a the first step toward reform, passing HB 2608, which put an end to the costly and extravagant defined contribution plan for future elected officials and replaced it with a less expensive 401(k)-style defined-contribution plan.  The reform passed and was signed into law. Rep Phil Lovas said during a floor speech: “This public pension plan is the most lucrative lifetime benefit in the State of Arizona.  Because it is so lucrative it is unsustainable in the long-term... This bill ensures the solvency of the plan for elected officials in the system, it modernizes it for new members, and it provides financial relief for cities and counties. Meyer voted no.  I would have voted yes.  I believe elected officials should make an example of themselves as a first step to curbing unsustainable costs.   Meyer wanted to keep his pension.  I applaud officials that worked to pass HB 2608. The pension plan for elected officials is in more trouble than any other in the state—58 percent of its liabilities are funded.  If revenues fall short of obligations, taxpayers will be forced to pick up the tab. Under the old pension plan—that Meyer continues to have—taxpayers contribute 39 percent of each elected official’s salary.  Under the new plan for officials elected this year, that contribution will drop to 6 percent. Very few LD 28 residents receive such gold-plated benefits.  Fiscal responsibility begins at home.  I will look to find efficiencies—and to make sure we have the resources to fund the commitments. Meyer supports taxpayer-sponsored spending sprees. Isn’t it time to elect someone who will lead on pension reform and fiscal responsibility, not obstruct it?

·        Priebus: Voting For Dems Is Voting For Obama Policies

·        RNC Chairman Reince Priebus On President Obama’s post-election plan to close the Guantanamo Bay prison and move terrorists to America by unilateral executive action: “Once again, President Obama is trying to go around the Constitution and around Congress to force his liberal agenda on the American people.” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. “His actions threaten our national security. ISIS is terrorizing the Middle East, beheading Americans, and plotting ways to kill us and destroy our way of life. Suddenly, the stability of North Korea is in question with the disappearance of dictator Kim Jong Un. Americans are worried about our security, the world seems to be in chaos, yet President Obama has chosen this precise time to import known terrorists into the United States. When the president should have been working on a strategy to destroy ISIS, it seems he was actually working on a strategy to move the world’s deadliest terrorists from Guantanamo to our cities and neighborhoods. Even a dyed-in-the-wool liberal should recognize this is the worst time for President Obama to try to keep a promise he made to his political base six years ago.”

Mark Warner discussed the possibility of several jobs, including a federal judgeship, for the senator’s daughter in an effort to dissuade him from quitting the evenly divided state Senate. Warner was part of a string of high-powered Virginia Democrats who in late May and early June pressed then-state senator Phillip P. Puckett not to go through with plans to give up his seat in the middle of a bitterly partisan battle over health care.
