·       Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio: Tuesday, March 3 - Phoenix politicians will be voting to refer a $30.5 Billion tax and spend proposal to the ballot.  Monies that compete for critical services in our community, like new teachers will be railroaded to trains. Now is not the time to waste important hardworking taxpayer’s monies.  “Those who want to increase funding for K-12 education should oppose the City of Phoenix’s rush to the ballot for an increase in its sales tax for transportation…K-12 education should get first dibs on a sales tax increase, even if how and when a proposal might arise is uncertain.  Phoenix should stand down.” - (Robert Robb, Arizona Republic, 3/1/15)  Salaries for 222,222 new teachers gives you a perspective of what you can do with just $1 Billion of the $30.5 Billion they want to spend on trains. Education is at a critical time with politicians blaming each other for the funding shortfall. Well, this new proposal tells you they don’t have their priorities straight. Some would rather spend your money on things that are not even in the top ten of your priority list. It is time to stop the nonsense and tell Phoenix politicians to get their act together and get their priorities straight.  If their proposal passes then there will be very little money left for the things that really matter.

·       Secretary of State Michele Reagan has unveiled the redesigned, mobile enabled,  The revamped website makes good on her campaign commitment to modernize the systems that provide important information to Arizona’s citizens. serves as a centralized clearinghouse of information related to business filings, elections and voting information, the Address Confidentiality Program and much more.  With useful links to the various divisions under the purview of the Secretary of State’s office, citizens can utilize the site as a starting point to find everything from lobbyist reports and the official rules of the state to the Digital Arizona Library and latest exhibit in the Capitol Museum.

“During the campaign, I made a promise to Arizona’s voters that I would work to improve any antiquated technologies or outdated systems,” said Secretary Reagan.  “Near the top of the list of priorities, were upgrades to the website to increase transparency and make doing business in the state easier.  Over the past few months, our in-house IT professionals and web experts made it their mission to make the site more user-friendly with simplified navigation and intuitive browsing.  I think most people will agree that the new is a great step forward. It’s also exciting to note that we aren’t finished with this website refresh,” continued Reagan.  “Over the summer, we’ll also unveil the new interactive campaign finance reporting system.  The platform will provide more precise information as to who is influencing our elections and integrates a new program we designed named ‘Follow the Money.’ I believe that the people of Arizona will be more likely to engage with their state government if we give them technology that is easy to use and understandable.  A refreshed is the first step.”

·       Sens John McCain (R-Ariz.) And Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, sent a views and estimates letter to the Senate Budget Committee last week as a regular part of the annual budget process. The letter requests that defense spending be restored to Budget Control Act (BCA) levels prior to sequestration: $577 billion for national defense discretionary budget authority, in addition to the necessary funds for Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO). The full text of the letter is available here.

·       As Part Of The March 2-6 National School Breakfast Week, schools across Arizona will participate in breakfast-themed activities celebrating that children who eat breakfast at school start the day ready to learn. “Too many children are arriving at school hungry and we know learning is harder for hungry children,” said Mary Szafranski, Associate Superintendent at the Arizona Department of Education.  “A healthy breakfast helps students focus in the classroom and perform better. That’s why we are highlighting the healthy breakfasts that are available every morning in Arizona schools.” More than 1,600 Arizona schools offer students a healthy breakfast. Most school breakfasts cost less than $2. Low-income families can apply to receive free or reduced price meals by contacting  their school cafeteria managers or district food service directors.

·       McCain’s Voting Record:  From Jan 1987 to Feb 2015, McCain missed 970 of 9,420 roll call votes, which is 10.3%. This is worse than the median of 1.7% among the lifetime records of senators currently serving. The chart below reports missed votes over time.

·       Congressman Matt Salmon: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States, and this year alone nearly 50,000 Americans are expected to die from it.  As just one of this disease's insidious forms, our nation's leaders must commit to ensure our medical researchers have the funds necessary to finally put an end to all forms of cancer.  As I promised, last week I asked the House Budget Committee to ensure the National Institute of Health is adequately funded in order to carry on the quest of finding a cure for this disease.  By reallocating the money wasted on duplicative or wasteful programs, we are able to increase this funding at no additional cost to the taxpayer.  Click here to watch the full video.

·       Congresswoman Martha McSally: This week, I joined 28 of my House colleagues to call on the Administration to explain how they’re working to implement critical new programs to improve rural veterans’ access to health care. The Veterans Choice Program, which was signed into law last August as part of the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act, aims to expand network health care coverage to veterans living in rural areas who have experienced wait times exceeding 30 days or live at least 40 miles from the nearest VA clinic. See letter HERE.

·       Gov Doug Ducey Responds To The Auditor General Report highlighting Arizona school district spending for fiscal year 2014. Among its findings, Arizona school districts spent 53.8 percent of its total available dollars on classroom instruction - lower than the national average of 60.9 percent and the lowest percentage in Arizona since 2001. Ducey's budget proposal adds $134 million to the classroom, which equals more than $100 in additional support for every Arizona student. "This report points to Arizona's urgent need to start putting classrooms first and direct more dollars where the learning happens," said Ducey. "We cannot be content with the status quo when we continue to spend significantly less than the national average in the classroom. We owe it to Arizona students and teachers to ensure more money gets to our classrooms so we can be successful in the mission at-hand - improving education results for all Arizona students."

·       Congresswoman Martha McSally today voted in support of legislation to improve long-term care for veterans. The bill, H.R. 294, the Long-Term Care Veterans Choice Act, would allow eligible veterans to receive medical foster home care to meet their long-term care needs, something currently unavailable to them. “We have a responsibility to do everything in our power to care for the men and women who have served in defense of our country,” said McSally. “Allowing veterans to receive care at a smaller, more home-like setting, instead of nursing homes, can make a big difference in their daily lives, giving them the improved quality of life and care they deserve.” The Long-Term Care Veterans Choice Act passed today with strong bipartisan support 405 to 0.

·       Yesterday, Rep. McSally Hosted Chairman Of The Veterans Affairs Committee Jeff Miller in Tucson to tour the Southern Arizona VA and meet with veteran students at the UA VETS Center. She has actively worked to improve care for Southern Arizona veterans, including recently calling on Administration officials to explain how they’re working to implement critical new programs to improve rural veterans’ access to health care.

·       Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (D) voted in favor of legislation to prevent a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security. Sinema after the vote:  “Congress must stop playing irresponsible political games with Arizona’s and America's security. I voted for this bill because homeland security and law enforcement professionals in Arizona need these resources to keep our communities safe. Shutting down our government because of partisan gridlock is reckless and hurts America. I’ve always said I will work with anyone who is serious about getting things done. A one week fix isn’t enough. It’s time for Congress to come together and find a long-term solution that puts our country’s security first.”

·       Supt of Public Instruction Diane Douglas has expressed her appreciation for the work of Arizona’s public charter and traditional public schools after the release of the Arizona Auditor General’s Fiscal Year 2014 School District Spending Report. The report shows that Arizona lags behind the national average for per-pupil spending in almost every category. “It is time to stop looking at percentages when we evaluate our schools and their spending,” said Douglas. “Schools spend dollars, not percentages. I find it inspiring that our schools have continued to strive for excellence given the restraints placed upon them by limited budgets. The dollar-to-dollar comparisons of Arizona expenditures to national averages are truly sobering when we consider how much less our schools have to work with. Our schools are doing a miraculous job in comparison.”  The Superintendent also pointed out that the Arizona numbers are based on 2014, while the most current numbers to compare nationally are from 2012. “If you take into account the increases made by other states during the last two years, there is an even more stark contrast. For instance, Arizona is a large state so transportation costs per pupil are much higher than in Rhode Island, Massachusetts or other more compact regions.”
