In 2009, she received the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award. O’Connor also founded iCivics; an online program dedicated to teaching civics and is the inspiration behind the O’Connor House, an organization dedicated to solving problems through civil discourse.

2015 Posthumous Inductees

ü  Marietta Bryant (1911-2003) & Daisy Moore (1908-1985) stood up for the rights of all qualified educators to teach in Arizona’s desegregated schools. In 1951, the Globe/Miami school boards closed its two African American schools and removed Moore and Bryant from their teaching jobs. Moore and Bryant, working through the legal system, successfully reversed their dismissals and in September 1952, returned to teach in the newly-integrated classrooms.

ü  Lorraine W. Frank (1923-2005) was the founder and first Executive Director of the Arizona Humanities Council. During her tenure (1973 – 1989) Lorraine oversaw the distribution of over $3M in grants and awards. She was a member of The National Council on the Humanities, the Arizona Board of Regents and the recipient of many local, state and national honors and awards.

ü  Louise Foucar Marshall (1864-1956) The first female professor in Arizona taught Botany, English, French, Latin and Spanish. In 1901 she became head of the Department of Ancient and Modern Languages at the University of Arizona. In 1930, Louise co-founded the Marshall Foundation, the first private foundation in Arizona. Her goal was to create a scholarship fund to aid women who wanted to attend the U of A.

ü  Helen K. Mason (1912-2003) Born in Phoenix, Mason was the Founder and Executive Director of the Black Theatre Troupe. For more than 21 years she devoted her time and resources, working to bring the arts to inner- city youth. In 1986, she received the Governor’s Arts Award for her work. The Black Theatre Troupe continues to enhance Arizona’s culture through its artistic productions at the Helen K. Mason building.

ü  Lucy Sikorsky, M.D. (1899-1972) came to Arizona in 1950 as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service. She was assigned to the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Bylas, where she worked until January 1953. Later in 1953, she was named Director of Maricopa County Hospital (MCH). Sikorsky is credited with modernizing the hospital and the newly- created Board of Public Health. She also is known for her charitable medical service to orphanages and the poor.

·       Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04)  after voting against legislation that failed to defund President Obama’s executive amnesty, which ultimately passed the House by a vote of 257 to 167: “The executive branch has slowly and unilaterally expanded its ability to bypass Congress and impose its will without the consent of Representatives elected by the American people. Today’s vote in the House continues this destructive trend. I am extremely disappointed that Congress had a choice to stand against a lawless and unaccountable Obama Administration, but failed to have the fortitude to reject the president’s overreach. I fear that our nation will look back on this day and regret the unscrupulous precedent established allowing for ideological lawlessness which cannot ever be reversed. The consequences of a feckless balance of power are far reaching and will affect future events that we cannot begin to perceive. For these reasons, I will never relent and never yield in my effort to return the balance of power in the United States to the American people and their elected Representatives. Nothing is more important than defending the rule of law and our Constitution.”

·       Supt of Public Instruction Diane Douglas said today that the Arizona Department of Education will continue monitoring the Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) for potential violations of A.R.S. §15-112 for the remainder of the school year, but that it will not withhold funding at this time. “Given TUSD’s cooperation with the monitoring process and evidence of their attempts to improve compliance with the statute, it is in the best interest of the district’s students to move forward without denying any state aid,” said Douglas. “I look forward to continuing our work with Superintendent H.T. Sanchez to ensure such a measure does not become necessary in the future and commend him on his efforts over the last two months.” Douglas said the department has concluded that the District-approved curricula do not appear to violate statute. However, she said the department remains deeply concerned that some TUSD teachers are not following the curricula for the ethnic studies classes. While TUSD has clearly corrected a few situations, there is still work to be done.
