·       US Senate candidate Alex Meluskey: “I am running for the United States Senate here in Arizona because as a citizen I am gravely concerned with the lack of direction, lack of principles and lack of citizen representation in our country.  I am in a unique position that enables me to shift my business interests into the hands of others focusing my energies on giving others like me a voice I feel we do not have.  I see too few leaders in Washington standing up for the people. The people deserve leaders who will be direct with where they stand on issues and what they plan to do. After that, the leaders must be accountable to their promises. I will be direct, I will be honest and I will be accountable to the people for my promises.”  See

·       Recall petitions against Yavapai County Republican Chairman Michael Sanders are being circulated among the Yavapai County precinct committeemen (PCs), according to petition author Richard Hennessy. See 5-16-15-briefs   Sanders is also the subject of an open letter recently signed by YCRC Second Vice Chair L. G. Mace, Treasurer Roger Reinsch and Assistant Treasurer Craig Arps objecting to Sanders management style. See 5-3-15-briefs  Hennessey said YCRC has been in disarray since Sanders was elected to the chairmanship.  He said PCs are required to collect 90 PC signatures to have a Sanders recall election.  Hennesssey’s recall petition against Sanders reads:

“We the below signed elected Precinct Committeemen of the Yavapai County Republican Committee call for a Special Meeting  (Art. 5.4 of the YCRC Bylaws) for the purpose of recalling Chairman Michael Sanders. Said meeting to be held within  forty-five (45) days of the receipt of this request by the Yavapai County Republican Executive Committee.”

·       Congressman Matt Salmon on  honoring  local Arizona businesses receiving the President’s prestigious “E” Award in recognition of their significant contributions to the expansion of U.S. exports.“Exports are an essential part of the U.S. economy and these businesses have been recognized by the President’s “E” Award as leaders in the field, serving as examples of success in exporting from Arizona,” said Rep. Matt Salmon. “I’m proud of the recognition they’ve received through this award and their success showcasing the growing role exports play in Arizona business.  These are real examples from within our community of how trade benefits Arizona.”

This year, 26 companies were honored with the President’s “E” Award for Exports for demonstrating a sustained increase in export sales over a four-year period.  Three of the businesses are in Arizona’s Fifth District.  They are:

ü  International, Mesa, Ariz. Rigid Industries LED Lighting, Gilbert, Ariz.

ü  Wisdom Natural Brands, Gilbert, Ariz.

ü  Wudel

Background: In 1961, President Kennedy signed an executive order reviving the World War II “E” symbol of excellence to honor and provide recognition to America's exporters. The President’s “E” Award is the highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports.

·        John McCain & Lindsey Graham On The Fall Of Ramadi To ISIL  “Nearly 200 Americans gave their lives fighting in Ramadi, yet the Administration continues to denigrate their sacrifice with statements diminishing the city’s importance. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Martin Dempsey said Ramadi was just ‘brick and mortar.’ Today, Secretary of State John Kerry called Ramadi a mere ‘target of opportunity,’ never mind the countless Iraqis slaughtered in the aftermath of the city’s fall. The fall of Ramadi, despite Administration statements to the contrary, is a significant defeat.

·       Clair Van Steenwyk: AZ LD 23 Takes Control of Its' Endorsements - The PC's in LD 23 voted on 5/14/15 to have the ability to endorse a candidate - not just for each individual PC but the LD as a Whole - which gives them some ability to have an impact on not only their local senators & representatives but statewide and federal candidates as well. This move was brought about by those in LD 23 Leadership team and the LD knowing of it, so was not done...behind closed doors.  All PC's were notified and allowed to speak at the meeting  - for or against it or make changes for that matter if accepted. They also had a legal team look at it to be certain of its' legality before moving to an open vote. It required 2/3 majority vote in an open meeting at which both sides spoke in a very civil manner. Jean & I were asked to view this Historical moment. As we observed we were asked by some what we thought of the change and we gave them our resounding approval of the change. I do believe this will give them a better vetting process and also the ability to have more influence on candidates  - when they realize the entire LD could endorse them which is a great benefit. As of now this is the only AZ LD to do this. I'm hoping others will follow LD23s lead. We wish them well with this endeavor to return the real power to the local PC and remove it from the so called Power Players in the State.

·       Message From A LD20 Constituent To Rep Anthony Kern Regarding AZ Board Of Education Meeting Slated For Monday 5/18 At 9 AM: I just learned yesterday (Saturday) of something you may be able to comment on and/or inform your constituents about ASAP.

Diane Douglas gave an update in the morning about her office and her projects. Afterward, it was mentioned that the AZ Board of Education had moved many of her employees into another building, away from her office. Now, at tomorrow's Board of Education meeting (9 AM, 1535 W. Jefferson, Room 122), they have added 3 items to their agenda concerning the Superintendent.  These are distressing to me. I plan to attend the meeting, if only to demonstrate that voters are watching.

ü  Item 4M would ask/direct the Supt. to grant the employees of the Investigation Unit access to necessary documents, records and electronic information (transfer confidential info to that other building or wherever their offices finally land).

ü  Item 4N considers that the duties of the Executive Director include authority to act on behalf of the Board in all administrative matters (transfer the Supt.'s executive authority to an appointed/hired Exec. Director).

ü  Item 4O considers a response to the suit the Supt. filed last week as to the proper division of authority between the Supt. and the Board.  (The Supt. seeks to get a decision of the court on this now that the proposed bill didn't make it.)
It looks like the Board  seeks to undo the vote of the people in electing the Supt.
It is also a trend in the states that the Supt. is being removed from the election process and is more and more being appointed by the governors.  (Down to about 13 states still elect this office.) Is this something you can advise your constituents about?

·       Wes Harris To Rep Anthony Kern/LD20:  Good Show Anthony.  I only wish I could be there with you.  Your analysis is right on point.  This was what the Governor was after when he blocked Diane's firing of her employees that did work for the SBE.  He should have been admonished and this board should also be admonished.  A citizen's initiative or a Legislative Referendum changing the State's Constitution making every position on the SBE and elective office needs to take place to reverse this grab for power away from We the People by unelected 'professional' Board Members.   We the People currently elect a Superintendent of Education in all 15 counties and these are the people that should be serving on the SBE...not self interest, special interest stodges as are the current members.
Diane needs to step up and not back down as she did with the Budget, the Firings and any and every attempt to block her office's authority.  She represents We the People and needs to understand that we will support her efforts to stem this unconstitutional power grab by the Executive branch.  The Senate Education Committee needs to also re establish it's oversight role when members are nominated  by the Governor rather than 'rubber stamp' them. -- Wes Harris: PC, Block Captain, LD20 Second Vice Chair 602-942-9281, 602-432-2871 (cell)
