·       Congressman Martha McSally will hold a roundtable meeting with local and federal law enforcement, local elected officials, and representatives from area non-profits on Sat, Jan 31 to discuss ways to prevent human trafficking in Southern Arizona and provide care for victims. The discussion follows a series of 12 bills passed with bipartisan support by the House of Representatives this week and comes before two upcoming events in Arizona expected to be a draw for traffickers: the Super Bowl in Glendale and the Annual Gem Show in Tucson.  The meeting is scheduled in the City Council Ward 6 Office (3202 East 1st Street, Tucson, AZ). Contact: Patrick Ptak  (202) 603-3100 or patrick.ptak@mail.house.gov.

·       The Paradise Republican Women will hear Author Loren Spivak  make the case that capitalism is the victim of environmental extremists who destroy prosperity without achieving even their own goals. He is the author of "Free Market Warrior" and "The Gorax."   He will address the group at 11 am, Sat., Feb 14 at Gainey Ranch Golf Club, 7600 E Gainey Club Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85258.  10:30 am social. $30 per person.  Reservation required by Thur., Feb 12.

·       Jack Hoffman Is Leading A Moving Of Higley School District Voters who are urging Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools Don Covey to appoint Michelle Anderson to a vacancy on the Higley District School Board that occurred just prior to the general election -- but too late to put a third vacancy on the Nov ballot.  Anderson missed being elected to the board by 90 votes when four candidates ran for two open slots on the board this past fall. Hoffman’s group prefers the local taxpayers decide who fills the vacancy rather that county superintendents, who sometimes bypass the voices of the voters in filling such vacancies. Covey will make his decision on Jan 31, according to Hoffman.  Contact Hoffman at 480- 980-7020 or JMH993@gmail.com   Contact Covey at 602-506-3753 Don.Covey@MCESA.Maricopa.gov  or Veronica.Brawner@MCESA.Maricopa.gov

·       Debbie Lesko’s Legislative Report: I was sworn into office on January 12th as your new State Senator and I am off and running working hard for you. I am very pleased that I have been named the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.  The Senate Finance Committee hears legislation dealing with taxes and public pensions….two very important issues. I am also a member of the Appropriations, Health, Energy & Water, and State Debt and Budget Reform committees. On Jan. 16th Governor Ducey revealed his budget proposal which is available HERE.  I am pleased that the proposal requires government to live within its means and moves vital school funding out of administration and into the classroom.  As a member of the Appropriations Committee I will be reviewing the budget more closely in the coming weeks. This year I will once again be sponsoring “big issue” legislation and legislation requested directly by my constituents to solve real-life problems they have encountered.  I will update you on my legislation in future newsletters. This year, I will also be heading up a Public Pension Reform Working Group whose goal will be to find ways to help sustain the retirement system for our firefighters and police, while protecting the taxpayers.  This is an extremely important issue and one that I am pleased to be a part of. I ran for office to make a difference.  I am willing to take on big issues and fight for what I believe is best for our state and nation.  At the same time, I sponsor legislation to solve the smaller problems too.
