·       Jane Schutte, Long-Time LD22/LD4  Secretary: I, as I do each day, read the Republican Communications (Briefs) and agree the Republican Party is leaving us.  I made the calls yesterday to our Senators regarding the Bill that stripped Diane Douglas of her powers.  Unfortunately it passed.  I was particularly upset to see Diane support Kelli Ward in writing this Bill.  Does she not realize she was elected by the people to eliminate Common Core and change the State Department of Education to more conform to the will of teachers, parents when it comes to their kids.  The State Department of Education members are not elected by the people she was.

·       In Memoriam: We wish to express the gratitude of the Yavapai County Republican Party for John S. Johnson's service as a Precinct Committeeman, State Committeeman, and former Yavapai County Party Chair, the community, and the State of Arizona and our regret at his passing very recently.  He will be missed.

·       Yavapai County Republicans Chairman Michael Sanders:   We have 227 PCs to date. We started with 184. That is 43 new PCs in less than two months. And..That is almost half way to all Precincts being full!! Our Area Directors are organizing and recruiting. We are netting over 20 new PCs per month and on target for filling all 473 PC positions in 13 months or less. Just in time for the 2016 Primary Election push!

·       AzCDL Update: Floor Debate Scheduled - Urgent Action Needed

ü  HB 2320 (Rep. Brenda Barton, LD-6), the AzCDL-requested bill which would exempt CCW permit holders from being disarmed when entering state and local government property unless every person entering is screened for weapons, is scheduled for a House Committee of the Whole (COW) hearing on Mon, March 2, 2015. tell your Representatives to support HB 2320 using AzCDL’s Legislative Action Center.  Click here to send prepared email.

Bills Progressing In other news, several pro-rights bills are progressing through the Legislature.

ü  HB 2509 (Rep. Kelly Townsend, LD-16), the AzCDL-requested bill which would add to the definition of aggravated assault the taking, or attempted taking, of any legally possessed firearm (other than by law enforcement), passed out of the House and was sent to the Senate on February 24.  It is scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Government Committee on Wednesday, March 4.  AzCDL’s representatives will be present at the hearing and available to provide any necessary testimony.

ü  HB 2527 (Rep. Anthony Kern, LD-20), the AzCDL-requested bill that would strengthen state firearms preemption by prohibiting local and state agency regulation of firearm transfers, passed out of the Senate Government Committee on February 25 by a 4-3 vote along party lines.

ü  SB 1291 (Steve Smith, LD-11), which would allow for injunctions, fines and civil suits when political subdivisions (counties, cities, etc.) disregard state firearm preemption statues, passed out of the Senate and was sent to the House on February 25.

·       "I Just Think We Ought To Move On To Other Things," said Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, according to The Hill. "I'm not sure how it helps for the American people to have the perception that Republicans in the Senate and Republicans in the House are at odds with each other. We have a lot of initiatives I think we could show the American people we can work together on."  homeland-funding-battle

·       Congressman Matt Salmon (AZ-05) after the U.S. House of Representatives voted to approve one week of short-term funding for the Department of Homeland Security. “Since the beginning of this debate, I have said that I would never vote to fund something I believed to be unconstitutional, even for one day.  Today, I kept that promise by voting against a bill that funded the President’s illegal executive actions on amnesty.  Sadly, passing bills that do nothing but kick the can down the road is something that has become commonplace in Washington.  I pledge to continue this fight in one week, so we can responsibly fund the Department of Homeland Security without funding the President’s unconstitutional actions.”

·       Republicans-Tout-Voter-Registration-Numbers   They Actually Lost 17,000 Registered Voters In The Last Year, While The Number Of Independent Voters Increased By 43,000.

·       McCain’s Voting Record:  From Jan 1987 to Feb 2015, McCain missed 970 of 9,420 roll call votes, which is 10.3%. This is worse than the median of 1.7% among the lifetime records of senators currently serving. The chart below reports missed votes over time.  govtrack.us/congress/members/john_mccain

·       Sen John McCain (R-AZ) on his vote to fund the Department of Homeland Security: “Over the last month, I have voted six times to stop President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. I continue to believe that these actions represent an unconstitutional overreach. I agreed with the president when he said that issuing them was ‘not an option’ because doing so would amount to ‘ignoring the law in a way that I think would be very difficult to defend legally.’ And while the president himself has conceded these actions as unlawful at least 22 times in recent years, Senate Democrats continue to prevent us from passing a bill invalidating them. Immigration is an issue that must be debated and decided by the representatives of the people, not by executive fiat. I am encouraged by the recent federal district court order in Texas finding that President Obama exceeded his authority under the law with his latest executive action. At the same time, for the safety and security of the American people, and at a time of growing terrorist threats here at home and abroad, I believe we have a responsibility to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security.”
