AZ CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS (300 word limit)

·       Congressman Matt Salmon on the aftermath of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that shook Nepal and caused over 1,200 deaths in and around the capitol of Katmandu. “I am saddened to hear about devastating earthquake Nepal experienced this morning, and the astronomical death toll.  My deepest condolences to the citizens of Nepal, and all of the families who have lost loved ones in this tragedy.  The United States will not forget Nepal, and will do everything we can to assist at this heartbreaking time.”

·       Congressman Paul Gosar: Since 2008, the calling card of the Obama Administration has been to use overreaching executive mandates and regulations to force American families, businesses and consumers into complying with its far-left, utopian ideology. The Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule (AFFH), soon to be implemented by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, is no different. AFFH is another top-down, social engineering experiment concocted by bureaucrats in Washington D.C. that attempts to federalize local zoning decisions. Local zoning decisions have traditionally been, and should always be, made by local communities and municipalities. American citizens should be free to choose where they would like to live and not be subject to neighborhood engineering and gerrymandering at the behest of an overreaching federal government. To fight back against this overreach I introduced a bill this past week that would stop this new Obama regulation that will turn over local zoning decisions to Washington bureaucrats. Click HERE to read more about this legislation and how I am working to protect your right to choose where you want to live.

·       Congressman Paul Gosar: I was very pleased this past week to see the House Appropriations Committee accommodate my request, supported by 103 bipartisan members of Congress, to block all funding for the EPA’s proposed water grab that will unilaterally expand the agency’s jurisdiction under the Clean Water Act. The House must utilize the power of the purse to stop the EPA from imposing devastating economic consequences for farmers, ranchers and small businesses throughout the country. Returning to regular order while using an open appropriations process is the key to reining in out-of-control federal spending as well as an overreaching executive branch. This critical aspect of our Constitutional checks and balances ensures that the will of the people is carried out and stops unelected bureaucrats from taking the law into their own hands.

·       Congressman Woman Martha McSally: This week, Congress will take up a critical issue for our community and one I've heard about often from you: keeping the A-10 Warthog flying. The House Armed Services Committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to decide national security funding authorization for next year. As a member of that committee, I've been working hard to emphasize the importance of the missions and personnel we have in Southern Arizona and stand up for our priorities. This week, I sent two letters to the House Armed Services Committee Chairman emphasizing the importance of two aircraft currently housed at DM: the A-10 Warthog and EC-130H. Both of these aircraft are currently deployed in the Middle East in the fight against ISIS and bring irreplaceable capabilities to our battlefield.  I also penned an op-ed in the New York Times titled, "Saving a Plane that Saves Lives," to make the case for keeping the A-10 flying.  op-ed HERE.

·       Congresswoman Martha McSally: The proposed consolidation of the Cherrybell Postal Facility in Tucson will harm local businesses, seniors, veterans, and residents across Southern Arizona who rely on prompt mail services to meet their needs. This week, I sat down with members of the Tucson City Council and local business and community leaders to discuss ways to coordinate our efforts to advocate for the facility's continued operation.

ü  One of my highest honors is nominating youth from Southern Arizona to attend one of our five U.S. service academies, and this week, we held an "Academy Day" with representatives from each service academy and UA ROTC. It was great to see so many students show interest in the service and leadership opportunities our academies offer.

ü  I'm grateful to Col. Jim Meger, Commander of the 355th Fighter Wing, and other DM leadership for taking the time to update me on the base's missions and activity. Right now, the number of troops deployed from DM is more than double the normal amount, showing the important role DM Airmen play in ensuring our national security.

ü  Southern Arizonans came together recently to remember victims of the Holocaust at the March for Remembrance in Tucson. It's important that we never forget the events that led to this terrible time in history, and I commend everyone who came out to take part in the walk.  Contact: , mcsally.house.gov.
