· Former Mesa Mayor Scott Smith will join Harvard’s Institute of Politics as a Resident Fellowship this fall, the Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy Jr. announced today. Smith is the third Arizona leader to be selected for this honor following Ambassador Barbara Barrett and former Phoenix Mayor Tim Barrows. The University’s IOP was created in 1966 to honor President Kennedy and inspire undergraduates to enter careers in politics and public service. Smith, mayor of Mesa from 2008 to 2014, will be teaching a weekly seminar open to all Harvard students on leadership in government. Resident Fellows live on campus and spend the semester mentoring a select group of students while participating in other activities at the University. “I am excited to work with the students at the Kennedy School of Government and share my real life experience as a private sector CEO and as Mayor of Mesa,” Smith said. “I hope I can teach and mentor these incredible young minds because I know they will inspire me.”
· Tom Morrissey, Immediate Past Chairman of the AZ GOP: We have control of the Senate and the House but all the change that we were promised has not come to pass? Why does the downward spiral of the excellence of this country continue well after the end of the reign of Pelosi and Reid? Are our replacement not much different? There are constant questions regarding the underlying the cause of this. I offer a possible reason. Celebrity! We put people in office and then make celebrities of them. We listen to their endless oratory on their solutions to problems… often times, problems they created. Have they even begun to reckon with Illegal Immigration and Obamacare? I haven’t seen a thing. Now that Trump and Cruz have broken through the establishment malaise there are distant rumblings from the elitists that they are having problems with what they are hearing from both of these men. They are stunned by the groundswell reaction of the grassroots to the truth being ‘trumpeted’ by Trump and Cruz. Establishment candidates are panicking and wondering where are their sycophants? They should look at FOX News and give an ear to Brit Hume and George Will. Trump is on the move and so is Cruz. Sycophants might want to awaken and get onboard with these folks or else Trump and Cruz might actually prevail here. The rush of the establishment sycophants to the sides of the establishment ‘celebrities’ is becoming old and laughably predictable. As I said when I was State Chairman, the people WE put them in office to serve us. We do not serve Them. When that fact is realized and brought home to bear, we will have the true change we are all yearning for. Until then I remain, ‘sick of the sycophants’.
· Sen John McCain will speak at 9 am., Mon., Aug 10 at the Marine Corps League’s National Convention in Paradise Valley, an 11 am town hall with Universal Technical Institute employees in Avondale, and a 2:45 pm town hall with Sub-Zero employees in Goodyear.
· Presidential Candidate Scott Walker won the straw poll conducted among 100 Maricopa County Young Republican Professionals Club following the FOX News top 10 GOP candidates last night. The straw poll results: Scott Walker (19%), Rand Paul (17.9%), Marco Rubio (13.1%), Ted Cruz (13.1%), Donald Trump (11.9%), Ben Carson (10.7%), John Kasich (7.1%), Jeb Bush (3.6%), Mike Huckabee (2.4%) and Chris Christie (1.2%). “We were thrilled to have a standing room only crowd on-hand for the first GOP presidential debate and to officially kick-off the 2016 primary process,” said Young Republican Professionals President Chris Herring. “With more than 90% of those in attendance being under the age of 30 we feel passionately that Millennial voters are going to be a dominant force across the country in the 2016 election. We look forward to an exciting race and look forward to the opportunities for Millennial Republicans to engage with all candidates as they make campaign stops in Arizona over the coming months.” Contact: Chris Herring, President, (510) 861-9600, MaricopaCountyYR@gmail.com
