ü  LD12 – BOS District 1, Chaired by Mickie Niland

ü  LD23 – BOS District 2, Chaired by Jim O’Connor

·       The AEA and Children's Action Alliance hosted a meeting this evening on “Why Common Core and High-Stakes testing is ‘good’ for Arizona” at the Arizona Community Church.  Speakers included Sen Jeff Dial, Rep. Jill Norgaard, Rep Bob Robson,  Supt Shauer, Jeremy Calles (Finance lead at Kyrene District and Chairman for AZBO) and Patrick Morales (Tempe Unified Student lobbyist). Gina Ray of Opt Out Az suggested earlier in the day that these questions be directed to the speakers.

1.     Has our state received any type of validity report on the AzMerit? And if so, where can I find that report? (The real answer is "no" and that the test has never been validated.)

2.     Why are parents and teachers never allowed to view the test? (The answer will be to prevent cheating.) But, then if parents & teachers can't ever see what their students missed, then how can they help them learn better?

3.     Are you familiar with the Statewide Longitudinal Database System and how FERPA laws have been weakened so that parents do not have to be informed when their child's personally identifiable information has been shared with outside companies and organizations?

4.     Are you aware of how much each AzMerit test question has cost our state to "rent" from The American Institutes for Research? ($5,000 per test question is the correct answer.) And wouldn't that money be put to better use in the classroom?

5.     Did you know that the Fordham Institute rated the Common Core standards with the same grade as our previous AIMS standards? So, how can you say that Common Core is an improvement?

6.     Why is the Chamber of Commerce promoting the national Common Core standards and associated high-stakes testing and data collection? Are you aware that Bill Gates (who will benefit monetarily from all 3 of these) donated millions to the Chamber of Commerce to promote the standards, testing, and data collection?

·       Congressman Trent Franks chatted with FOX News Talk Show Host Neil Cavuto at 10:45 am this morning about his recent trip to Israel, the nuclear deal with Iran and US Foreign policy. The Israel Allies Foundation organized a Congressional delegation including Franks Rep. Rothfus (R-PA), and Rep. Jenkins (R-WV) returned yesterday from talks with Prime Minister Netanyahu about US Policy. The delegation reports that the President’s bad deal with Iran has only emboldened Islamic Extremists. The U.S. delegation was stalked and harassed by a group of Muslim men during their visit to the Temple Mount. This was the most violent and threatening confrontation some in the delegation had ever experienced at the holy site. Discussions with Prime Minister Netanyahu were very telling of the threats, nuclear and non-nuclear, this bad deal poses to not only Israel but to other nations in the Middle East, according to Franks.  Franks first called for Iran to be referred to the UN Security Council in 2005 and since then he has warned the nation against any deal that does not immediately dismantle Iran's uranium enrichment. Recent meetings with leaders in both Israel and Egypt have reinforced fears that this deal will do nothing to prevent Iran -- still the world's foremost State sponsor of terrorism -- from gaining nuclear capability

Candidate Corner

Announced Candidate Commentary

Please comply with the Briefs 300 word limit policy.

·       Congressman David Schweikert: The summer heat is not stopping Nancy Pelosi and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz from directing big expenditures into Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.    They have been scrutinizing and analyzing districts across the southwest looking for weaknesses and vulnerabilities.  We need to spring into action. We cannot let them increase the number of Democrat seats in the House of Representatives. Delaying means loss of momentum. We need to stay on offense. dollars crucial. If we allow Pelosi and Wasserman-Schultz to run unchecked with vast sums of campaign cash, helping rubber-stamp liberals' campaign efforts across the southwest, there will be no stopping the far left!
