Republican Briefs

Thursday – Oct 15, 2015

·       Chips N Salsa (Central City Radio)  will feature Arizona Republican Assembly (AzRA) First Vice President Phil Mason at 6 pm., Sat., Oct 17 in a discussion on the Nov 3 K-12 Override/Bond issues that AzRA research has deemed unnecessary. The program will cover the number one issue facing every homeowner and small business owner in Arizona this fall – the outrageous number of K-12 school override and bond proposals that could mean billions of additional tax liens on Arizona properties that are taxed enough already, according to Mason.

“The message that schools are underfunded has been created by school administrators, then aided and abetted by the mainstream media and chamber cohorts.  This misleading story is bankrupting our state government and placing home owners in grave danger.  Arizona schools have never had more tax revenues in their history than this year. Their outrageous scheme must be brought out into the light of day and their plan defeated. If you want more information on how to defeat the largest tax increase in the history of Arizona, tune in at 6 pm., Saturday,” Mason said. or

·       LD18 Precinct Committeemen Last Night Voted  Unanimous Opposition To The Budget Override / Tax Increase Proposed By The Tempe Union High School District.

RESOLUTION – Opposing TUHSD Override on November 3, 2015

Special Election Ballot By Per Klype

ü  Precinct Committeeman of the Legislative District 18 Republican Party, representing Republicans in Ahwatukee, south Tempe, west Chandler, and Mesa Dobson Ranch, reject the $6.5 million override for Tempe Union High School District on the November 3, 2015 special election ballot. This override supports an increase in wasteful spending and an increase in bureaucracy at Tempe Union High School District and hence does not benefit parents or students in our community.   Contact – LD18 Chairman Mary Fritsche   (480) 705-8406.

·       The Republican Party of Maricopa County Executive Guidance Council Unanimously Opposes All School District Override And Bond Ballot Initiatives, Countywide.  “Public school systems in Maricopa County and across the state must live within their means, just as the hard working Arizonans that comprise their respective tax bases have had to do,” said Republican Party of Maricopa County Chairman Tyler Bowyer. “It is unacceptable that these public school districts continue to waste millions of taxpayer dollars on bloated administrator salaries, pet projects and unnecessary infrastructure, while simultaneously complaining that they are strapped for cash.”  The K-12 public school system in Arizona has demonstrated a decades long unwillingness to prioritize the needs of students and teachers first. To empower the very administrators that have repeatedly failed to focus on the needs of students with even more hard-earned tax dollars is fiscally irresponsible and bad for Arizona children and taxpayers. The Republican Party of Maricopa County opposes these attempts to increase taxes.  Contact: Jake Hoffman, Communications Director, (480) 980-7020,

Editor’s Note:  Early ballots went out Oct 3. The Executive Committee’s vote was taken at their Oct 7 meeting,, however, the official press release did not come out until this morning on this hot topic .

·       Those Who Are Concerned About Your School District Budget or upcoming override/bond issues can contact AzRA for a presentation on school financing. They have done their homework and you’ll be surprise to get the facts about why your tax dollars aren’t filtering down into the classroom, what administrators aren’t about to tell you, and where to look to find the waste in your public schools.

AzRA is in the forefront in the major issues facing our state and the Republican Party including school finance & bond/override elections, ballot harvesting, and closed primary power point presentations in County, Legislative District, Tea Party and Republican Club meetings. To arrange for an AzRA eye opener go to  or

·       The Republican National Committee (RNC) released a new web video entitled ‘Kerryesque,’ which highlights Hillary Clinton’s flip-flops on the issues: “It may be a new election cycle, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from the way Hillary Clinton has reverted to her old flip-flopping ways,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. “Voters rejected serial flip flopper John Kerry in 2004 and they will do the same to Hillary Clinton in 2016. The American people want a president they can trust, not one who will do or say anything to get elected.”

·       Republicans of Maricopa County Chairman Tyler Bowyer ran into some difficulties after announcing he had moved Oct 7 Executive Guidance Committee (EGC) meeting to the ASU campus to honor some of the College Republicans.  Various reports say he had to move the meeting to the Tempe Police Office late in the day because (take your pick)

 1. The county Republicans can’t hold meetings at the ASU College Republicans location.

 2.  Someone (reportedly an EGC officer) tipped off ASU officials that some EGC members carry concealed firearms – which aren’t allowed on campus.

3.  Bowyer forgot to get the AZGOP insurance policy switched from AZGOP Headquarters to ASU for that one evening.

Briefs emailed Bowyer a week ago trying to track down the official version, but he hasn’t responded.  Contrary to reports, Bowyer did attend the Oct 7 mtg.

·       After waiting more than 70 years,  local 93 year-old World War II veteran Leo Silverstein received a Purple Heart this afternoon for injuries he sustained in Sicily in 1943, from Congresswoman Martha McSally at the Southern Arizona Veteran's Home in Tucson.  Silverstein served as a machine gunner in World War II. In July 1943, he was injured after being hit by shell fragments to his shoulder and received a Purple Heart medal. He volunteered to re-join his unit and, while serving in Sicily a month later, sustained injuries to his head resulting from flying objects. Leo never received a Purple Heart for injuries he sustained in Sicily, possibly due to a 1973 fire in St. Louis that destroyed millions of veteran’s records. Records of his Sicily injuries were recently discovered in his footlocker by his daughter, who found a hand-written note from the doctor who treated him in Sicily.

·       Sen John McCain sent a letter to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Robert McDonald today urging him to reconsider the selection of Skye McDougall as the new director of the Southwest Health Care Network overseeing the Phoenix VA and other hospitals in Arizona following reports that she misled the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs about patient wait times at the Greater Los Angeles VA Medical Center. “Based on reports that Ms. McDougall purposely misled Congress regarding wait times for veterans in Southern California, I am extremely concerned by this appointment,” writes McCain. “I believe that this selection does nothing to regain veterans’ confidence that the VA has been reformed in the aftermath of the tragic scandal during which veterans died waiting for care while senior VA executives collected monetary bonuses. As the Phoenix VA Health Care System was ground zero for that scandal, the veterans in my state deserve better than to have a director who misled Congress about patient wait times or understated the severity of the VA’s failures.”
