10-23-15 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Briefs Editor   Frosty Taylor

Friday – Oct 23, 2015

·       AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham is recovering nicely from the Ulna Nerve Transposition surgery he had this morning.  He explained the Ulna nerve (funny bone nerve) in his left arm, near my elbow, was compressed causing the arm to feel like it had fallen asleep. The little finger and ring finger lost feeling and some motor functions.  If caught early enough, the relocation of the nerve helps to remove the compression and a full recovery is expected. The problem arose from 36 hours of driving time to get to Michigan to his father’s recent funeral. Cards and notes can be sent to Graham at AZGOP HQ, 3501 N. 24th St., Phoenix, AZ 85016.

·       National Association For Gun Rights Chairman Dudley Brown, is urging Arizonans to call Sens John McCain at 202-224-2235  and Jeff Flake at 602-840-1891.
and urge them to OPPOSE any “deal” on guns.  In a plea today Brown writes: “Have Republican leaders in the U.S. Senate have lost their minds? I’m afraid they're pushing two very dangerous ideas that could have drastic consequences for your right to bear arms. Unfortunately, your U.S. Senator, John McCain, may once again be making things worse.”

Brown points out McCain has consistently been one of the first Republicans to back almost any anti-gun “deal.”  Capitol Hill experts are warning McCain will be among the first to cave-in for a Republican-led gun ‘deal’ with the Democrats. McCain twice voted FOR Obama's failed gun control agenda in 2013.

Brown cautions, “They're also warning McCain could be the linchpin for any dangerous change to Senate rules. We simply can't afford to take any chances. That's why I hope you'll take action right away. Please call McCain right now and urge him to OPPOSE any ‘deal’ on guns.”

·       What is the big secret? Briefs still has no response from Republicans of Maricopa County Chairman Tyler Bowyer as to whether the $35K he announced as made from the 2015 Lincoln Dinner early last spring was $35K gross (before expenses) or net (after expenses). Second Vice Chair Aaron Borders claims the gross income was about $14K with net results of about $8K.

·       A Header In The Oct 19 Yellow Sheet reports that Sen John McCain’s ‘Hispanic Coalition’ launch falls flat: ‘Trump and McCain are one in the same’:   Effort exposes McCain’s inconsistent record and skepticism from Hispanic community. The article notes that Arizona Republic columnist E J Montini’s ‘How do you say McCain in Spanish? Flipflop’ reveals McCain’s record on immigration includinghis penchant for changing positions on this important issue whenever he faces re-election.”  Dem 2016 race Challenger Ann Kirkpatrick’s spokesman D.B. Mitchell, is quoted as saying. “Arizonans have tired of these same games every six years, and that’s why they’re ready for a fresh voice in the U.S. Senate.”

·       As You May Recall, a few weeks ago McCain made headlines when he was chased off the Navajo Reservation  by disgruntled Native Americans.  State Committeemen censured him in 2014 and some turned their back to him when he made a surprise appearance at the 2015 AZGOP State Convention earlier this year. McCain has three Republican challengers for the 2016 race – Dr. Kelli Ward, Alex Meluskey and Clair Van Steenwyk.

·       LD25 PC Karen Gevaert receives response from Congresswoman Martha McSally: “Thank you for contacting me regarding your concerns about refugees from Syria and the Middle East coming to the United States. I appreciate your thoughts on this important issue.

“As you may know, the civil war in Syria has cost over 200,000 lives and created about 4 million refugees. Conditions in Syria are horrifying, and the refugees include torture and rape victims, widows, and orphans. As of September 2015, the United States has given $4.5 billion in aid to assist Syrian refugees, more than any other country.  The U.S. recently pledged an additional $419 million in humanitarian aid.  The State Department has recently announced that the U.S. will let in no fewer than 10,000 Syrian refugees in fiscal year 2016.

“To protect the  homeland, it is essential that every person admitted to the U.S. is carefully and thoroughly investigated. This includes individuals from other nations besides Syria, since tens of thousands of foreign fighters are traveling to Iraq and Syria and many more are being inspired by ISIS online. I will continue to work with my colleagues on the Committees on Homeland Security and Armed Services to conduct oversight of the Syrian civil war and U.S. policy on accepting  refugees. As the 114th Congress addresses the many challenges facing our nation,  I hope you will continue to share your thoughts and concerns. – Martha McSally

·       Attorney General Mark Brnovich today announced that the Arizona Corporation Commission joined with 23 other states in filing suit against the Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") challenging the Obama Administration’s Section 111(d) Rule.  The AG’s Office and the Commission  are challenging the  plan to radically restructure the way electricity is produced and consumed throughout the country. The Rule, as promulgated by the EPA, would result in dramatically higher electricity bills and significantly less reliable service for families, businesses, hospitals, and schools across America. “I pledged to fight back against federal overreach and our office has kept that promise,” said Brnovich.  “I’m pleased to work with the Commission to defend hardworking taxpayers from the devastating utility rate hikes that will result from these rules.”
The Rule purports to require States to reorganize their energy grids, in order to reduce carbon emissions from electric-generating plants by 32 percent below 2005 levels by 2030.   The Rule could cost over $25 billion annually and these costs will ultimately be paid by consumers who could see their electric bills go up by 10% or more. “We need to ensure that this kind of Federal overreach does not impact our rate payers,” said  Arizona Corporation Commission Chairman Susan Bitter Smith.   “This ligation is one important tool the state has to guarantee Arizona’s energy resources will continue to be affordable and reliable.”

In the documents filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, The States make clear that EPA has no legal authority to promulgate or enforce the 111(d) Rule.  Challengers to the Rule include the Arizona Corporation Commission on behalf of Arizona, West Virginia, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.  Click Here To View Filing
