12-4-15 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Briefs Editor   Frosty Taylor    repcomm@cox.net

Web Master   John Strasser

Friday – Dec 4, 2015

·       Forests-Ready-For Christmas-Tree-Cutting-Season   Permits no longer available at chain of sporting good stores,  must be purchased at forest service ranger stations.

·        Volunteers Are Needed At 10 Am., Sat., Dec 5 to gather petitions signatures for Kelli Ward, Christine Accuro and other area Republican candidates at the Southeast Regional Library, 775 N Greenfield Rd., Gilbert, AZ 85234.

·       A Big ‘Thank You’ To Webmaster John Strasser for beating off the cyber gremlins and unscrambling site formatting this morning.  5 and 6 am readers found the Briefs archives listed above the newsletter, instead of down the left hand side where it belongs. Sorry for the inconvenience folks. – Editor Frosty Taylor

·       Donald Trump Is Once Again Alone At The Top of the Republican field, according to the latest CNN/ORC Poll, with 36% of registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents behind him, while his nearest competitor, Ted Cruz, trails by 20 points.  CNN.com

·       Does Anyone Remember a few short months ago when the AZGOP was less than welcoming to Trumps appearance in Phoenix?  It seems the Republican National Committee and the establishment  don’t want Trump on the ticket in 2016 but grassroots is leaning in his favor.  The next few months are going to be an interesting ride.

·       The Arizona Republican Assembly (AzRA) Christmas Party And State Membership Meeting is scheduled at 9 am., Sat., Dec 5 at the Devonshire Community Center, 2802 E Devonshire Ave, Phoenix 85016. Social time 8:30 am. Bring baked items ready to sell. Also asking for cash donations for "Operation Enduring Gratitude” – an organization that helps veterans build such things as a wheelchair ramp or gift cards for groceries or home repairs. AZRA members will also establish a plan for the January 2016 Maricopa County and AZGOP state meetings, as well as the next legislative session.  The State Executive Board meets at the close of the membership meeting.  Contact: Chairman Thayer Verschoor  thayerver@gmail.com

·       AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham, the executive board and elected officers have invited the Maricopa County Republican precinct committeemen, their family and friends to a free pancake breakfast at GOP headquarters, 3501 N. 24th St., Phx. between 8:30-11:30 am, Sat. Dec 5. No RSVP required.

·       Will Maricopa County Republican Chairman Tyler Bowyer attend AZGOP Robert Graham’s pancake breakfast for Maricopa County precinct committeemen Saturday morning?  Bowyer reportedly wasn’t even notified of the AZGOP social gathering for his Maricopa County PCs before it was publicized. How’s that for friendly relations???

·       Word Has It That AZGOP head shed occupants Chairman Robert Graham and sidekick Chad Heywood aren’t pleased that word leaked to Briefs about their  behind the scenes committee to sabotage the grassroots “Anyone but John McCain” resolution  slated for consideration at the Jan 23 AZGOP mandatory meeting in Phoenix. A similar resolution has been submitted for consideration for the Jan 16 Maricopa County GOP mandatory meeting.

·       Graham And Heywood probably weren’t even around, nor would remember,  that Briefs originated over a decade ago because a group of former LD4 power players --  Lyle Tuttle, Keith Morrow, Jan Martinson, Jane Schutte, Dan Nichols, Robert Burges and a host of others -- were less than happy with the lack of open communications from AZGOP headquarters,  except when the GOP establishment folks wanted boots on the ground to get their favorite candidates elected. – Editor Frosty Taylor

·       Maricopa County Grassroots PCs wishing to help co-sponsor the “Anyone But John McCain” resolution that has been submitted to the MCRC Resolutions Committee for consideration during the Jan 16, 2016 Maricopa County Republican Mandatory meeting -- should email calconserve@gmail.com ASAP with their name, precinct, and email address, to receive a copy of the proposed MCRC resolution for review before making a commitment.  Well over 100 MCRC PCs co-sponsor have signed on. More PCs are stepping forward as they become aware of it. See full story 11-30-15-briefs

·       The Western Pinal County Chapter of The Arizona Republican Assembly will meet at 6:30 PM on Mon, Dec 14 (doors open at 6pm).  This meeting will be held at a new location,  408 N. Sacaton St. Ste. II, Casa Grande, AZ. The building is on the southeast corner of W Florence Blvd. and N Sacaton St. Speaker:  David Gowan, Congressional Candidate for Arizona's CD1. Contact:  Jason Hayes - Secretary, Western Pinal County Chapter Arizona Republican Assembly  202-394-7202   wpcc.azra@gmail.com / jason@jasonhayes.org

·       CD1 Candidate And Speaker Of The House David Gowan was first elected to the Arizona House of Representatives in 2009. He resides in Sierra Vista in Legislative District 14, which encompasses all of Cochise County, all of Greenlee County, most of Graham County, and the Eastside of Pima County. Prior to serving as the Speaker of the House, Gowan served as the House Majority Leader for two years and Chairman of the House Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee.  Since first being elected, David has been involved in turning a $3 Billion deficit into a surplus, passing the Arizona Jobs Bill to attract new employers/jobs, and refilling the Rainy Day Fund that Governor Napolitano drained.  His priorities always focus on limiting government and promoting individual responsibility. He is a graduate of the University of Arizona, holding a B.A. in Secondary Education/Social Studies. He has been married to his wife Jessica for 19 years, and they have two sons. Originally hailing from Northern California, they have lived in Southeastern Arizona since 1993.

·       Tom Morrissey, Immediate Past Chairman AZ GOP: Sheriff Joe has taken a True Grit stand when he said that those of us who carry weapons have the ability to be a factor against a terrorist or other mass-shooter.  As a retired law enforcement officer I applaud the Sheriff for having the guts to say this.  Of course, those on the other side of the issue, who claim to speak for most law enforcement officers take the opposing view.  They claim that having us invoke our second amendment rights could cause "collateral damage" and chaos if we were to take action against such a shooter.  Take it from me, they are not speaking for most law enforcement because most of those that I know think along the lines of Sheriff Arpaio. Why should we not resist this compulsion of "those who know better than we" to turn us into a nation of sheep?  We did not come to be the greatest country in the history of mankind by acting like a bunch of pansies, cowering before our enemies. A Japanese admiral was asked at the end of World War II why they didn't invade the US after Pearl Harbor.  His answer was, "because we knew that everyone in America had guns."  Need more be said?

·       Former Arizona Attorney General Bob Corbin: Thanks Frosty for the article about our office. We sure had a great group of people and I sure miss them. See 12-3-15-briefs  regarding the 1990 passage of the Victims Rights bill in Arizona.

·        AZGOP Compliance Officer Timothy Lee:  I have been saying this since the day the Earthquake and Tsunami hit Japan in 2011. All that poisonous gas floated over the West Coast and western Deserts and settled into the dust. Then, we have had that dust blowing every which way in huge Haboob’s every Summer since the 2011 Nuclear accident in Japan. What have we already been exposed to through the dust and ground waters? ·       Congressman Paul A. Gosar after the House passed the Conference Report for H.R. 22: Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act of 2015 which included the Congressman’s Intermountain West Corridor Development Act, H.R. 1612: “Arizonans throughout the state should be proud that the U.S. southwestern region continues to be one of the fastest growing areas for economic development in the entire country. However, this rapid growth of industry requires an updated infrastructure system to accommodate the increasing volume of transportation. For this reason, I have continued to lead the charge on I-11. Extending I-11 and allowing it to become the main transportation corridor in the West will be an economic boon for our communities, creating jobs, allowing for an easier flow of goods and services and authorizing the construction of much needed infrastructure. America has some significant transportation challenges. Getting I-11 built is just commonsense and the associated economic benefits will help future Arizona generations indefinitely.”  House Passes Gosar Bill to Expand I-11

·       Yavapai County Republican Party Activist and Prescott businessman David Stringer has announced his candidate for LD1 AZ House of  Representatives. Stringer has owned and operated the Comfort Inn on White Spar Road in Prescott since 2004, and he has been active in local civic and political affairs as a Republican Precinct Committeeman and State Committeeman for the Yavapai County Republican Party.  He currently serves as co-chairman of the Yavapai County Republican Party Finance Committee.

Stringer promised to protect the taxpayers and families of the district, provide an effective voice for a district that largely consists of Yavapai County and the Anthem community in Maricopa County, defend the Arizona and U.S. Constitutions, and work to enhance Arizona¹s economy, with special emphasis on rural counties. His legislative priorities include increased employment, fighting illegal immigration, expanded school choice, state pension reform, improved transportation infrastructure, and a balanced approach to economic development that protects rural Arizona¹s lands and quality of life. “With the sheer number of Maricopa County legislators already in the Arizona Legislature, districts like ours need Representatives who can work together to be effective in terms of generating real results.” said Stringer.

Stringer earned his reputation as a taxpayer advocate when, as General Counsel for the Citizen¹s Tax Committee, he helped spearhead the campaign that defeated the 2013 PUSD school bond and budget override. He also founded the Yavapai County Tax Committee, helped organize the campaign to defeat the jail district sales tax in 2014, and served as the public spokesman for the campaign opposing higher city sales taxes to fund the state¹s troubled public safety pension system.

Stringer also pointed out that while he had successfully defeated untimely measures, he also supported a recent PUSD budget override that was responsible and good for local education. Contact: Communications Director Matthew Perry at (928) 830-6115.

·       More About LD1 House Candidate David Stringer:  Stringer is a member of the Arizona Bar Association, the Yavapai County Bar Association, the Goldwater Institute, and the Federalist Society.  He resides in the Historic District of downtown Prescott.  He is the former President of the Prescott Area Lodging Association and has served on the Mayor¹s Tourism Advisory Committee.  He was a founding Board Member of the Prescott Area Women¹s Shelter and has served on the Board of Yavapai Big Brothers and Big  Sisters.  He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Sharlot Hall Museum and Prescott Historical Society.  For the past two years he has served as a Commissioner on the Prescott Planning and Zoning Commission.

He is a graduate of George Washington University and the University of Baltimore School of Law.  He is also currently enrolled in a graduate program at ASU, working to earn a Masters Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language.

The campaign team consists of Campaign Manager Sharon Walter, Treasurer John Stevens and Matthew Perry as Communications Director (928) 830-6115  .

·        Arizona Congressman Matt Salmon, Trent Franks, Ruben Gallego, Raúl Grijalva , Ann Kirkpatrick, Martha McSally), David Schweikert and Kyrsten Sinema today sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to get answers as to why the U.S. Forest Service has not followed up on plans to consult with Arizonans on a successful management plan for the Salt River Horses. They wrote: “Our government is a government by, of, and for the people.  When the Forest Service decided to round up a valuable local resource, the people’s outcry forced it to halt its plans and promise to consult with our constituents.  Sadly, it appears the Forest Service is treating this consultation as a token effort, as no new management plan has been introduced.  As we quickly approach the deadline for action, we want to reiterate our calls for the Forest Service to consult with the people directly affected by their actions before implementing any plan.”  Background: In August, the Arizona congressional delegation wrote to Secretary Vilsack to urge consultation with constituents before a misguided effort to round up the Salt River Horses.  The Forest Service subsequently announced plans to halt the round-up for 120 days and consult with stakeholders.  With the delay’s deadline approaching, the consultations have yielded no fruit.

·       The Arizona Game and Fish Department swapped approximately 800 old and tattered life jackets with new ones during life jacket exchange events at area lakes this past summer. During the popular events, the public can swap old, less-effective life jackets for new ones. The department began the life jacket exchange program in 2008 to help save lives and to encourage watercraft users to remain safe on the water. “Wearing a life jacket is the most effective way to prevent against drowning,” said Josh Hoffman, AZGFD Boating Safety Education Program coordinator. “However, after a few years in Arizona’s hot dry climate, a life jacket’s effectiveness is drastically reduced. That’s why it’s important to replace your life jacket every three to five years to make sure it will not fail when you need it most.”

·       “President Barack Obama said his decision to send more U.S. special forces to combat Islamic State in Iraq is not an indication that the United States is headed for another invasion like the one in 2003 that locked it in a long, violent conflict. Obama has said his strategy to fight the militant group in Iraq and Syria does not include U.S. ground combat troops, but this week, the Pentagon announced it would send a new force of special operations troops. "When I said no boots on the ground, I think the American people understood generally that we're not going to do an Iraq-style invasion of Iraq or Syria with battalions that are moving across the desert," he said in an interview with CBS that aired on Thursday. "But what I've been very clear about is that we are going to systematically squeeze and ultimately destroy ISIL and that requires us having a military component to that," Obama added, using a common acronym for the militants. The interview was taped on Wednesday.” Read more
