Condolences To The Family Of LD-25 PC Paul Ray Millet who passed away on Mon., Feb 22, according to LD25 Chairman Ian Murray. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday February 27 at 12:30 PM at the LDS Church Building 1249 S. 48th St Mesa AZ. Contact Murray (602)524-7786.

Congressman Matt Salmon announced yesterday that he will not seek reelection to the United States House of Representatives in 2016. “When I returned to the House of Representatives in 2013, the President’s disastrous policies were putting our nation at risk, both at home and abroad.  Over the past three years, I’ve worked to curtail the largest expansion of peacetime spending in America’s history by working with members from both sides of the aisle.  This is something to be proud of. But the most important job I have is that of husband and father, and over the years I’ve missed far too many opportunities to spend time with my family.  I truly believe that they should come first in my life, and after much soul-searching I’ve decided against running for reelection.  I give you my word, won’t be stopping my fight for our nation’s future, but I will be continuing it as a constituent in the Valley of the Sun.  It has been an honor serving the constituents of Arizona’s Fifth District and I look forward to seeing you back home in Arizona.” Also See: Why I'm Leaving Congress

Arizona Senate President Andy Biggs announced yesterday that he will run for Arizona’s 5th Congressional District. Biggs, a 25-year Gilbert resident, made the announcement following U.S. Representative Matt Salmon’s announcement that he is retiring. “I never envisioned running for Congress, but Matt’s decision to return home leaves a void that must be filled by the kind of strong, conservative voice that the people of Arizona’s 5th District have come to expect and that they deserve,” Biggs said. “As a state legislator, and as Senate President, I have consistently demonstrated my ability to be a conservative leader who can build the necessary coalitions to pass meaningful reforms. I am ready to take my proven 14-year record to Washington and be that strong conservative voice for the East Valley.”
President Biggs campaign for Arizona’s 5th Congressional District will focus on the following principles:

· Fighting day and night to restore limited government, fiscal responsibility and pro-growth economic policies to the nation’s capitol;

· Protecting the nation’s porous borders and working to solve the illegal immigration crisis;

· Pledging to be a passionate advocate for the heroes who made enormous sacrifices while serving our nation proudly, as well as the men and women who wear a uniform today and defend our homeland.

· “I am excited and grateful to kick-off my campaign with Matt as my Chairman....”

CD5 Candidate Andy Biggs is an Arizona native and has lived in Gilbert with his family for the past 25 years. Biggs and his wife Cindy have six children. He is a retired attorney and is licensed to practice in Arizona, Washington, and New Mexico. Biggs has a bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies from BYU and a J.D. degree from the University of Arizona. He earned a M.A. in Political Science from ASU and has done additional graduate work there. Biggs served Legislative District 22 in the State House of Representatives for eight years before being elected to the State Senate in November of 2010. He has earned the designation “Champion of the Taxpayer” from Americans for Prosperity for his cumulative service in the state legislature and has been honored numerous times by the Goldwater Institute as a “Friend of Liberty.

Yesterday afternoon AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham thanked Congressman Matt Salmon of Mesa for his public service as he announced he would not seek re-election to Congress this fall. Salmon also served as chairman of the Arizona Republican Party from 2005 to 2007. “Matt’s been a solid state legislator, a great state party chairman, an incredibly hard worker in Congress, and a good friend for many years -- I am proud of his service and many accomplishments during his time in office,” said Graham. “He has left big shoes to fill, but it's a district that is solidly Republican and I’m going to do my best to keep it that way."

160225-1105 - AzRRT Special Legislative Report By Jose Borrajero The following bills have been changed substantially from their original form:

HB2088 Via amendments, this bill has suffered a partial testiculectomy, making it not nearly as good as the original

SB1351 The amended Lesko version that came out of COW does the exact opposite of the original bill.

Other significant bills saw action this week as follows:

HB2219 Right to work. This bill would have allowed lawyers to practice without having to join the SBA union. The following Republican representatives joined the Democrats in defeating it: Fann, Townsend, Brophy-McGee, Coleman, Pratt, Robson.

SB1017 This bill would have prohibited city services cards to be used as identification, as in voter registration. The following Republican senators joined Democrats in defeating it: Pierce, Yarbrough, Driggs, Worsley.

SB1378 This bill would have prohibited certain money transfers to cities that engage in sanctuary city activity. Republicans voting against were: Pierce, Driggs, Begay, Worsley.

SB1416 This bill covers a lot of issues, but it also transfers most of the power of the duly elected Superintendent of Public Instruction to unelected and unaccountable appointed bureaucrats. The following senators voted in favor of the only elected member of the state school board (voted against bill): Donahe, Farnsworth, Shooter, Burges, Smith.

US Sen Kelli Ward: Once again, we are seeing two John McCains — one who is a tough conservative during campaign season and one who gives in to liberal Democrats once he's back in DC. His views on Guantanamo Bay are just the latest example. Today, he's talking tough against President Obama's ill-conceived and dangerous plan to close Guantanamo Bay, even saying he'd support a lawsuit against the president to keep it open. But the truth is he's been a long-time critic of keeping it open and, just over a year ago, was ready to partner with Obama to shut it down. Arizonans deserve the same senator in DC that they get back home — John McCain isn’t that senator. While President Obama tries to cement a legacy rooted in political ideology, Washington insiders like John McCain will just stand by, just as he was ready to do in 2014, and ignore the will of the American people. John McCain can’t hide from his long-held views just because it’s campaign season — Arizonans deserve better. Kelli Ward

Most Voters Still Say No to Closing Guantanamo President Obama this week renewed his effort to close the prison camp for suspected terrorists at the U.S. Guantanamo Naval Base in Cuba. Most voters still oppose that idea, don't want the prisoners being jailed here and think the ones that have been released already are again a threat to the United States. Read More

Congressman Paul A. Gosar after the Center for Regulatory Solutions (CRS), a project of the Small Business Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council), published a new report detailing the economic impact of the EPA’s new lower federal ozone standard: “In late October, the EPA once again moved the goal posts by unilaterally publishing a fundamentally-flawed new regulation that dramatically lowered the ozone standard for communities throughout the nation. This blatant overreach, not based on the best available science, will kill tens of thousands of jobs annually and cause more harm to our economy than any regulation in the history of this great country. Furthermore, it is laughable that the EPA admits it does not have a clear plan for dealing with background ozone generated by factors outside the state’s control. This means the EPA is literally attempting to punish Arizona for ozone pollution that is created in California, Mexico and even China. This out-of-control agency, under the leadership of President Obama, continues its lawless, ideological attack on energy producers in order to further its own control over the lives of every American. I applaud the Center for Regulatory Solutions for their work on this issue and for exposing the significant economic harm that will occur in Arizona as a result of EPA’s terrible new regulation.”
