Republican Briefs

Dewit: Arizona 'Run Like A Mini Doughtatorship' …On Monday, Arizona Treasurer Jeff DeWit visited Tucson to discuss his opposition to Proposition 123. DeWit has been very vocal in his opposition to the education funding scheme pushed by Governor Doug Ducey….“I have spoken with every Republican group in the state. The grassroots conservatives and the rank and file Republicans they are opposed to this,” stated DeWit. “They are adamantly opposed to this. They know this is not a conservative thing to do and they are mad with their own members who voted on this. So they know it is a bad gig. But at the Capitol there is favor factory mentality down there. You scratch my back I’ll scratch yours. It is honestly run like a mini Dougtatorship.”

Donald Trump Cruised to a convincing victory in his home state of New York on Tuesday, moving closer to the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the GOP presidential nomination before the Republican National Convention…” Read the full story here

A Reader Quipped, “McCain Can’t Afford Graham’s $4,000 Convention Fee”, when forwarding a story that Sen John McCain will probably skip the July 18 GOP National Convention in Cleveland. Our senior senator, who hasn’t missed a National Convention in 30 years, thinks it’s too close to the Aug 30 Arizona Primary and he needs to stay in Arizona to campaign. john-mccain-to skip-republican-national-convention shows as interesting history of McCain’s convention speeches.

The Fountain Hills Republican Club announces its summer schedule:

  • May 21 - legislative session recap featuring all three LD 23 legislators, Sen John Kavanagh, Reps Michelle Ugenti-Rita and Representative Jay Lawrence
  • June 18 – Speaker County Attorney Bill Montgomery
  • July 16 – Speaker County Recorder Helen Purcel addressing election procedures.
  • Sept 20th – Annual picnic. All candidates are invited to the picnic.

All candidates are invited to attend any and all FHRC meetings and will be recognized and allowed to speak.

It Is Interesting To Note that the Fountain Hills Republican Club welcomes all candidates to attend and speak at their meetings. Candidates have reported that some LD Chairman/Club Chairmen are refusing to acknowledge their presence or allow them introduce themselves at various meetings. What happened to welcoming all registered Republican into the tent??? Common courtesy would allow candidates to at least stand up and introduce themselves. However, it doesn’t mean they can ramble on and on and on if they aren’t on the agenda.

What’s With All The Republican Secrecy? House Speaker David Gowan bans the media from the floor to the balcony. A couple of CD1 candidates have shut the door in the face of the media. republican-primary-opponents-why-hide-from the media AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham frequently fails to respond to phone calls/ e-mail questions – if the issue isn’t to his benefit.

Does The AZGOP Prefer To Allow Rumors to circulate instead of providing answers (to questions) that could calm the waters? The latest reply Briefs got from AZGOP Communications Director Tim Sifert, reads: “Please send any inquiries about the state party to the state party.” Huh? That’s the answer to an inquiry???

Stonewalling: …“delay or block (a request, process, or person) by refusing to answer questions or by giving evasive replies, especially in politics.” - Goggle

Senate President Andy Biggs has signed the American’s For Tax Reform’s Taxpayers Protection Pledge, saying "Tax Day is arguably one of the most dreaded days of the year. The convoluted IRS tax code has turned into a profitable industry for accountants and a quagmire for checkbooks across the country. Tax day also reminds each and every taxpayer how painful it is to see so much of their hard-earned money go to a bloated and costly government. I’ve always believed that hard-working Arizonans should get the most out of their paychecks.”…

Congresswoman Martha McSally, Chairwoman of the Border and Maritime Security Subcommittee, led a hearing yesterday on inadequate staffing levels and outdated infrastructure at our border ports of entry. During the hearing, a top Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official confirmed the Douglas Port of Entry is a top infrastructure priority for the Administration and that it would be included in CBP’s five-year infrastructure plan. “As you know, the Douglas Port of Entry has needed modernization for many years,” McSally said. “From our perspective it has tremendous shortfalls and limitations to it. We have struggled to find the financing. Where is the Douglas Port of Entry on the prioritization list?” See McSally hearing

Dems Are Reporting that days after a poll showed Sen John McCain and Sen Ann Kirkpatrick (D) neck and neck, Politico uncovered that a McCain Super PAC raised almost a half-million dollars. “McCain’s cronies are seeing the same polling we’re seeing. They know that Ann’s gaining momentum every day. And they know if McCain’s gone, their special treatment is gone too. It is no secret that McCain is vulnerable. As he is fighting to hold onto his political career, his special interest allies will throw as much cash as they can into propping him up. If we want to defeat McCain, our grassroots effort must be stronger than ever,” a Kirkpatrick message reads.

Sen John McCain’s campaign has launched digital ads reminding folks of Ann Kirkpatrick’s tax record. "After a decade in office, Democrat Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick's only record of accomplishment is raising taxes on Arizona families," said Communications Director Lorna Romero. "Her unwavering support of President Obama and the liberal establishment has caused Arizonans to send more of their hard-earned dollars to Washington D.C. Democrat Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick continues to tout Obamacare as her 'proudest vote' showing how out of touch she is with the priorities and values of Arizona."

UPDATE ON AZGOP STATE Convention

AZGOP to the Candidates for Republican National Convention Delegate: Congratulations on qualifying for the ballot for the April 30th election! The ballots have gone to the printer and we're looking forward to seeing you and all of our fellow Republicans to elect our national delegates. A few updates:

National delegate cost revision: As you may have seen on our website, we have revised the initial cost estimates for national delegates provided by the RNC back in September, and based on the incredible interest in the national process we're now seeing that $3,500 to $4,000 is a better estimate based on the expected flight costs and hotel costs. This is advice we are getting from the RNC and seeing from other state parties, as well as the consultants who are putting on our delegation events in Cleveland.

For comparison purposes, the California Republican Party is estimating delegate costs from $3,000 to $6,000 with a $900 participation fee, and New Mexico GOP has pegged their delegate cost at $5,000.

Here in Arizona, a first payment of $1,000, as part of the $4,000 estimate, has to be made to the AZGOP immediately after the election on April 30th. All of this amount applies toward delegation expenses: transportation within Cleveland, breakfasts, brunch, lunches, dinner events, entertainment and hospitality.

Delegates are free to shop their own hotel and lodging pricing, but we're simply passing on to you the estimates we have based on prior experience.  As of now the estimated hotel charge alone is about $1,500.

Regarding eligibility and nominations: We received nearly one thousand nominations for the 55 delegate positions and 55 alternates, and close to 250 were deemed ineligible because their submissions were missing information or were duplicates. We made calls to all of them and corrected more than 215 submissions, leaving just 31 ineligible. We made attempts to reach them all by emails and voicemail. After removing the duplicates and those who withdrew (not more than 15), the list now stands at 742 approved candidates, and 31 ineligible -- those who didn't provide us the required information despite multiple calls and emails.

Out of these 742 approved candidates, 604 selected to be on both ballots. At all times candidates were able to decide for themselves to stand for election in either their CD election, at-large election, or both.

We'll keep you up to date via email, but please feel free to call 602-957-7770 with any questions.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus: “With record numbers of voters viewing Hillary Clinton unfavorably, New York Democrats moved their least electable candidate a little closer to the finish line. Whether it’s her refusal to release the transcripts of her paid Wall Street speeches, her secret email server that’s triggered an ongoing FBI investigation, or her flip flops on issue after issue, Hillary Clinton has shown herself unwilling to be open and honest with the American people. Too much is at stake in this country to turn it over to someone as dishonest and unethical as she is. Voters are looking for a new direction after eight years of failure from President Obama, but the paths Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are offering would only drive our country further into the ditch. We can’t afford four more years of stagnant wages, mounting debt, and a lead-from-behind foreign policy. Only a Republican president will get America back on track by strengthening our economy and restoring America’s leadership role in the world.”
