4-22-16 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor - Frosty Taylor or   Web Master John Strasser

Historian/Lecturer Carl Goldberg: “Today, I received a letter from Robert Graham of the Arizona Republican Party asking for money. Instead of sending them money, I used their postage-paid return envelope to send Robert Graham the following letter. I urge you to do something similar.

Dear Bob, In today’s mail I received your letter asking for money. I must tell you that, until the Arizona Republican Party takes a strong and unequivocal stand against the Muslim Brotherhood, you will get no money from me or my friends. In addition, in my presentations about Islam as ideology, I will encourage my listeners to demand that all Republican candidates declare their stand on the Muslim Brotherhood before they are given support. A few months back, Senator Ted Cruz introduced the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation act in the Senate So far, only three Republicans have publicly supported it. Why aren’t the other 51 Republicans supporting it? Why isn’t the Arizona GOP demanding that Senators McCain and Flake support that crucially important bill??? I urge you to read John Guandolo’s excellent book, “Raising a Jihadi GenerationUnderstanding the Muslim Brotherhood Movement in America.” The Muslim Brotherhood is America’s greatest enemy, and the Republican Party has, at best been AWOL on the issue, and, at worst, has been actively aiding the Muslim Brotherhood both at home and abroad. If the GOP does not save us from the Islamic threat, no one will.” Goldberg is a historian (PhD in Russian history) who has devoted over 13 years to intense study of the Quran, the Haddith, and the writings of Islamic scholars and Imams

The Republican National Committee's Rules Committee chose to punt on changing rules for how a presidential nominee is chosen. In avoiding a high-profile battle to simplify the rules, the committee rallied behind chairman Reince Priebus's repeated insistence that no changes should be made before the July convention. The committee adjourned just one hour after it began without making any changes, including one that could have made it more difficult for party leaders to nominate a "white knight" candidate — one who is not in the race currently. full story here

Watchdog Sues GOP 'Party Hacks' Over Delegate Fight: Most races to be political-party nominees for president in recent years have been decided before summertime conventions, with one clear leader. This year that isn't happening, and it's bringing up a whole host of new issues, including how the party establishment may handle picking that ultimate nominee. One activist lawyer says the voters need to decide, and now he has sued the Florida state and national Republican parties over what he charges has been a developing plan by "insiders" to "manipulate ... the election system to end up with a candidate that fits their own political and financial agendas." The complaint was filed by attorney Larry Klayman, founder of both Judicial Watch and the newer Freedom Watch, in Leon County Circuit Court in his home state of Florida. He explains in the complaint that he wants the party to support the candidate the voters pick. Continue Reading...

Scottsdale veteran Josh Wolosonovich is asking for help in a “Operation Nine Line: New Trails” fundraiser for a five day, 75 mile hike in the Colorado Mountains in June for veterans between June 27- July in which 75 people from around the country will participate in  the backpacking journeys that will test all participants mentally, spiritually, and physically. Their purpose is to raise awareness of all the various physical, mental and emotional needs of the nation’s veterans and help make an impact on the toll these injuries (including the hidden ones) have on them and their families. “Nine Line” is a combat emergency medevac request, and is often the difference between life and death for the most severely wounded soldiers. Arizona-Attorney-General-Accused-Of-Evidence-Tampering …“This week, papers were filed with the Arizona Supreme Court alleging that Arizona’s Attorney General Mark Brnovich has tampered with evidence in criminal investigation of attorneys with the Snell and Wilmer law firm and victim businessman Will Graven. According to the filing, “AG Brnovich, to insure that Pinal County would support his (Brnovich) claims that there was insufficient evidence to take the Snell & Wilmer Case to the State Grand Jury, has tampered with the materials/evidence that he transferred to Pinal County…in fact, he has not sent the “entire criminal file,” he has withheld key evidence.”

State-Grand-Jury-Review-Sought-In-AZ-AG-Snell-And-Wilmer-Investigation A Peremptory Writ of Mandamus has been filed with the Arizona Supreme Court asking that the Arizona Attorney General’s Office present the results of investigations into the actions of attorneys with the Snell and Wilmer law firm as well as several officials from the City of Victorville, California to a State Grand Jury. ag-can-do-it-sundays-comic Briefs alerted readers to this investigation in mid-March. –ft

U.S. Suicide Rate Rises, Especially For Middle-Aged White Women The U.S. suicide rate has increased sharply since the turn of the century, federal data shows. The statistics also point to an alarming jump in suffocation — mostly hangings — as a suicide method. Read more »

Congressman Trent Franks: “Many of you have reached out to our office by phone, email, letters, and on social media to express your mistrust of Washington and your dissatisfaction with the seemingly constant gridlock in Congress. I couldn’t agree with you more that this is a serious problem. What you may not know is the Senate’s abuse of the filibuster is, at least partly, to blame. In January, I wrote an op-ed about this problem and the way to break the stranglehold on progress”. See ending-the-stealth-filibuster

MCRC Member-at-Large/LD20 2 VC Wes Harris: Since taking office Supt of Public Instruction Diane Douglas has been attacked by the Governor's Office, the un-elected State Board of Education and ignored by the Attorney General, all of which has stymied her attempts to get Common Core thrown out of our State supported schools. Because of you volunteers she has been able to accomplish some of the things we want done.  She needs more help in high places. We have 15 County Superintendents of Schools whose job is to distribute funds to their school districts and appoint people to school board vacancies. They can help the State Superintendent but few do. To my knowledge, incumbent Don Covey has not lifted a finger to help, but he appoints virtually only Teacher Union Democrats to fill open positions, completely ignoring his so called 'Republican Roots'.

The Legislature is no help; lead by Sen Debbie Lesko and Rep Paul Boyer, they tried three time this session to strip Douglas of her constitutional and statutory powers.  We beat them back but the budget has not yet been approved and this could open up a way to get their dastardly deed done.

This leads to this next election.   It is time to replace incumbent Don Covey with someone who is only motivated by students, We the People, and promises to help Diane get rid of Common Core.  Her name is Dr. Jana Jackson, who teaches STEM at North High in Phoenix and has a staggering list of credentials that overly qualify her to fill the demands of this position.  See (still under construction)  and help obtain the necessary signatures to get her on the ballot before June 1.  Contact 602-432-2871 (c) 602-942-9281 (h) 602-942-5327 (f) to arrange for her to speak to your group.

Mark Mekler, Convention of States: Despite the fact that HCR 2010 was transmitted to the Senate on February 19th, Senator Andy Biggs has still not fulfilled his duty under the Senate Rules (Rule 2J) to assign it to a committee so that it can have a fair hearing and be voted on by the Senate. In a recent face-to-face meeting with a small group of Arizona citizens, Senator Biggs arrogantly stated that he would wait until the last 15 minutes of session to assign the resolution to a committee, thus ensuring that it will not have time to receive a vote. Friends, that is an outrage to every Arizonan, every American, who believes in the rule of law. This is the same kind of shenanigan that is pulled all the time in Washington, D.C., to the detriment of our great nation. We cannot stand by while it happens in Arizona. Maybe that's why Sen. Biggs has announced he's running for Congress.  Guess he'll fit right in with the games they play there.  Contact: 530-823-0568

A Petition Calling For The Resignation Of AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham started circulating in Arizona last week. See Demand-AZGOP-Chair-Robert-Grahams-Resignation Although some say Graham/McCain will do everything possible to prevent the petition from reaching the April 30 State Convention floor – as was done with the resolution calling for Graham’s resignation at the Jan 23 State Mandatory meeting -- it is a reminder to Graham that some grassroots folks are less than happy with him. And it certainly doesn’t look good for his attempt to chair the Republican National Committee (RNC). And speaking of the RNC Chair, the word is out the Mitt Romney’s daughter is also reaching for the same rung on the GOP ladder.

Congressman Trent Franks: Highlights from a busy first quarter in Washington, DC. -- Legislation passed that will help Arizonans:

· H.R. 3762 Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act – Passed House January 6th

· H.R. 1644 Supporting Transparency, Regulatory, and Environmental Actions in Mining Act – Passed House January 12th

· H.R. 757 North Korea Sanctions Enforcement Act – Passed House January 12th; Became Law February 18th

· H.R. 3700 Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act – Passed House February 2nd

· H.R. 3662 Iran Terror Finance Transparency Act – Passed House February 2nd

· H.R. 1675 Capital Markets Improvement Act – Passed House February 3rd

· H.R. 766 Financial Institution Customer Protection Act – Passed House February 4th

· H.R. 3293 Scientific Research in the National Interest Act – Passed House February 10th

· H.R. 3442 Debt Management and Fiscal Responsibility Act – Passed House February 11th

· H.R. 3716 Ensuring Access to Quality Medicaid Providers Act – Passed March 2nd

In another attempt to scale back the Affordable Care Act (ACA), I voted YES on H.R. 3762 Restoring Americans’ Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act which would dismantle the ACA and would prohibit taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers. The Senate passed the bill as well and we sent it to the President’s desk. Unfortunately the President vetoed this bill and it did not become law.

Congressman Trent Franks: In advance of the recent hearing on the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (HR 4924) which has 87 bipartisan cosponsors, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Rights, Franks, said, “The very bedrock foundation principle that gave birth to America in the first place was the conviction that all human beings are children of God and created equal in his sight. And, in so many ways, we have made great progress in the area of civil rights in this country. But there is one glaring exception. We have overlooked unborn children and that life itself is the most foundational of all civil rights. The terrifying result is that today, in America abortions are targeting unborn children for simply being the “wrong color” or the “wrong sex”. This is not who we are as Americans! Very simply, the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (HR 4924), restricts sex-selection, race-selection abortion, and the coercion of a woman to obtain either. When the subject is related in any way to abortion the doors of reason and human compassion in our minds and hearts often close and the humanity of the unborn can oftentimes no longer be seen. But this is the civil-rights struggle that will define our generation, and I hope this hearing today will begin to open our minds and hearts again.” Franks is serving his seventh term in the U.S. House of Representatives and is a member of the Judiciary Committee, where he serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution and a member of the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet. He is also a member of the Armed Services Committee, where he serves as Vice-Chairman of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, and Capabilities and a member of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee.

Sen John McCain has sent a letter to Acting Director of the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System raising concerns about allegations that managers and supervisors at the Tucson VA have been interfering in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Inspector General (IG) investigation into reports of poor care, unclean facilities and equipment, and whistleblower retaliation. McCain called for an IG investigation following reports of wrongdoing at the Tucson VA. McCain urges the Acting Director to immediately look into allegations of interference; take additional steps to ensure that direct management and supervisory staff at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System refrain from attending any IG interviews, depositions or debriefings of employees during the course of this investigation; and direct the IG to re-interview any employees who were interviewed in the presence of VA management.

Yesterday Rep. Matt Salmon (introduced the third bill in his newly-reintroduced Shrink our Spending Initiative to highlight and cut wasteful taxpayer-funded programs. Upon introduction of the latest bill, to eliminate funding for further National Science Foundation (NSF) studies on politically-induced stress, Salmon said: “Americans are very stressed, and who could blame them?  Our nation is drowning in debt, what is soon to be over $20 trillion of it, and our representatives in Congress refuse to deny the spending requests of any government freeloader.  In today’s example of government waste, the NSF spent nearly $150,000 last year for a researcher to uncover why social interactions about politics are stressful.  The worst part?  This study is duplicative because the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation had previously released a wide-ranging survey on this very topic.” In 2014, Salmon began a program to identify and cut wasteful spending government-wide, because he knew every federal department, office, and agency has wasteful spending within their budgets.  The program was called the “Shrink Our Spending” Initiative and aimed at finding $ 1.5 billion in wasteful spending.  In 2015, the initiative identified and cut over $3 billion in government waste.

Sen John McCain sent a letter to Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sylvia Burwell today raising concerns about the decision by the nation’s largest health insurer, UnitedHeath, to exit the failed Obamacare exchanges after incurring significant losses. McCain asks Secretary Burwell to address the impact this decision will have on consumers in Arizona, particularly the estimated 45,000 Arizonans who will now be forced to find new coverage. “UnitedHealth’s decision to exit the failed Obamacare exchanges in all but a ‘handful’ of states across the country, including Arizona, is clear indictment of the President’s disastrous health care law,” said McCain. “It’s critical that the Obama Administration answer to the estimated 45,000 Arizonans who will now be scrambling to find new coverage, as well as the rest of the state that may face even higher deductibles and premiums as a result of this decision.”

Congressman Matt Salmon has announced the Financial Literacy for Financial Aid Act, a bill which would improve the Department of Education’s entrance counseling requirements, as well as the information provided to students, before they take on student loan debt. “When entering freshmen are provided paperwork entitling them to borrow thousands of taxpayer dollars, study after study shows these students know little about the liability they are taking on with their signatures. Student loan debt has ballooned in recent years, and with roughly 40% of student borrowers not making payments on their federal student loans, the integrity of this program is at stake. Furthermore, the fact that these loans are backstopped by government insurance means taxpayers will ultimately be on the hook. Ensuring students are well-versed in basic financial literacy should be a priority before lending. My bill would make it so.”

Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas thoughts on a meeting the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) meeting in Washington, DC. “I was pleased to hear updates on the ongoing process to develop regulations that will ultimately shape how states implement ESSA,” said Douglas. “As the new law is put into practice here in Arizona, my hope is that federal education officials will honor Congress’ intent and give our state increased flexibility and control when making decisions about the education of our children.” ESSA, which represents the latest update to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), is scheduled to be implemented in the 2017-2018 school year. It will replace No Child Left Behind (NCLB) as the primary federal legislation addressing America’s public education system. “Arizonans must have a strong voice as these changes go into effect, so I look forward to hearing parent and stakeholder feedback on ESSA during my upcoming tour of the state. My team at the Department is diligently developing an implementation strategy and will incorporate the thoughts of our citizens to create a proposal that truly meets the needs of Arizona students.” The “We Are Listening Tour” will kick off on May 9 in Buckeye; continue throughout the year. In addition to gathering feedback on ESSA at each tour stop, the Superintendent also will be sharing updates on the progress of several proposals outlined in her AZ Kids Can’t Wait! Plan. The plan, which was released on Oct. 1, 2015, resulted from comments collected during last year’s We Are Listening Tour.

Senate President Pro Tempore Sylvia Tenney Allen: Huge Gains For All Of Arizona Students Are The Result Of A Great Education Environment - The results of the 2015 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), the gold standard of educational measurement:

  1. 8th grade African American students placed 1st in the nation in math in 2015 up from 8th in 2011.
  2. 8th grade Hispanic students achieved the 3rd highest math gains in the nation to place 11th in the nation, up from 35th in 2011.
  3. Overall, Arizona 8th grade students achieved the 2nd highest math gains in the country.

The NAEP test results were first reported in October 2015 and we are now becoming aware of the huge gains that key demographic groups have made. We hear far too often that Arizona is failing its students and how we are failing minority students. The facts do not support this conclusion.

Our teachers and school leaders deserve a huge round of applause. They are pushing our students to reach these amazing outcomes. Educational policy environment: We have a wide range of educational options and choice. Parents have the ability to choose the best school environment. The policies have started to yield strong results.

Next time you see that Arizona public education ranks 50th, know that is not true. It is the education establishment replaying the same talking points.  We can be proud of our school system.

Adequately and responsibly funding our schools will always be a priority, but we must be sure that we do not force our schools to adopt a one-size fits all approach to education and allow our system of choice to continue to innovate and flourish. I am excited about the ongoing process of adopting new Arizona academic standards to hold high expectations that are developmentally appropriate and under Arizona control. We are still on the rise and there is still much to do, but I will be one of those screaming from the rooftop about the amazing opportunities for students in Arizona.
