4-29-16 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor - Frosty Taylor repcomm@cox.net or frostytaylor@cox.net   Web Master John Strasser

Hundreds Of Arizona Republicans will converge upon the Mesa Convention Center tomorrow morning to elect a national committee woman and national committeeman and select the delegates to go to the National Convention in July in Cleveland. Nerves are on edge because many delegates/alternates didn’t receive their call letter or agenda, the prohibitive national delegate fees, and the behind the scenes game playing. It’s no secret that there is much frustration over lack of communication, not receiving call letters, the competition between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz camps over delegate loyalties, and the desire by a number of precinct committeemen to obtain Chairman Robert Graham’s resignation, --- the list goes on and on. People have not forgotten the incidents that happened at the January 2015 and 2016 Mandatory meetings. Ugly reports are coming in about misguided behavior outside a rally  in California yesterday. All hell broke loose. Traffic was blocked, rocks were thrown, people were injured and police cars damaged. People/groups can disagree without violence, injuries and destruction. We don’t need similar headlines in Arizona. Let’s hope common sense prevails throughout the Arizona Convention. Let’s show the nation that Arizona  conducts meetings/rallies/protests/conventions in a calm, rational manner. – Editor Frosty Taylor

An “AZ Votes Matter” Rally for President candidate Donald Trump is scheduled at 8 am, Sat., April 30 outside the AZGOP Convention meeting, scheduled in the Mesa Convention Center, 263 N Center St., Mesa. az-votes-matter-rally-saturday-april-30

The Demand-AZGOP-Chair-Robert-Graham-Resignation petition site has some 342 very interesting comments as of 1 am this morning.

National Delegate candidate Tom Morrissey: I am running for Delegate to the National Convention as a YUGE and staunchly dedicated supporter of Donald Trump.  I love the fact that the Establishment Elite hate this man and I therefore want to remind you of the words of Senator Barry Goldwater, "You can judge a man by his enemies".   During my term as State Chairman, I was also hated by the Establishment Elite, but that did not stop me from getting the job done, and I know the same can be said about Donald Trump. I promise that I will support Donald Trump through every election round in Cleveland until he gets that well-deserved nomination.  This is based on my up close and personal experience with the Establishment Elite and subsequent understanding of the damage that they are doing to this country.  Damage, which I believe, Donald Trump will remedy and reverse, with great aplomb. Morrissey is the Immediate Past Chairman of the AZ GOP

Delegate At Large Candidate Senator Jack Harper: I have signed a pledge to vote for Donald Trump on every ballot at the National Republican Convention. My friend and former colleague, former State Sen Thayer Verschoor is the Assistant State Director for the Trump campaign in Arizona and vouched for me as incorruptible in my former public position.  Harper was the LD22 Senator (termed out) and a LD4 Representative before the redistricting.

National Republican Committeewoman candidate Lori Klein Corbin: I will stand up to the powers that be and stay true to our conservative values and principles of limited government. I have spent the past 40 years as part of the conservative movement which Reagan ushered in while President and served a term as an Arizona Senator. I plan to take a job as President of the Western Center for Journalism now headed by Floyd Brown beginning in June.  The center sponsors investigative journalists, training programs for young conservative journalists and internships along with many other free market, Christian conservative programs including a very good program at Arizona Christian University to advance liberty and integrity in journalism.  I will have time and resources to do the job as national committeewoman along with my other duties.  You can trust me to be your conservative voice!  I would be honored. Klein-Corbin is married to former Arizona Attorney General Robert K Corbin, who is also the past president of the National Rifle Association.

LD30 1st Vice Chair Timothy Schwartz: “As stories continue to roll in about how the Delegate elections were held in various districts, it seems there are a goodly number of people who wanted to become delegates but were shut out. Shut out because they had voiced support of one candidate over another. How sad. But it did not happen in LD30. We allowed people to get elected based on their own merit, not based on whether they choose Cruz, or Trump, or...We're not bragging, we just assumed that that would be the proper thing to do. I'll bet those from other LDs who didn't have a chance would likely agree. Our Chairman, Anna Stowe, has served with distinction. Enough said.”

LD23 PC Walt Franklin - LD 23 Proposed Resolution To Endorse: With approval of the new LD 23 bylaws, the district gave itself the right to adopt endorsements covering nearly every political candidate or issue imaginable. While having the implied authority or permission to take such action, special circumstances that exist within the boundaries of the district should give pause to how they choose to apply or use it. The PCS of LD 23 represent a broad variety of non-partisan local governmental entities: individual city and town governments; school, fire, police, sanitary and water districts to name a few. An endorsement by LD 23 to the benefit of any candidate or issue within these entities would not be appropriate since none of them are within the lawful voting authority of 100% of LD 23 pcs. As a resident of Fountain Hills, I have no dog in the fight at Scottsdale City Council, and, in turn, Scottsdale PCs have no legitimate voice in our town issues either.LD 23 has a legitimate voice in county, state and federal issues and may vote to make endorsements on those matters as is deemed appropriate. The introduction of Chicago Style political activity to the front steps of our schools is not only ill advised, but wrong. I call upon higher level party and state elected officials to encourage LD 23 to reconsider.

Roger Foster: Thanks to all who replied on my quest for info on Prop 124, & thanks to Frosty for posting the request. I have voted.

McCain-Fundraiser-Arrested-Meth-Lab-Bust-Phoenix A woman listed as the RSVP contact for U.S. Sen. John McCain's re-election fundraisers was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of drug charges after Maricopa County sheriff's deputies found an active meth lab and other illicit drugs while conducting a search warrant at her north-central Phoenix home, officials said. Secretary Michele Reagan’s work to transition the office from paper to pixels continues with the launch of a newly developed candidate filing system.  Beginning May 2, 2016 the Secretary of State’s office will implement 21st century methods for candidates who want to run for state or legislative office. One of the first of its kind, candidates for public office can file their political committees, nomination paperwork and financial disclosure statements with the Secretary of State’s office online.  Candidates have the opportunity to provide contact information, web address, a picture and biography. “We’re really excited to provide this innovative system that allows people to file and run for office without having to come to our office in person,” said S Reagan.  “From day one we’ve tried to make the Department of State more accessible to all Arizonans, not just those in the Phoenix metro area.  The implementation of this system marks off another item on our to-do list!”

The Candidate Filing Period runs from Monday, May 2, to Wednesday, June 1, 2016 for those running for office in the Tues., Aug 30, 2016 Primary Election. Early voting begins August 3.  The voter registration deadline to participate in the Primary is August 1. The Arizona Dems Party Took A Swipe At Republican Legislators Today with an e-mail that reads in part…”In stark contrast to how the Republicans in charge of our state negotiate a multi-billion dollar state budget -- in a backroom, in secret, away from public comment and scrutiny -- Arizona Democrats demonstrated yesterday how to discuss the state budget. Arizona Democrats invited members of the public, news organizations and advocacy groups to go through the details of the budget out in the open -- and ask important questions out in the open -- because there shouldn’t be anything to hide.Arizona Democrats displayed how a billion dollar budget should be discussed. Not in secret, not by a few select people, and not at the expense everyday Arizonans. We deserve better. We're only a few seats away from kicking these Republicans out of leadership and changing the balance of power in our state. Of course, it was part of a plea for campaign funds.

Dem Congressional candidate Dr Matt Heinz makes no bones about incumbent Republican Martha McSally “outraising” his fundraising. “The GOP establishment is going all in to re-elect McSally,” Heinz email reads.

The Same Republican Insiders who were once dead set against Donald Trump -- such as Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who once called Trump an "albatross" -- are suddenly singing a different tune, CNN's Manu Raju and Deirdre Walsh report. "I think he could change the electoral map in ways we haven't seen before," Cornyn said when asked whether he was worried about Trump's impact down ticket. "This disrupts the usual Republican vs. Democrat, conservative vs. liberal paradigm, and I think we don't know how this will all play out. I think it will be OK." He's not alone in accepting Trump as the GOP standard-bearer. "Many of us who have expressed concerns are reconciling ourselves to the fact that in all likelihood he will be the eventual nominee," said Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina. Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker called Trump's foreign policy speech earlier this week "very thoughtful" -- and the two spoke on the phone Thursday morning, Trump told a crowd in Evansville.

Border-Chief-Chides-Agents-Who Object-To Obama-Amnesty: ‘Look For Another Job’ The man who oversees the U.S. Border Patrol said Tuesday that if agents have a problem with President Obama’s deportation amnesty, they should quit. The strong remarks by Customs and Border Protection Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske came as tensions between Congress and the White House grew even higher, with House GOP leaders announcing they’ll hold an unprecedented vote to have their chamber join in the lawsuit trying to halt the amnesty.

Delegates-Turn-To-Web -To-Pay-Way-To-Conventions- Delegates can’t afford to go. Republicans and Democrats backing presidential nominees discover steep cost of attending this summer.

For-1-Key-Group-Trumps-Muslim-Ban-Is-Yuuge “…But there’s one massive group of people that overwhelmingly backs Trump’s proposal for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration: Republican primary voters.A poll taken soon after Trump announced his plan in December showed almost two-thirds of Republican voters supported the GOP front-runner’s plan to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. And as the votes are cast in state after state, support for Trump’s proposal is actually higher in some areas.”…

GOP Warms To Trump: Establishment Republicans are warming to the idea of Donald Trump as the GOP standard bearer. Two House Republican chairmen – Reps. Bill Shuster (Pa.) and Jeff Miller (Fla.) – announced their support for Trump on Thursday. And sources said more rank-and-file Republicans are expected to follow suit, including longtime Rep. Jimmy Duncan, Jr. (Tenn.). Furthermore, regular meetings between House lawmakers and top Trump aides, once sparsely attend, have suddenly become must-see events. Read the full story here

Scottsdale Veteran Josh Wolosonovich is asking for help in a “Operation Nine Line: New Trails” fundraiser for a five day, 75 mile hike in the Colorado Mountains in June for veterans between June 27- July in which 75 people from around the country will participate in  the backpacking journeys that will test all participants mentally, spiritually, and physically. Their purpose is to raise awareness of all the various physical, mental and emotional needs of the nation’s veterans and help make an impact on the toll these injuries (including the hidden ones) have on them and their families. “Nine Line” is a combat emergency medevac request, and is often the difference between life and death for the most severely wounded soldiers. Congressman Matt Salmon has introduced the fourth bill in his 2016 “Shrink our Spending Initiative” to highlight and cut wasteful taxpayer-funded programs. Upon introduction of the latest bill, to eliminate fraud from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) public housing programs, Salmon said: “The most vulnerable Americans suffer when programs designed to ensure a basic safety net are abused by free-loaders intent on mooching from the public treasury.  Instead of helping families in need, over $104 million was spent on 25,000 families who don’t qualify for free or reduced-cost housing.  This selfishness and lack of respect for those truly suffering must end by ensuring that HUD does its job protecting the vulnerable instead of doling out money to ineligible individuals in a misguided quest to advance extreme left-wing social policies.” Background: According to the HUD Inspector General report in July 2015, more than 25,000 families received subsidized public housing assistance despite exceeding maximum income thresholds. HUD IG found $104.4 million went to families not qualified for aid instead of those families actually in need. Meanwhile, HUD disagrees, stating that evicting over-income tenants would work against HUD’s objectives to “deconcentrate poverty in public housing developments.” Background on Rep. Salmon’s SOS Initiative: In 2014, Salmon began a program to identify and cut wasteful spending government-wide, because he knew every federal department, office, and agency has wasteful spending within their budgets.  The program was called the “Shrink Our Spending” Initiative and aimed at finding $ 1.5 billion in wasteful spending.  In 2015, the initiative identified and cut over $3 billion in government waste.

Congresswoman Martha McSally today introduced bipartisan legislation to help facilitate restoration projects on public lands, such as Saguaro National Park. The 21st Century Conservation Service Corps Act of 2016 enables federal agencies, like the National Park Service (NPS), to enter into partnerships with national service corps organizations to complete projects faster and at no additional cost to taxpayers. “In Arizona, natural beauty is all around us,” said McSally “The problem is that a backlog of needed restoration projects on our public lands is restricting access for Arizonans and tourists at our parks and public areas. Additional resources provided to reduce this backlog have failed to make a dent in it, which is why we need better solutions. My bill leverages existing resources in a smarter way to get these projects moving and ensure the public can once again fully enjoy our national parks. I thank Congressman Moulton for working with me on this legislation and look forward to working together to move it forward.” Today, restoration projects on public lands around the country are significantly backlogged, including $41.5 million in delayed or deferred projects in Arizona. Deferred or delayed maintenance projects at Saguaro National Park amounts to approximately $12.9 million, while Chiricahua National Monument in Cochise County faces roughly $10.3 million in need restoration projects. Under an executive order, federal agencies like the National Park Service are encouraged to partner with national service corps organizations to fill available positions on national service restoration projects. The 21st Century Conservation Service Corps Act of 2016 codifies this program under law and expands it to allow additional federal agencies to use corps volunteers to complete projects. Additionally, the bill streamlines the process in which private donations can be used for park reconstruction activities.  Enlisting corps to do priority work often has proved to be more cost-effective for federal agencies. A recent report showed that public-private partnerships saved the National Park Service more than $50,000 per project on average, with one project achieving savings of over $220,000.
