Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor  repcomm@cox.net Web Master John Strasser

"When the people fear the government there is tyranny.  When the government fears the people there is liberty."  Thomas Jefferson

During Last Night’s LD 23 Meeting, Chairman Jim O’Connor announced his candidacy for the Arizona Republican Party Chairmanship election to be held at the January 28, 2017 AZGOP Statutory meeting. “I am running to give AZGOP State Committeemen an opportunity to choose a Chairman who will incorporate the grassroots activists’ voices and ideas into the operation of our State Party. I intend to reopen the doors of party headquarters to Republican volunteers and take advantage of their willingness to offer their time, talents, and treasure to the party. I look to orchestrate a model of appropriate behavior from the top down.”

If given the opportunity to serve AZGOP members, O’Connor commits to holding monthly Zoom conference calls with all County Chairs, as well as face-to-face meetings once each quarter. “I pledge,” he said, “to build a more vibrant AZGOP on a foundation of trust, honor, respect, and adherence to party bylaws and the Republican Party Platform.” O’Connor has been active in our Republican politics for the past 10 years, having served two-year terms as a Member at Large for CD 5 and CD 6. He was elected Chairman of LD 23 in November 2014, and serves on the Executive Guidance Council of the Maricopa County Republican Committee. During this past year, O’Connor spearheaded the effort to renounce the National Popular Vote Compact legislation, which moved through the Arizona State House. As part of that continuing effort, he built a team to educate legislators and PCs statewide about the failings of this foolish idea. The compact, if passed, would subvert the will of the people of Arizona, by mandating that electoral votes go to the winner of the national popular vote, even if it differs from the actual Arizona result.

The most salient example of O’Connor’s effectiveness in building the party and motivating volunteers was his success in working with his district’s Precinct Captains and Area Directors to appoint 135 new Precinct Committeemen in LD 23. He encourages all newly elected Precinct Committeemen interested in voting in the statutory meeting election to place their names on their District or County ballots for the position of State Committeeman. Only State Committeemen are eligible to vote in the race for State Party Chairman.

During Wednesday Night’s MCRC Meeting, Chairman Tyler Bowyer introduced Liz Alcorn as the Chairman of the Lincoln Day dinner. Executive Director April Riggins announced the previous awards criteria would be used this year. Riggins requested that Briefs repost the awards selection criteria this year.

Maricopa County Republican Committee

Lincoln Day Dinner Awards Criteria

All awards are based on actions taken by prospective recipients in the year PRECEEDING the actual year that the Lincoln Day Dinner is held. Example: The 2017 Lincoln Lunch are given as the result of actions taken during CY2016.

One of the reasons that a Lincoln Day Dinner is held is to recognize the hard work of our Precinct Committeemen and honor them for their dedication and commitment under what are, sometimes, trying circumstances.

There are four (4) levels of awards:

1. CERTIFICATES OF ACHEIVEMENT – To be presented to precinct committeemen who have done an outstanding job during the previous year. These recipients are selected by the District. One Certificate will be awarded for every twenty-five (25) precinct committeemen, or major portion thereof, within the District. Maximum of eight (8) Certificates per District.

2. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD-- One (1) award to be presented to the most outstanding volunteer in each District.

3. THE LINCOLN BUST—To be presented to the one person selected by the Awards Committee to receive the County’s highest award. Only one (1) Lincoln Bust will be presented in the Area. Only one award will be made to an individual in a lifetime. The following criteria will apply:

A. Must be an elected Precinct Committeeman

B. Neither elected public officials nor current District Chairmen are eligible

C. Give priority for work done in the Precincts

D. Consider the number of years served as a Precinct Committeeman

E. Consider other party activities engaged in

F. Consider participation in Community and Civic Activities

G. Paid staff are not eligible for award

4. THE REAGAN PLAQUE—To be presented to a person meeting the same general criteria as the Lincoln Bust with the exception that the Reagan Award may be given to someone who has not yet exhibited a lifetime of service to the Party, and an individual may, conceivable, receive more than one Reagan Award in their lifetime.

Award nominations should be sent to Alcorn at Lizalcorn@ymail.com (ph 602-315-0349) no later than midnight Fri, Sept 30, 2016. A brief summary of why the nominee is being submitted is suggested i.e.  Volunteer work, offices held, years as a P.C. , etc.

“AS It Stands Today, 14 Of Arizona's 15 Counties will have a single – that’s one – a single health insurer to ‘shop’ for coverage when open enrollment begins on November 1st. That includes Maricopa County – Arizona’s most populous county – impacting more than 120,000 of my fellow citizens… The collapse of Obamacare in Arizona and across the country confirms what Republicans have warned all along: Government-mandated health care is unsustainable.” – Senator John McCain Speaking on Senate Floor

Hackers-Target-State-Voter-Databases-Are-They-Targeting-Personal-Information-Or-Intending-To-Tamper-With-Elections As a number of people know by now, the Cyber Crimes Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently released a Flash memorandum warning state Boards of Elections about recent hacks. The attacks appear to have targeted voter registration databases in Illinois and Arizona. Reports indicate that the attacks on Arizona’s database were unsuccessful, but that up to 200,000 Illinois voters may have had their personal information exposed as a result of the attacks.

Federal Regulators Say Wells Fargo employees secretly created more than a million of unauthorized bank and credit card accounts -- without their customers knowing it -- since 2011.The phony accounts enabled employees to boost their sales figures and make more money, Richard Cordray, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, said. The phony accounts also earned the bank unwarranted fees. Wells Fargo confirmed to CNNMoney that it had fired 5,300 employees related to the shady behavior.
