10-5-16 Briefs

Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor  repcomm@cox.net       Web Master John Strasser

Last Night, The Arizona Trump-Pence Campaign released the following statements of state leaders reacting to Governor Mike Pence’s victory in tonight’s Vice Presidential Debate held at Longwood University in Farmville, VA. “Mike Pence’s usual steady, deliberate presence clearly won the day, and his view of freedom and opportunity for all Americans stood in stark contrast to Tim Kaine’s vision of big government solutions. At the polls, Americans will vote for change and against a third Obama term of slow growth policies that continue to hurt the middle class and small business owners across the country.” – Former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer

Mike Pence was measured, thoughtful, and poised at tonight’s debate while outlining the clear difference between his vision of a more safe and prosperous nation and the Democrats’ desire for more of the same as advocated by Tim Kaine. Governor Pence showed millions of Americans why change is necessary following nearly a decade of higher taxes and unbridled spending that will be passed on to future generations. Voters in Arizona and across the country will vote for change in November.” – Congressman Trent Franks (R-AZ)

Who Won The VP Debate? In a CNN/ORC poll, 48% of viewers said it was Republican Mike Pence, and 42% chose Democrat Tim Kaine.

Yesterday, The No Prop 205.Com Campaign released its second TV ad, this time exposing what Prop 205 will mean for Arizona. The ad, entitled ‘Fine Print,’ highlights that money raised from marijuana taxes will not fund Arizona classrooms, instead, funding two new government agencies and a special marijuana police force. “Prop 205 means bigger government and more spending,” the ad states. “Do you really think the marijuana money will get to Arizona classrooms?” Prop 205 does not mean more money for classrooms, it means more marijuana in schools. Prop 205 is a sham and bad news for Arizonans.

CONGRESSIONAL STATEMENTS

300 word limit policy. If statements exceeds the limit,it will be edited.

US Sen John McCain, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on the USS John S. McCain and USS Frank Cable’s historic visit to Vietnam’s Cam Ranh Bay this week. The visit marks the first port call for two such U.S. warships at the Vietnamese naval base since the United States and Vietnam normalized relations: “I am deeply proud of the USS John S. McCain’s historic visit to Vietnam. “The ship’s visits to Cam Ranh Bay International Terminal and the naval port at Da Nang, as well as a series of at-sea exercise with the Vietnam People’s Navy, are further evidence of the growing strategic relationship between the United States and Vietnam. I am confident our two nations will continue to work together to strengthen open maritime commerce and maintain a balance of power that favors the rules-based order that underpins our shared security and prosperity. I look forward to again visiting Vietnam in the near future to further advance our growing economic and security relationship. More broadly, I hope the visit of the USS John S. McCain, a ship named for my father and grandfather who spent much of their Navy careers in the Asia-Pacific, will serve as a reminder to our allies and partners that America’s commitment to this region runs deep and remains enduring.”

LEGISLATIVE COMMENTARY

300 word limit policy. If statement exceeds the limit, it will be edited.

Senator Sylvia Tenney Allen - No On Prop 206: (Part II) The second concern is that pushing the minimum wage higher will increase the cost of goods and services, will discourage the hiring of unskilled, uneducated workers, and will push the high level of wages down.  It is bad for the economy and bad for families.  It is a pipe dream which politicians and do-gooders push to win over support of people who do not understand the harm to the overall economy it will do.   Arizona has worked hard to recover from the recession; passing Prop 206 will cause more people to lose their jobs and make the state less competitive. Even worse than the increase in minimum wage rates is mandatory sick time pay which the proposition will require every employer to pay. Quoting from the proposition: “Proposition 206 would also require employers to provide employees with "earned paid sick time" for an employee's medical care or mental or physical illness, injury or condition, an employee's need to care for a family member with a mental or physical illness, injury or condition or a family member who needs medical care, a public health emergency or an absence due to abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, domestic violence, sexual violence or stalking.” Business leaders in the state warn voters that increasing the minimum wage will have a negative impact on prices and jobs. Glenn Hamer of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry said in a recent statement that the minimum-wage increase is likely to force employers to “lay off employees, raise prices, institute hiring freezes, invest in automation that will make employees unnecessary, or even close up shop.” The answer is for government to get out of the market, to reduce regulations and to help encourage that capital investment money be freed up.  A real boost to our economy would be a reduction in inflation so that the cost of living goes down.
