Republican Briefs

Editor Frosty Taylor      Web Master John Strasser

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to select Ronna Romney McDaniel as the next chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, according to multiple reports.  McDaniel, the niece of 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, currently serves as chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party. Her selection to run the RNC could ... Read the full story

Anita Christy: Stop the National Popular Vote Compact in Arizona"Democracy" has a nice ring to it: One Person, One Vote.  However, that's exactly what the Founders did not want: Majority (aka Mob) Rule.  Our presidents are chosen through a combination of a popular vote and the Electoral College that represents the states.  Each state’s entitled allotment of electors equals the number of members in its Congressional delegation: one for each member in the House of Representatives plus two for Senators.  This keeps a handful of the most populous states from dominating all the other states.  For example, Donald Trump won the popular vote in Arizona.  Thus, the Republican party's 11 Electors will vote for president.  Had Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, Arizona's 11 Democrat Electors would be voting for president. (In contrast, California has 55 Electors.) Unfortunately, there is a movement across America—and Arizona!--that is gaining traction called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.  It would distort the procedures of the Electoral College.  It would usher in the very "democracy" that the Founders did not want.  It is unconstitutional.  Jim O'Connor, who is running for chairman of the AZGOP, along with Precinct Committeemen Michael Loverine and Bob Hathorn from LD 23, are fighting to defend our Republic and have put together a power point presentation titled The Argument Against the National Popular Vote Compact.  Find out what you can do to STOP the National Popular Vote Compact in Arizona.

Congrats to April Riggins on her new position as the Executive Assistant to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas. Riggins, Executive Director of the Maricopa County Republican Committee (MCRC), has been with Rep Brenda Barton for several years.

Vera Anderson, Chairman of the Daisy Mountain Tea Party: “What a great year we have had! But, now I need your prayers. You see while we were having so much fun getting Mr Trump and other's elected it was discovered that I have breast cancer. This morning at 5am I will be having surgery. I am trusting God will be with me and watch over and protect me. Your prayers will be appreciated.” Good luck with the surgery, our prayers are with you. - ft

Condolences To The Family Of Peggy Hurd, former Grande Valley Republican Women President, who passed away Dec 9. “Peggy touched so many lives with her involvement not only with Grande Valley Republican Women but with all of the other clubs and groups she was part of. She worked tireless to make GVRW  successful  She will be dearly missed,” according to the GVRW Executive Board - Irene Littleton – President, Sandra Knapp - Treasurer, Glenda Bird - Membership, Barbara Vaade - Secretary. She was also a long-time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Arrangement details tba.

Long-time activist George Weisz : “Yesterday mom was laid to rest next to my dad in Skokie, Illinois, where we grew up. And yesterday was the first snow of the season for Skokie, the type of snow she loved, huge soft flakes gently coming down in a magical peaceful quietness. We and MacCabee already miss you so much. Thx for the warm thoughts we received from so many; TRULY appreciated by my family.” Editor’s Note: Weisz was a lead investigator on the Don Bolles murder case years ago for then Attorney General Bob Corbin. – ft

Former LD13 Chairman Wally Campbell has announced there will be no meeting in December. Newly elected LD 13 Chairman Ben Boon will announce the January 2017 meeting.

Christopher P P Brant, Two-term past president of the Fountain Hills Republican Club: State of Affairs LD 23 Style - The indignation of Credential Chair Lynne Breyer of LD 23 is a farce and does not address the problems of the operating of LD 23 business. (See Breyer letter 2016_12_11_archive ) At the state level, most Republicans who honor our democracy, are in support of our Secretary of State Michele Reagan’s action against ballot harvesting. Please tell me what the difference is between ballot harvesting and proxy harvesting? Proxy harvesting is what a small group of individuals have been doing to hold onto power over the last six years in LD 23. In the process, they have driven away many hardworking, long term members of LD 23 by bringing to the statutory meetings a slate of many “unknowns”. The “unknowns” are individuals who have been signed up as non-participating PCs, who never attend district meetings, but whose proxies end up making up well over a quarter of the votes cast. I know that it might be too late for our past Chairman, Jim O’Connor (who is now running for Arizona State Chairman) to comment on these shenanigans. Former Chairman O’Connor has stated that he is running to represent all state Republicans. However, a 1983 naturalized citizen, who became a PC two years later, who has been active for 27 of those 31 years will join many other honorable LD 23 PCs that will not be able to attend the Republican State Meeting in January because an “unknown” paper proxy PC will be taking his seat. Interesting fact: Like many other LD 23 PCs, judged not worthy to attend the 2017 Republican State Meeting. PS: Only one of the new LD 23 Board Members has attended a single meeting of FHRC in the past few years. At that fundraiser, a 2016 Post-Primary Picnic, that member even refused to donate the minimum donation in support of the club function. Not a good omen for the future of unity! Editor’s Note: Brant is two-term past President Fountain Hills Republican Club (1990s), Immediate Past 1st VP Fountain Hills Republican Club (FHRC), Active Board Member of the “2015 Best Republican Club” FHRC.

LD 23 PC Boe James: State Committeemen Thank you Ron Smith for resigning so that Dr CT Wright can become a State Committeeman. I feel that Ron (unlike some of the others) is one of those that did deserve to be a State Committeeman.  For a long time he has been an active member of the Republican Party.  He has done more than his fair share, making up for some who have done nothing.  How very honorable of him, but that is somewhat to be expected based on his being a US Marine and knowing US Marine Corps honor, integrity and ethics.   I hope he does not get harassment from those who made up the LD 23 slate.  He is a fellow former member of the Navy-Marine Corps team.  Semper-Fi.

LD22 PC Chris Herring- "As a candidate for the Chairmanship of the Maricopa County Republican Party I am thrilled that Aaron Flannery is running for 1st Vice Chair. Getting to know Aaron over the last year he has become a friend and I couldn't ask for a better person to work along side. It is great to now be running as a team for the leadership of the county party."

Activist Lynne Breyer: I read with interest the letter from AZGOP Chairman Graham when it arrived in my inbox and again in Briefs (See 2016_12_10_archive.) I'm struck by the audacity of it. I, too, have received numerous accounts of misdeeds in LD meetings, primarily LD15, 28, 24 & 13. There was remarkable similarity in the complaints. So let's take LD15 as an example. That is Robert Graham's LD. In that LD, PCs unknown to any of the long time PCs in that district came in, most for the very first time, bearing hands full of proxies. These PCs promptly elected a Board and state committeemen from among the never seen PCs. The PCs who have been the backbone of the district were swept aside. Graham and people outside that district were said to be complicit in orchestrating that take over. Is Graham looking into the ethics of that? It's common for some to not receive a Call letter. Whether sent via USP mail or email, which is not prohibited by statute or state by-laws, there is no guarantee of receipt. Districts have a duty to “mail” the Call, no duty to verify receipt. What struck me most by this letter is the lecture to all PCs from a Chairman who has consistently violated state by-laws, has refused to allow qualified Resolutions be heard from the floor, who used an electronic voting system at the Convention that was proven to be defective and offered no remedy and did little to help Trump win Arizona by a mere 4.11%. Further, he even sat quietly while his Parliamentarian lied by omission from the podium to keep Graham from being censured. So, Chairman, you are right to call for adherence to statute and by-laws in important meetings. Perhaps you could start with yourself by following your own advice?

Wes Harris Announces For MCRC Treasurer: I recently participated in an Audit of the MCRC financials and observed what I believe are some major short falls. My recommendations were offered and approved at the Last EGC meeting. The retirement of our current treasure makes it imperative that these recommendations be implemented as soon as possible so I decided to run for the now vacant office. Please note that my recommendations in no way cast dispersions on our departing Treasure as he has done a Yeoman’s Job. It is just that I feel that the office needs a new ‘set of eyes’ and I believe I am more than qualified for this task.

I graduated from Northern Illinois University with a BS in Accounting and from Amos Tuck Graduate School at Dartmouth College. During my Corporate Career I became the Chief Financial Officer of Armour and Company and Armour Dial (now Hinkel), both substantially large international corporations. Upon leaving the corporate world I started my own company in the Firearms industry which I operate to this day.

I am a life-long Republican and citizen advocate lobbying the City of Phoenix on domestic issues for some 35 years. I became a P.C. in the then L.D. 6 and was nominated twice as an outstanding P.C. Upon redistricting, I became an active member of L.D.20 serving various capacities, most recently as 2nd Vice Chair. Last year I was elected by this body as one of your Members At Large. While a P.C. in L.D. 6 I started the first Tea Party in Phoenix…The Original North Phoenix Tea Party…and ran it for four years. I humbly ask for your vote for MCRC Treasurer. Contact: 602-432-2871 (c) 602-942-9281 (h)

Activist Dianne Woods: Don’t assume others will show up (at the Dec 14 meeting) and you don’t have to.  This was not advertised.  Most parents and grandparents didn’t even know this was happening.  This will probably be the last time to let our voices be heard on what is happening in our schools. Such a lousy time of the year to do this.  This will affect our teachers, children and grandchildren. Did you get a good chance to put input in this or get notification of this happening from your child’s school or did your grandchildren’s parents get notified? Contact:

Arizona Citizens Defense League (AzCDL) Pres. Dave Kopp: The holiday season is here and there is no better time than now to show your support for the Arizona Citizens Defense League. As individuals, we are passionate about our rights; and as the holidays draw closer, we are reminded that when we come together as a community, we are better able to protect those rights. Without our loyal members and supporters, our organization and the rights we fight for would cease to exist. The holidays are meant to bring people together and to recognize what we are grateful for. Having rights and being able to protect them is something that I –and many of you – can appreciate not only now at the end of the year, but year-round as well. During this time of year especially, people are willing to spend a large amount of money on food, drinks, gifts, etc. If you donate just $1 a day to help us defend our fundamental rights, you will make a significant impact. Imagine if everyone on this email list set aside just $30 of their holiday spending for the month of December and donated to AzCDL. We could ensure our freedoms and the freedom of generations to come. I would personally like to thank you for your support. Your donations and commitment to AzCDL reassures me that we will be able to protect ourselves against any threat that comes our way. If you would like to make a one-time donation instead, please click here.
