1-12-16 Republican Briefs

Dan Grimm - Co-Chair MCRC Jan 16 Mandatory Meeting Planning Committee:  There was some confusion due to one slide from the training session this past weekend.

The MCRC Bylaws allow for passing off credentials from one person to the next at the meeting.

In previous years, this was erroneously limited to those within the same LD or even the same precinct.  However, the bylaws do NOT place such limits.  The credentials may be passed on to any member of the body.  This process is referred to in the bylaws as a  "Verbal" proxy.

We will make this clear at the Credentials tables Saturday! Per the MCRC Bylaws, Article IV, Section 2, Sub-Section C2 (Page 10)

2. After registration at meeting, votes may be cast by registrant or may be passed on by verbal proxy to other voting members of the body using a form pre-printed on their voting credentials that they receive when registering at Credentials and Tally. Proxies thus created at the meeting may not be re-proxied to a third party.

Therefore, once credentialed, any Credentialed attendee may pass off their credentials to ANY OTHER Credentialed attendee at the meeting, one time.

Please accept my apologies for the erroneous explanation at our training on Saturday!    480-570-8570

These monitors play an extremely important role in helping protect the integrity of those elections.  There will be two monitors at each machine – checking credentials and two additional monitors watching the ballots being inserted into the voting machines.  Contact Johnson at 602-999-4284 (cell) or

Dan Grimm - Co-Chair MCRC Planning Committee : Thanks for all you do to communicate with our PCs, and I personally appreciate your willingness to share our MCRC information (mistakes and all!)

MCRC Member At Large Candidate Sophia Johnson:  Johnson is the 1st Vice Chairman for Legislative District 19.  In 2014, she ran for State House in a Democratic district. Her past and current elected offices include State Committeeman in Legislative Districts 12, 20, 26, and 19.  In 2010, she was elected LD20 Secretary and served her constituents as a delegate at the Arizona State Convention in 2012.

She has volunteered as the Community Relations Director for American Foundation for Cardiomyopathy for the past six years. She holds Bachelor of Sciences degrees in Business Administration and Theology from Wayland Baptist University.  She has a certificate in Public Policy and Management from the University of Arizona through the Southwest Local Leadership Program. Johnson is a graduate of Westmarcs Leadership West and Dodie Londen Excellence in Public Service Series.  She graduated from Leadership Institutes Campaign Management School and Candidate School in Virginia.

Johnson says she is devoted to serving every member of the Republican Party by advancing the principles of less intrusive government, lower taxes and a strong national defense. In 2005, she received Recognition of Distinguished Service to advance the principles of the Republican Party from the RNC.

MCRC Member At Large Candidate Lynn Weaver:  I’ve attended just about every MCRC Executive Guidance Committee (EGC) meeting for the past 10 years and am the only Member-at Large (MAL) candidate to do so.  I know and understand the workings of the EGC.   I previously served as MAL and, with your vote, would be honored to do so again.  I am currently an LD 28 PC, was 1st Vice Chairman of the former LD 7, and volunteered on numerous Republican candidate campaigns.  As Chairman of Prop 13 Arizona, a citizens’ initiative to limit property taxes, I’m working to uphold the Republican platform principles of lower taxes, limited government, and more freedom.  I worked in the airline and fashion industries and earned an MBA in Economics and Econometric Forecasting.  My goal as MAL is to register more Republicans and, even more importantly, get more registered Republicans voting!  With a good business plan and blueprint for implementation, we can turn out our vote; get more of our Republican candidates elected and by wider margins, showing the strength of our party and platform.  We can get the job done – and have fun doing it!  Think of all the terrific friends you’ve made through your Republican volunteer work! I would appreciate your vote on January 16th.

Reps. Matt Salmon and DanKildee invited Amir Hekmati’s sister and brother-in-law to the President’s Jan 12 State of the Union Address. “Today marks the 1,596th day of Amir Hekmati’s unjust imprisonment in Iran on charges fabricated out of whole cloth. The House of Representatives has been adamant that we must secure his release.  To draw attention to Amir’s plight, his sister Sarah Hekmati (guest of Rep. Dan Kildee) and her husband Dr. Ramy Kurdi (guest of Rep. Matt Salmon) will be, by agreement of the whole house, seated together tonight at the President’s State of the Union address to Congress. It is our hope that bringing renewed national attention to Amir’s imprisonment will not only keep him in the nation’s prayers, but renew our diplomatic efforts to secure his release.”

Congressman  Martha McSally’s guest at the State of the Union will be Tucson high school senior Guadalupe “Lupita” Romero. Lupita has been an active member of the Holmes Tuttle Clubhouse for seven years. Romero is 17-years old and a senior at Rincon High School. Dem CD candidate Ann Kirkpatrick is having a heyday developing an anniversay card chiding Sen John McCain for the “past 33 years becoming the very best Washington insider he could be,” as she attempts to make sure he doesn’t have a 34th anniversary in the US senate slot.  Her reminders:

1.    “McCain lined his coffers with millions of dollars from special interests. His top three lifetime “contributors” are from Wall Street.

2.    “McCain has an absentee rate nearly six times higher than the average senator. He’s missed hundreds of votes, including skipping a defense authorization vote for “Saturday Night Live” rehearsals. That’s comedy we don’t find funny.

3.    “Missing votes? No problem. Missing a Sunday talk show appearance? NEVER! McCain appeared on talk shows 88 times in the past few years.

4.    “McCain fought against closing the Terror Gap to stop suspected terrorists from buying guns.

5.    “McCain said that some U.S jobs “shouldn’t be protected.”

6.    “McCain backed a no-strings-attached bailout for some of the biggest banks on the planet.

GOP Sen Candidate Kelli Ward: This evening, President Obama delivered his final State of the Union address, and he took this last opportunity to double-down on the same delusional policies that have defined his administration: unconstitutional executive actions on gun control, amnesty for illegal immigrants, and the crushing burden of ObamaCare.  For eight years, the president has thrust his radical liberal agenda on the nation --- and the Establishment in Congress has done little to stop him. But this November, we have the chance to start anew. I won’t sugarcoat it: it’ll be a tough fight. The DC Establishment has deep pockets, and they’ll spend whatever it takes to keep us from bringing real, conservative change to Washington. But if we work together and stand up for what we believe in --- standing strong for the Second Amendment, securing our border, and passing healthcare reform that empowers patients --- we can defeat the Establishment in November. We can change Washington if we work together and stand up to the Establishment’s deep pockets and fight for our conservative values?

Most astute observers have been predicting that one of the major legislative topics of 2016 will be education in general and parental rights in particular. Those predictions appear to be coming to fruition at both the state and national levels.

At the state level we will be tracking two bills, HB2044 by Rep. Finchem and HB2056 by Rep. Ackerley. Please keep a sharp look out for these bills because we will be asking you to contact elected officials at the proper time.

At the national level, two senators, Isakson (R-GA) and Alexander (R-TN), are working on this subject. We at the AZRRT limit our activity to the state level, but you should be aware of what these two senators are doing on our behalf. To that end, please make sure you watch the video included at the end of the article referred to in our latest Facebook posting. Senator John McCain on voting to advance the “Audit the Fed” bill that would subject the Federal Reserve to a comprehensive audit and enhanced congressional oversight: “Today I voted in support of a bill to audit the Federal Reserve so that the American people have greater transparency and accountability into how the Fed creates monetary policy. This bill would mandate much-needed congressional oversight of the Federal Reserve by removing legal barriers that have prevented the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office from fully auditing the Fed. It would also help prevent these central bankers, whose deliberations are kept completely secret from the public, from creating economic booms and busts. Unfortunately, Democrats in Congress have acted to maintain the status quo and keep the Fed’s policy decisions about the trillions of American tax dollars it controls secret by preventing this bill from moving forward. I will continue working with my colleagues to move this commonsense proposal forward and protect the American people who are directly impacted by the Fed’s policies and decisions.”

Senator John McCain on President Obama’s State of the Union address:  “Tonight President Obama decided to start the ‘lame duck’ portion of his presidency early and use his State of the Union address to shape his legacy instead of seriously addressing the challenges we face at home and abroad.

“Ten American sailors have been taken into custody in Iran. But President Obama completely omitted this latest example of Iran’s provocative behavior so as not to interfere with his delusional talking points about his dangerous nuclear deal with Iran.

“As we’ve seen in Paris and San Bernardino, ISIL’s threat to our homeland is real, direct, and growing. But President Obama squandered yet another opportunity to articulate a coherent strategy to achieve ISIL’s lasting defeat.

“The murderous Assad regime is still barrel-bombing the Syrian people and fanning the flames of extremism and sectarianism that gave rise to ISIL.  Nearly 10,000 Americans are still in harms’ way in Afghanistan. Russia still occupies Crimea and is destabilizing Ukraine. North Korea just conducted its third nuclear test under this Administration. Yet these topics barely earned a mention in tonight’s address, if at all.

“Our nation does not need lofty words. It needs bold action. Our nation does not need abstract calls to hope. It needs a concrete strategy to confront the challenges of a more dangerous world. Unfortunately, it appears these tasks will be left to the next president.”

Superintendent of Public Education Diane Douglas: The founders of the state created the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction as one of the elected members of the Executive branch of government to expressly guarantee that one official has no other responsibility than to answer to the people for the education of their children.

Laurie Roberts (AZ Republic columnist) calls the position a ‘glorified department head’ with all the decision making done by an appointed board that by statute meets four times per year. The same could be said of the State Mine Inspector, Secretary of State, the State Treasurer, and State Attorney General. Why not just have three offices on the ballot? Governor, Senator and Representative? Under such a system, the people would be ill served indeed.

The State Treasurer was able to weigh in freely on the discussion of the state land trust, resulting in a modification of the proposal. The Attorney General was able to weigh in on the Corporation Commission conflict of interest issue, while the Secretary of State was able to argue her position on clean elections.

As Superintendent of Public Instruction, I promised the voters that I would get rid of Common Core. Despite the refusal of staff and board members, I was successful on a 6-2 vote to do just that. It would never have happened if I was not an elected official and the people of the state would not have been given what they were promised.

Superintendent of Public Education Diane Douglas: Our Arizona Executive branch is currently composed of all Republicans who on most issues agree completely, such as limited government, lower taxation, more personal freedom and reduction of regulations. However, when we disagree, having equal footing as elected officials is the only way better decisions are made through debate. It is the only way the public would even hear of such disagreements. No department head would ever publicly disagree on a policy issue.

“The real problem Roberts appears to have is not with the office, but with the voters. Despite her best efforts to oppose me in the primary and general elections, to join in saying I’m unfit for office in several vacuous articles and to support the recall efforts, she has failed. Having failed in those efforts, she suggests eliminating the office altogether. I certainly trust the voters in Arizona to select their leaders and their issues more than I do one solitary columnist who opposes the majority of voters on every major issue.

“Any pilot will tell you that in war time you only take flak when you are over the target. If I was irrelevant and not making the important changes that the voters asked me to make, no one would care. It is only as an elected official that the Superintendent has the power to make positive changes for our children’s education, and that is what I’m doing each and every day.

“Later this week I will provide a list of accomplishments of the Arizona Department of Education over the last year. I doubt Roberts will read it, much less agree that the accomplishments are positive changes. Nor do I believe she will let the voters know that their voice is being heard, is strong and is being acted upon.

“We need more democracy, not armchair columnists out of touch with the wishes of voters. I’ll be proud to answer to the people of Arizona for my actions.”
