LD23 Chairman Jim O’Connor: Questions I plan to raise at the 10 am Monday morning’s House Elections Committee -- which once answered should lead to a withdrawal of HB 2456.

1. Has a request been made to the AG’s office for an opinion on the constitutionality of this matter?

2. Was there a thorough discussion as to the effect of entering this compact, most especially that (if successful i.e. hitting the 270 electoral votes) it would negate the intended purpose of the Electoral College i.e. protecting the smaller states like our own? And if so, please explain how that would be accomplished in a pure democracy?

3. Was consideration given to the U. S. Supreme Courts decision which determined that the domestic compact clause applies only to a narrow class of state agreements; including those establishing binding obligations for multistate administrative agencies relating to regional or local issues only?

4. Was there a discussion of possible ramifications of AZ becoming the first red state to join this movement by the republican caucus?

5. Please site the authority which gives this body the power to contribute this state’ electoral votes to such a compact?

6. How does AZ’s entry into this compact protect the distinct and unique interests of the citizens of AZ?

7. How fully were the backgrounds of the major sponsors and funding sources of the NPV Movement disclosed and discussed? Were questions raised when you learned of them?

8. Was examination of the changes in state election laws in CA & NY made and how they will affect AZ as to this proposed compact?

9. Was anyone made aware that the RNC voted 167 to 1 against the NPV idea only four years ago?

10. Has a review and discussion of all available opposing points of view on this NPV matter by nationally prominent think tanks like Heritage, CATO Institute, John Birch Society, League of Women Voters, etc?

LD24 PC Brent Brooks Announces Candidacy for the Second Vice Chair of the Maricopa County Republican Committee. I am very passionate about this community and state and am grateful for the opportunity to have worked closely with several campaigns and Republican organizations throughout the county. This year I helped launch a successful group of Young Republicans in Maricopa County and I am currently the treasurer and digital director of the group. The organization continues to grow – we’ve hosted a myriad of events over the last year and just last Friday we hosted an event with Secretary of State Michele Reagan.
I helped the Maricopa County Republican Committee with its digital media outreach. Working with Chairman Tyler Bowyer, we have significantly expanded this organization’s social media efforts and the work is paying off. Communicating in this medium is important and it is work I will continue to champion as 2nd vice chair.
This organization, this party and this state needs to continue to grow and thrive. We cannot allow democrats to take hold of this state and if we allow Hilary Clinton, or God forbid Bernie Sanders, to become president I fear for my generation’s future. It is proven that this country and the state of Arizona fare better economically under Republican leadership. If we stick to our core values and keep educating voters there will be more opportunity for everyone in Arizona.
I am excited and humbled to be considered for this role and it will be my mission as Second Vice Chair to grow this organization and help it thrive. My focus will be recruiting Precinct Committeemen and registering voters, not only in the traditional sense, but online and through social media as well. We need to win in November and I am 100 percent committed to making that happen. -

The Ahwatukee Tea Party will meet will meet at 6:30 pm., Thurs., Feb 18 at Fire Station #43, 4110 Chandler Blvd., Phx, 85048 to hear Dr. Thomas Patterson, Chairman of Compact for America. Patterson, a retired physician, is a former state senator and former chairman of the Goldwater Institute. Contact:

Secretary of State Michele Reagan has proposed making this the last time the state runs the Presidential Preference Election (PPE) which costs the state nearly $10 million and bars one-third of voters from participating. Unlike any other election in Arizona, the PPE precludes so-called “independent” voters from participating.  Instead, only registered members of the state’s recognized political parties participating in the election may cast a ballot.

“Since day one, our mission has been to do everything we can to improve voter participation,” said Reagan.  “We’ve asked ourselves if it really makes any sense for Arizona to spend nearly $10 million on an election where the largest block of voters cannot participate.  We’re proposing the legislature repeal the PPE and return to the days where the parties ran their own presidential primaries. By returning control of national convention delegate section to the parties we are empowering them to decide for themselves the best way forward.  Parties might conduct an internet election, a mail ballot open to all Arizonans or adopt an Iowa-style caucus.  The PPE is about parties doing party business and they should do what they think is best for their members.”

In addition to the elimination of the election itself, the bill (HB2567) requests the legislature to supplement last year’s appropriation with $6 million dollars to cover the remaining state and local costs expenses related to the 2016 PPE.  The registration deadline for the Presidential Preference Election is February 22, with early voting to begin on February 24.  For more registration information visit:

Circulating The Net: " In Houston, Texas is no stranger to funny yet controversial, tactical signage. For the past year, the gun range based in Houston has displayed some hilarious yet controversial messages posted to their marquee outside the store. But it's their latest signs that are now turning heads.

I like my guns like Obama likes his voters – undocumented.

We like our guns locked up and safe – like Obama’s birth records.

Harry Reid says the border is secure. Did they legalize marijuana in Washington?

Criminals follow gun laws like politicians follow their oath of office.

Guns are cheap compared to ObamaCare and have better coverage.

Secretary Of State Michele Reagan has appointed historian Dr. Jack L. August, Jr. to lead philanthropy and institutional advancement for the Arizona Capitol Museum. An expert on water resources in Arizona, August serves as an expert witness and consultant for cities, utilities and private companies in relations to water rights and water delivery systems throughout the state. GOP Probe Says Treasury Misled Public On Debt Limit: The Obama administration considered prioritizing debt payments if the nation hit its borrowing cap, despite public assurances from the Treasury Department that such a plan would be unworkable, according to a congressional probe. The Republican leadership of the House Financial Services Committee charged Monday that Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and other department officials misled the public when it came to the risks of the debt ceiling. Neil Macdonald, President SaddleBrooke Republican Club: Frosty - Thanks for all you do supporting all of us Republicans.

Prior To This Evening’s Lincoln Women’s Republican Club Senatorial Candidates Forum, Briefs posted the club event including the names of candidates John McCain, Kelli Ward, Alex Mulesky and Clair Van Steenwyk, as submitted. It was brought to our attention this morning that McCain and Ward would not be attending – leaving only Mulesky and Van Steenwyk to participate. Cindy McCain was reportedly slated to appear in McCain’s place, however, as one of the candidate’s spokesman remarked, “There is nothing to debate with John McCain’s wife, she is not the candidate.”

Julie Lind, Lincoln Republican Women’s Club Chairman responds to inquiry: “…. All 5 candidates for Arizona US Senate were invited to attend. Senator John McCain and Kelli Ward sent regrets that they are unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts. Candidates Alex Meluskey and Clair Van Steenwyk have RSVPd to attend and David Pizer did not respond to our email invitation. Cindy McCain will join us for our social time and she will be given a few minutes to speak on behalf of the McCain campaign and Kelli Ward's representatives will be given the same. We do not have the names of who will attend for the Ward Campaign.”

US Senate Candidate Dr. Kelli Ward has declined an invitation to participate in the Tea Party of Scottsdale’s Feb 18 candidate forum, according to a memo TPS received. Speaking in behalf of Ward, Carolyn Leff, Ward scheduler, wrote: “Thank you so much for the invite. However, at this time the Ward Campaign will not be participating in any forums and or debates. When we do debate in the Spring; it will only be if Senator McCain is present. If you would like to have Senator Ward come and speak at a meeting with just her, we will be happy to schedule you a date and time. Please let me know if that works. Thanks again for reaching out to our campaign. Thank You, Carolyn Leff.
